So off to yelp I go to find a replacement. I came across Show and Tell on a Monday. Lindsey and I had a couple of exchanges via email where I explained the vision. While they didn't have a jersey, they did have a shirt and so be it. She was able to print and have it ready for me by Thursday. I was in West Valley on Thursday, but she stuck around on a Friday afternoon until I was able to pick it up and the shirt was perfect. My best man caught the shirt and plans to toss it at his wedding.

In fact, she shared her history of skill and passion for sewing, and she was very experienced in alterations like mine. This woman is a lifelong teacher and one of those artistic gems we never find nowadays - she worked magic. The outfit was meant to wear with no undergarments (it had a built in bra etc.) and frankly it didn't suit my body at all. She was able to detach the built in coverage, change the placement of the clasps, and the whole ensemble (an ornately adorned two piece) fit like a glove!!! I had not great experiences at the Phoenix sewing multi-brand store (not Mulqueen or Bernina). I had said I wanted to stay under $1k and had received the most appalled reaction and customer service. Contrast to Mulqueen. Walk in, all the machines are on & ready to play with. I had called to check availability of a few models and chose this location over tempe based on machines on the floor. I brought scraps with me & set to testing but was quickly confused by some of the buttons. A woman appeared right about that time, sat down next to me and walked me through it. Keep in mind this was a $500 machine not $3k or something. She even suggested a less expensive version next to it often used in their classes (Janome) ultimately decided this was too basic & I missed computerized so she walked me to the Juki I requested next & I quickly set to work testing it. This particular model (hzl f600) was over m y budget but I knew the basic functionality was similar to the ones I was considering. Absolutely loved it! Denim, slippery rayon, no issues. She said you know we might have this used. She walked me to the oasis of used/refurb machines. They had every machine I was considering-available used/refurb and under $1k!! I ultimately got the f600 used -could not be happier-and saved enough to buy way more fabric than I need. My only complaint is we need a location in Phoenix or Scottsdale!!!! The gentleman in the refurb area was also super helpful answering questions the woman couldn't (she had long gray hair but didn't catch a name). Well worth the 35 minute drive & seriously only place I will go for machines.

From designs to clothing suggestions, they clearly know what they are doing. There were several times where I switched things up last minute and Modern Threads were always ready for any change. There were also times where I dropped the ball on my end (again, I'm a volunteer!) and Vanessa/Modern Threads made sure to get me and my school's merch where it needed to be. We ran into a few bumps at the beginning of our visit. They couldn't find our reservation even…read moreafter we showed our confirmation email. This wasn't just us, several people in our class had the same issue, and they had to call the owner to sort everything out before we could start. They also mentioned that we could bring our own drinks, which sounded great, but I wouldn't recommend it for the wheel-throwing class. We didn't open our wine as no cups were provided but there was also no time during the class to drink it. That said, our instructor, Callum, was amazing! Truly hands-on, patient, and made sure everyone left with a piece they were proud of, whether they chose to keep it or not. One thing to note: I wouldn't recommend this specific class for out-of-towners. If you want to keep your piece, the process takes about a month. First firing, then returning to paint, then a second firing. You also pay separately for any pieces you choose to keep and paint. Our class was $35 per person, and it's $20 per piece for firing if you plan to come back and paint it. It's a commitment, but also two fun experiences if you're local or don't mind returning. Overall, I'm taking off one star due to our specific experience with their wheel throwing activity, but I still think the concept of this place is great, and I look forward to coming back to paint my piece as well as to try a different activity!
