A nice little coffee shop with tons of signs outside to bring you in. The barista was really sweet and patient. Giving my husband and I plenty of time to look at the menu and order. Their pastry case was stocked and looked delicious. It is not a huge coffee shop but they do have seating and a bar to sit at as well. I ordered a matcha latte with a lemon poppy seed scone. It came out quick and we had a nice area to sit and enjoy. My only complaint was the bathroom was in a very crammed area and women's bathroom was out of order so I had to use men's bathroom which was a bit dirty. Decided to check this place out for coffee on a Saturday morning with a group of 6. We were immediately greeted warmly and shown menus plus the overflowing baked goods display. Cue instant drools and "oooo!"s all around! We placed orders for drinks, sandwiches and pastries, which they gladly warmed up for us, and grabbed a table to get out of the way. Everything came out quickly (as quick as you can when you're pulling espresso for 6 different drinks!) and we tucked in. The good: Biggest rave was the caramel frappe (not too sweet with a great balance of espresso) and iced lattes. The taste was bold without being bitter or burnt, something we all appreciated. The cinnamon rolls were fresh, soft and gooey with just the right amount of icing, not a crumb left behind. As we ordered more caramel frappes to go (don't judge), we learned how much they work with the community. Love supporting local businesses, especially those that give back to their community. My mom and I stopped here because we read they had lavender flavored syrup for lattes. We were not disappointed! The employee working was very friendly and super helpful. We sat down and waited for our lattes to be made. We fully expected to go up to the counter to get them, when the employer brought them over to us. Cute little coffee shop and I was lucky enough to stay within walking distance at an Airbnb. I got a mocha and danish (based on the friendly staff's recommendations). Both were pretty good. They have different baked goods daily. The inside of Social Grounds is small but charming. I popped in on a Saturday and Sunday and it took the poor barista winging it solo a while to make everyone's orders, but the service was still really good. I absolutely love this place! It's right around the corner from my work, Shands Hospital. Their coffee is always fresh and tastes amazing! The owner is there most of the time. When you enter he greets you with kindness and a genuine smile. They recently added comfortable sofa in the back for a group get together! There's nothing better than catching an early sunrise on the beach; then driving into town for morning coffee and pastries at Social Grounds! Being quite the observer, I did a little research on local coffee shops throughout Jax and decided to switch it up a little which is how I discovered Social Grounds. I happened to be one of their first customers of the day and it just (unexpectedly) happened to be on the day of their one year anniversary. Woot! Woot! The atmosphere was very welcoming! Customer service was pleasant! The food quality was great but, based upon the name, I was expecting a little more of a selection of breakfast or brunch items besides sweet pastries and bagels. But, I do understand every café isn't a Starbucks nor Panera Breads. LOL! But, the real winner for me was their coffee selections! Bravo! I ordered a slice of coffee crumble cake and a latte with caramel. The cake was exactly as expected - moist and crumble-licious! The latte was great as is without adding extra sweeteners but, I added one pack of raw sugar just because... I wanted to be extra. LOL! You know, the SJW type that embrace "WOKENESS." That being said, we stumbled across this place after our previous experience and what a fabulous change. We poked our heads in and we're immediately invited in to include our 80 pound Golden Retriever. The barista was super accommodating. She introduced us to a few interesting breakfast options. This Hawaiian Roll was infused with a sausage patty and cheese. The Strawberry muffin was equally as tasty. I opted for the homemade dirty chia my bride went dirt free. Hello flavortown !!!! Super tasty. Without inquiring, the barista acknowledged my military service and provided a discount. The entire time our Golden was the attention getter and sucked up as much as he could. I like to believe I'm pretty good at reading Yelp reviews to find out why someone gives out a five star review, and someone else gives out a 1-2 star. When I traveled to Jacksonville, I found a number of good shops but Social Grounds stood out. I had to travel several miles and ignore legitimately good competitors. Like most great coffee shops, their passion for the product comes through clearly. I always look for a clean shop, creative and unusual offerings, and something extra . Social Grounds has a mission... to support Vets. Not only do they donate a portion of their profits, but they also hire vets. It's not about their cause, but I'm an ardent supporter of those who have volunteered to protect us, it's about their passion and commitment. If they care that much about vets, I also know they care about their coffee. I wasn't disappointed . The shop is is in an edge neighborhood, you can tell it is coming up. Like a lot of these neighborhoods, you can tell it's seen some hard times. You can also tell that the good families that live and work here, are pulling it back up. The smell of great coffee hits you as soon as you open the door. You don't have to be young and hip to come here, you just have to like great coffee. The staff has that military bearing. You can tell they are used to discipline and order, but you can also tell they greet you with warmth and respect. My Order was filled quickly and executed perfectly. Social Grounds cares about the greater good. In a day in age when it's easy to overlook life's beauty, Social Grounds has stepped in to make a conscious effort to care for the local community. It's more than just a coffee shop. It's on a mission to employ homeless veterans in the city. The owners are as nice as can be, and I'm really intrigued to see their growth over the next few months. During their Grand Opening, I popped in for a while to kick back and enjoy the show. The cold brew on tap was very good. Make sure you know the difference between iced coffee and cold brew because they have both! They have a wide variety of coffee beverages, pastries and smoothies. Jordan, who handles the non-profit side of the business, hooked me up with an affogatto (hot espresso poured over creamy vanilla ice cream). #YUM Bathrooms are located in the very back of the shop, where there's actually a second entrance. Great coffee. Mission statements sez they are helping Veterans so that was a big plus. Smallish store , 4-5 tables with two countertops. Normal coffee drinks I had Expresso and pastry. Both where delicious. Pastry comes from bakery in Five points. So good I also ordered ice latte. Clean resturan although atmosphere is a little dated. Fits in to the surrounding area fine. I've become a frequent flyer of this cute little coffee shop. It's conveniently located about half a mile from UF Health, a hospital that also houses distance campuses for UF College of Pharmacy and UF College of Nursing. As a student, I was so excited to find a coffee shop that was so close to my school. A new place to study? Yesss. With instagram-worthy hand poured lattes? Double yessss. And multiple places to plug in your electronics? YESSSS. This is what grad student dreams are made of. This coffee shop embodies the growth and character of historic downtown Jacksonville. I'm so happy to see businesses like Social Grounds thriving in the Springfield area. We definitely need it. When I came in with a group of friends, we were greeted by a gentleman (I think he is the owner) who gave us a little bit of background info about how the shop came to fruition. First of all, it's owned and operated by veterans, but not just any veterans. These veterans care about their community and are actively providing support to veterans transitioning out of homelessness. Part of your purchase goes towards helping amazing causes such as the Wounded Warrior Project, K9's for Warriors, and Homeless Service Providers. Why go to Starbucks and give your money to a large corporation when you can support a local business that gives right back to the community? I ship this place so hard. One last note, their coffee shop playlist is always on point. read more
