Midway through the rainy winter of 2022/2023, we noticed water damage in our ADU entryway. I immediately called our insurance company (State Farm) to file a claim. After a few days, we had an adjuster come out and assess the damage and ultimately approve a claim for $4k. The extent of the visible damage was focused near the door, including hardwood flooring, drywall, casing, and the door itself. That amount seemed quite low but I went with it and called a few contractors to come out and take a look. Every single contractor said they would not work with the insurance company as they would not be willing to give an itemized quote as the State Farm requested. The last contractor I spoke with recommended I contact a public adjuster as he was almost certain there was more damage that was not visible. This was a completely new concept for me and I hesitated and decided to try to work with StateFarm to increase the amount.
