I called the local Anchorage office, after waiting 15 minutes, somone picked up the line (I could hear voices in the background), and set the receiver back down effectively cutting me off. I called again, but this time after 15 minutes, it began to ring 10-12 times, then a automated voice told me "call later", and shut the line. And socialists nationwide are complaining about DOGE? How about this ridiculously rude SSA office. I live out on the coast, I am going to have to pay Alaska Airlines $600.00 to fly in to Anchorage, then $250 for a B&B, another $50 in cab fees, to go here, maybe be seen, then I may be able to get something done, maybe not. I drove over to the social security office and parked. Walk in and the security guards stop me and let me know that I cannot enter without a mask. The funny thing is they don't provide masks. There is no mask mandate so of course I don't have a mask on me. Wasted about an hour today just to get turned down because I don't have a mask and don't provide one. I don't think the phone number listed for Anchorage is accurate (866-772-3081. I have called several times, and each time a woman's voice comes on, and asks, "who is this?" Holy moly this place has long waits. I thought the DMV was bad, but this place takes the cake. It's not the fault of the service, and there are a lot of service people manning the windows, it's just that there are a lot of people needing social security cards, checks, benefits, etc... Every time I've come in I've had great service which is amazing because I get cranky when someone cranks at me and I bet these people get cranked at a lot. Bring a book or a well charged phone, you're going to need it. Trust me on this. One thing to note is that you have to go through security and place belongings in a bin. I was wearing cowboy boots and the guy was like take off your boots and place them in the bin or you'll have to get scanned. I looked at the wet floor and was like no, I'll get scanned. Well the security guard at the entrance of the building was a bit of a douche (to everyone), but I had a pretty good experience at the actual SS part of things. I got there around 10:45am on a Friday and I only had to wait maybe 20 minutes before being called to the window, where it only took maybe 5 minutes to change my name in their records. I'd filled out the form a few days beforehand, but still, the whole thing went a LOT quicker than I'd heard it would. read more

If you're going to the location or trying to call it is a terrible experience. They staff are so overwhelmed with work that their phones are forwarded to the National number, requiring at least an hour wait. However, I have assisted with several social security disability telephone appointments with their staff and they are typically very helpful and kind. When you apply for social security benefits on the phone, your first call will be with someone in another state, but the follow up call is from someone in the local office and they are usually kind and understand the Alaska only things, like PFDs and Native Corporation Dividends. read more

I have been to many Social security offices and this one is the worst. I have visited social security offices in lower 48 and you get in and get out. Not here, plan on spending the whole day and getting nowhere. If you need something done like file for social security plan on it taking months, sometimes years. They are so backed up and slow that nothing gets done.They will act like they did not get information from you because they lose it by the time they get around to you. I faxed things over 7 different times. They sent out letters saying I failed to send them stuff and refused my claim. Then would call me and say everything is fine. Then the next month same thing. Then all the sudden I got a check in the mail 9 months later. By then I had moved on and figured I was not getting nothing. They are just that backed up. read more

I have had the worst experience with the employees of social security due to the discrimination and lack of knowledge for people who come into the office, I have been taken on the run around about proper documentation for my disability benefits my doctor has filed documents to social security which are conveniently lost to give the employees time to improperly abuse my case, I have not received my benefits which I depend on and now cannot get answers in why, maybe the employees that have been caught falsifying documents before should be federally audited to see what the problem is! read more
