Ok, so The Roller Girls are difficult to review, since they are technically not a business, and The…read moreArc is only their training arena. And although they play sports, you'll be hard pushed to pin them down since they're on wheels and you'll be eating their dust before you know it! The troupe brought the American sport of Roller derby to Scotland, and have grown remarkably since I first heard about them in 2007. They have expanded, moved from strength to strength and absolutely commend them for the work they put into maintaining their squad! The roller derby is a competitive sport for girls where you tactically rollerskate in a formation and attempt to defeat your opponents by bringing them off their wheels. It's not for the faint of heart but it's certainly not violent - it actually looks like super awesome fun! The girls work really hard at promoting themselves, and have had a lot of air time and news coverage over the years. With Drew Barrymore's film Whip It hitting the screens this month, I can only see their profile gaining even more credibility. They compete all over the country and occasionally beyond and I can testify to how approachable and dedicated the women are. I love them! Their tight knit team is an outstanding example of what can be achieved through dedication (and a bit of passion); I very much admire them. They are running intakes towards the end of May and I'm considering going along. I've been watching them from the wings for years and now the time has come to give it a bash! (Pun intended).

We would take the train to Yoker station, all the better on one of those biting cold days when your hands and feet feel like they may drop off and the rain pierces through your clothes, and walk through the deserted streets until we reach the turnstiles. After paying our money to get in, I will then explain that the five pounds we have just parted with has granted us the right to stand beside the pitch, which looks more suited to the ploughing of King Edwards, in the open air for the next two hours of our lives. I will also explain that the corrugated iron shell that constitutes Yoker Athletic's under-cover area offers about as much protection as a pair of mittens in a boxing match. When the teams come on the field, I will confirm that we have indeed paid to watch these hungover, over-weight train wrecks and that yes, that old man in front of us really did use the C word three times in the five word tirade of abuse he's just hurled towards the hapless referee. When half-time comes along, I will reward my visiting friend with a cold pie and assure him/her that the blob of grease that has just slurped from it on to their jacket will not come out, no matter how many times they wash it. If they survive the second half "action" until the referee's full-time whistle peeps, then, and only then, will we head to the small social club. And this time they truly will be rewarded. With an ice cold pint of Tennent's. And it will be the finest and most well deserved pint of Tennent's they will ever taste. This is a true Scottish football experience. What was it Dolly Parton said? If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. She penned that after a Clydebank - Yoker derby y'know.

Having never been on the pitches I won't comment on these. The complex is easy to find off Maryhill Road, and has its own parking lot. Sometimes this can get quite busy but there is space on a gravel section where you can park if all the spots are gone. Walking through the car park, be sure to watch out for flying footballs from the pitches as this tends to happen quite a bit. Inside the building is pretty basic. There's a foyer area where people are always milling about, change rooms and toilets for getting ready. These areas are somewhat well kept, I think they could lift their game a little bit. The hall is the part I am most familiar with, and love for sentimental reasons. This is where I first started training to play roller derby so I have many happy memories from training here with Glasgow Roller Derby. I've been back a couple of times recently for extra training sessions. The hall isn't perfect by any stretch - the floor has some bolts and rough patches in part but generally it is kept clean and tidy. They're very prompt at closing at 10 so be sure to get yourself out and into your car quick smart - once all the lights in the car park are off, this area can seem a little scary.

As it is a sport and leisure facility aimed at local people it offers an extensive range of activities from football to yoga. The complex can accommodate individuals in the fitness room which also hosts exercise classes and it can also host doubles in badminton and short tennis. If you like a game of football then the large pitches can accommodate up to 100 people - lots of teams. I've been to some of the exercises classes and I really enjoyed them. The instructor was great; she worked the class hard but I left feeling fit and very proud of myself :-)

For those who don't know, this is the home stadium of The Glasgow Tigers motorbike racing team. It replaced the old dog track, and from the size of the place, you can tell it used to race dogs. The clientelle also give that impression, but whilst the place has the vibe of a gamblers dream, it also has the vibe of a family friendly day out. There were loads of families with young kids, all trussed up in Glasgow Tiger gear, shouting for their favourite riders with an infectious excitment. And you can see why when the riders started racing - it really is exciting to watch - short snappy races, the engines loud enough to deafen the audience. Stand back though - if you get too close you get hit by sand spray as they turn wide corners on the circular track. My young friend absolutely loved it, and I couldn't recommend it as a good weekend day out to entertain the kids more. For the adults, it's great for a flutter, and for just the atmosphere of the place. Slightly seedy but friendly and comfortable. Suits Glasgow down to the ground.

The Tigers aren't one of speedway's great teams, but they have some top quality riders and the racing is generally tight and exciting. There's a bar, cheap snacks, a stall filled with racing memorabilia, but the racing is at the centre of the entertainment. Try standing by the starting gate to get the full-throttle excitement, although I prefer the third bend, where it is easier to catch the entire race. Don't watch from the bar though: the fences hide about half of the track. Far from the sectarian intensity of football, speedway does offer plenty of drama and danger.
