How about this ridiculously rude SSA office. I live out on the coast, I am going to have to pay Alaska Airlines $600.00 to fly in to Anchorage, then $250 for a B&B, another $50 in cab fees, to go here, maybe be seen, then I may be able to get something done, maybe not. The race, as I've learned, is a memorial to the original run of dogs back in 1925. They were bringing a shipment of diptheria medication from Anchorage to Nome. The big brass dog looks pretty tough! There's such a look of concentration in his eyes as he's running for the finish line.

I know that story by heart so imagine my surprise to be riding my rental bike along 4th Ave. last week and coming upon The Balto Memorial in downtown Anchorage! This statue of the legendary lead dog Balto also marks the "official" starting point of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race every March. Balto was a very brave dog and a big hero who lived from 1919 - March 14, 1933. He was a Siberian Husky sled dog who led his team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, in which diphtheria antitoxin was transported from Anchorage, Alaska, to Nenana, Alaska, by train and then to Nome by dog sled to combat an outbreak of the disease. Balto's heroics saved the lives of many sick people, many of them children. The "Serum Run" is now commemorated by the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.. The Memorial is very nice and shows a very sturdy-looking Balto in full stride. Someone downtown told me it is a mad house there every March when they start the Iditarod race right there on the main drag. I guess the race has sold out & become a media stunt now but the statue of Balto is still 5 YELP STARS!

But the two ladies at open windows happened to know the people they were helping. Next thing I know I hear them talking about being a nanny and exchanging Facebook and cell phone information. I will say, once the personal talking and catching up was done, it was my turn and the lady was very polite and helped me get my paperwork submitted.

I tried to call street light maintenance to report a light that's been out for the past four months…read moreand got the RUDEST woman! It's a Chugach light but the MOA website says if you can't reach them or don't know whose light it is report it to them and they can relay it. The woman kept giving me a not my light not my problem attitude before telling me "if you would be quiet for five seconds and listen long enough to get some sense in your head-" Apparently the MOA couldn't be bothered to plow my roads (Sand Lake/Jewel Lake area) even once last winter and a neighbor had to do it, not they can't even be bothered to do anything about street lights.

Executive Summary: If you are moving to the Anchorage, the city will treat your unloading of personal goods in the exact same manner as if you were building a condo or opening a water main. Seriously, you need a right-of-way permit...you need to fill it out, and then you need to attach a map telling them where your moving trailer will rest. Oh, and you have to PAY to unload your goods as well. How much? $0.70/per square foot/per day. Since I only needed a day to unload it would cost me about $5. OK, not too bad right? Only problem is that there is a MINIMUM fee of $130. This kind of fee makes the banksters at the credit card companies look...well...kind by comparison. So I filled out all my permit paper work and was waiting to pickup my permit. Then I get a call from a permit inspector saying he "happened to be in the neighborhood" and that my permit was not posted on my moving container. He was correct, it wasn't. I had taken my lunch break to help the truck driver drop off the container and wasn't going to be able to pickup the permit till after I got off of work. The container had been there only a couple hours. Later that day I waited in 3 different lines for the right to pay $130 for my piece of paper allowing me to move into the city. I always thought of Alaska more as a "don't tread on me" type of state. But, if you want to move to Anchorage, expect lots of treading.

The garage provides more than 840 parking spaces that will consolidate State employee vehicles into one structure. Forty spaces will be available for visitors on State business. The street-front retail spaces are tucked under covered walkways that form a brightly lit colonnade. The colonnade promotes and sustains pedestrian activity, particularly in winter. Heated sidewalks ring three sides of the building for added winter safety. The retail along F Street forms a strong pedestrian link between the Civic and Convention Centers, Performing Arts Center (PAC), and the Egan Center. Retail along E Street and 7th Avenue draw pedestrian circulation to the Convention Center from E St. Entries to retail are from the colonnade. New sidewalks will be wider than the existing sidewalks and will receive pattern and texture. Bike racks, seating units, and kiosks are included as site amenities. The exterior façade has a varied composition, beginning with vehicle barrier cables sleeved through the columns, which are in turn enveloped by a skin consisting of two types of metal louver panels, along with voids, that create dynamic and ascending diagonal patterns. The 7th Avenue façade will feature a site for public artwork. The delicate glass enclosed stair tower and elevator lobby anchors the plaza at 7th Avenue and F Street, and is balanced by a similar glazing system that encloses the stair tower at the alley and E Street. The overall composition of vertical and horizontal skin elements serves to break up the scale of the facility and create a layered effect on the facade. The garage employs a "camelback" circulation pattern for vehicles to facilitate timely exiting movements at peak departure events. The park-on ramping occurs on three sides of the structure, with a flat horizontal tier at the 7th Avenue elevation. The space is well maintained, ease of access with elevators and escalators between the multiple floors, clean and orderly. They work to ensure all of the AV Equipment is up to date and works well for events. For the functions with meals, they've all done quite well with serving, keeping stations full and orderly. They're quick to remove empty plates and glasses as well. The food has been decent, I wouldn't say absolutely amazing, but definitely edible.
