I visited the Parkway Theatre in Baltimore for the MdFF music festival, and wow, this place is such a hidden gem. The interior is beautiful and much more impressive than I expected. Parking in the area was a bit tricky, but I used SpotHero and found a nearby lot. That said, I didn't feel very comfortable walking to the theater alone, so I ended up taking a Lyft instead. As a woman by myself, safety is always a priority, and that just felt like the better choice (so don't judge lol). The theater itself is surprisingly spacious. It holds a lot more people than I expected. One of the best parts for me was the legroom. The seats don't recline, but honestly, it wasn't an issue at all because the space made up for it. Overall, it's a great venue, and I'd definitely come back for another event. read more

They're very supportive of the local theater community, and yummy snacks. This theater also provides amazing volunteer experiences. Everything about this theater house screams community. I had to update my review because SNF Parkway is a perfect example of a place that just oozes unfulfilled potential. Let me explain. SNF Parkway is a movie theater (kind of - more on that below) located within an incredible space! The theater opened in 1915, supposedly making the original Parkway one of the oldest movie theaters on the East Coast. (For context, that means it was showing silent movies, possibly with live music played on a piano in the theater - this is all before sound, before color.) The movie theater closed in 1978 and sat empty until it reopened in 2017 after an amazing restoration. I've seen two movies at the Parkway (most recently, a screening of Texas Chain Saw Massacre around Halloween). The theater is stunning. It's hard to explain, but the theater was sort of perfectly "partially restored" - it's been restored, but it's history is visible in every detail (you can see some of the theater's original paint on the walls and on the dome of the theater - an intentional choice). When walking into our screening recently, I took several pictures. It's that stunning. And it makes for an incredible space for older movies in particular, in my opinion. So what's my rub with the place? It's completely underutilized. They spent millions of dollars (reportedly $18.2 million) to restore it just so it can stand empty most of the time. On a regular day, there might not be a screening at the theater. Their calendar is unpredictable; their schedule chaotic. For example, this weekend: nothing on the schedule for Friday, a holiday market (no screenings) on Saturday; and a screening of old Christmas movie shorts on Sunday. The following weekend, however, they're showing three movies each day - all 2024/2025 releases of the extreme independent variety and that don't appear to have any connection to each other. They've had problems. In 2023, the theater cancelled all screenings and events and laid off almost all staff. It has reopened, but ... as what? Is it just a home for the Maryland Film Festival? It would be wild and sad to me that this building remain unused most of the year and basically serve as a rental space except for the few days a year it's needed for the film festival! I love movies. I love going to the movies. I really hope that the new executive director (who started in 2024) has more success with the space and the festival. I would love to be able to see more movies at SNF Parkway. And I'd love to see it be a little more alive - full of people and movies and events. Because it makes me a little sad now. read more

We are so lucky to have this resource in the city. This is the home of the Maryland film festival, and I have to say this was my very first time here. There are three theaters in this building theater. One is obviously the largest it's two floor seating with a mezzanine and balcony, theater two and three are small classroom types with a projector. I never saw this place before the renovation, but the renovation is really beautiful and theater. One just has all these really intricate details and the seats were actually really comfortable and the spacing between the aisles and the seat seats are really well done. The area can get a little sketchy at night, but during the festival, it was really safe and they really did maximize the usage of the theater. They have lots of different programming so I'll definitely be back outside of the Maryland film festival but such a great space and theater and their concession stand is good and they also have a bar down in the main hangout area if you will. The larger bathrooms are on the second floor and by the time I spent a weekend here I was able to find all the hidden entryways as it can feel like a maze if you're trying to access theater two and three read more

About to visit this theater once again! It's such a gem! If you not only love movies but architecture, this place is your vibe! Every-time I have come, the staff are so friendly! I always come up with some question when I am here and they are so willing to answer. I love how they also have plaques showing what something is or something history driven for you to read. I love how there are two sections...which I failed to realized until the guys was explaining the lower area was getting pretty full you should try the upper balcony...and there we have it, there is a upper balcony!! So happy I found that out because it was actually a great place to sit and enjoy the movie! If you aren't able to walk up the beautiful stairs they do have elevators! There are bathrooms on each level that are very clean, the only issue is two stalls on the upper balcony didn't have toilet paper. If you need some popcorn, candies, soda or an adult beverage they do have that at their concession stand. They also have the prices for the tickets there and yes they have student discount! The parking for me was pretty decent. I parked on the side of a street that was a block from the theater. It was free to park and when I came back out, my car was still there in one piece. The area does look a bit sketchy but thus far I have not had any issues. All in all even with the small amount of showings they have, I will continue to visit when I am in the area!! read more

I have driven past The Parkway Theatre over and over again since construction concluded about 5 years ago. It's not everyday that Baltimore City gets a new cinema and this one is really breathtaking! It is not one of those overly modernized theatres with fancy leather recliners and counter to seat dinner service. This place is like a classic theatre with stunning architecture throughout. It is truly breathtaking! The chipped paint, the cathedral-like stone, and opulent woodwork all contribute to the strong character of the place. From the upper balcony (yes, it has an upper balcony), you can get a perfect view of the large screen and the beautiful ceiling dome and intricate architecture. I could have just stared at the ceiling all night and been happy! The sound and quality of the screen were also great! Even with people snacking away, laughing, and whispering throughout the movie it was never a distraction because the sound was excellent. I didn't get a chance to try an concessions as we were running a bit late but the popcorn sure did smell amazing! They don't make theatres like this one anymore and I felt very grateful and blown away that something this spectacular is right on North Avenue here in Baltimore! I will definitely be back - I just wish they had more showings more often! read more

Parking was very interesting! I circled the area a couple times to eventually find something and hoped that it wasn't a bad spot. Th area also is a bit sketchy. If you're not from the area (which I'm not) you might be a little on guard. Directly across from the theater was a huge crowd. I had no idea why so I ran inside the theater quickly. Ha! Catch me if you can! Anyway... Check in was easy and quick, she simply scanned my ticket from my phone. Inside: Cool mysterious theater where I saw THE HOUSE OF GUCCI. The theater definitely has nostalgic vibes including the concession stand. Only issue I had with the theater was the seating which can't be changed. If you sit at the bottom as opposed to the balcony your neck is tilted upward the entire time due to the position of the screen and the seats. I shifted in my seat a few times to give my neck a rest. read more

I came here to watch a preview of "House of Gucci." This movie was outstanding. The quality of the SNF Parkway's audio and visual definitely contributed to my great experience. There are three theaters; my movie was in Theater 1. Things to keep in mind * The neighborhood is not the best nor did it feel completely safe. No need to lollygag. Park your car and go straight inside. * If you plan to sit upstairs, have your fitbit/apple watch ready. I did not see an elevator so if you are challenged with your mobility, the first floor seating is best. Pros * The theater is very regal. When you enter, the foyer is very inviting. * My movie was in the main theater. There is an upstairs and downstairs area. The movie screen is large enough to accommodate both views. If you sit on the main floor, you will be looking up, but its not uncomfortable. If you sit upstairs, you will be looking down. * The surround sound is superb. * Their concession is the best because a) the snacks and drinks are extremely cost effective b) they serve beer and wine. For example, a small popcorn cost $4. Yes, you read that correctly. I highly recommend enjoying this gem. read more

This was my first time going to SNF parkway theatre. Thanks to Yelp I was able to add a new experience and help a local business near me. There is no free parking lot for the theatre but thankfully we arrived early enough to snag free spot on the street right next to the establishment. When we walked in, we were greeted at the door by staff and given directions to hang out in the lounge until doors open. It was small but nice crowd. While we waited we listened to a few people anxiously awaiting for the movie to start. When doors opened we were informed immediately and headed straight to the snack bar before going upstairs to our seats. The snacks were really reasonable. The XL popcorn was 7 dollars which is a pretty good price in my opinion. They also offered local beer and a few spritzers which I think was a very nice touch. The outside of the theatre does not match the inside per se. The outside was very modern but the inside is very vintage. I don't think it was bad though. The ceilings and details to the walls added to my experience. Another beautiful building in such a unique city. I highly recommend this place. We will certainly be back for date night. The only downside is if you sit too far up, the bars block the bottom of the screen. So choose your seat wisely. read more

Interesting old theatre that's been renovated and semi-modernized. I went to an advance screening of House of Gucci here and it was a fascinating space. The renovation didn't restore the theatre to its former glory as a lot of the paint is still missing from the walls and the artwork on the wall is mostly faded. I had mixed feelings about this, on one hand it gave the space sort of a spooky and haunting feel and definitely made it look as old as it is but on another it seemed a bit tacky and run-down. Regardless of how anyone feels about aesthetics of the renovation this is still a really cool place for a movie and a unique experience of a small old local neighborhood theatre that's tragically mostly gone by the wayside in Baltimore. Highly recommend and am definitely going to try to get back, places like these are critical to the livelihood of inner-city Baltimore and Station North in particular which has become quite a fascinating area for food and entertainment. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because the acoustics where I was sitting were not fantastic...I had trouble hearing a lot of what the people on the movie were saying but am going to try to sit in a different place next time. read more

The best way to see a movie is front row balcony of a historic movie palace! That's exactly what I did at the Parkway theater. They keep the lights on before the movie so you can take photos and marvel at the architectural details that you don't get at a modern theater. It's one of the smaller movie palaces. The theater does need work to fully restore it to its former glory. If you go, make sure you see a movie in main theater, which is the historic one. I look forward to seeing it fully restored someday. read more

What a welcomed addition, The Parkway is. This monolith of a building sits out like a pearl in a bed of oysters. It's old school architecture meets modern styling is unlike ANY building in the Station North District/ Neighborhood. One of the beautiful things about this building is that they have maintained a great deal of the original architecture. Part of the exterior is the original building built back in 1915. The other sections or additions built through several iterations through the 70s and the 2000s give a modern feel. The final design is very eye-catching. It completely stands out in the neighborhood. Upon entering you were greeted with very clean modern/contemporary design aesthetic. The interior is immaculate and appointed with contemporary Furniture. This theater happens to stand three levels. And the update they have added modern conveniences such as an elevator. They also have tiny whimsical details such as contemporary wallpaper of popcorn kernels on a magenta background in the bathroom. I absolutely love it. Recently, I had the pleasure of taking in a viewing of 'The World According to Andre' at the Parkway and I must say, My experience left me completely sated. This moment is EXACTLY my dream experience at a movie viewing. The viewing room was sparse. I didn't have to compete with loud mouthed patrons, chatty Cathy's, or any of that ilk. I was able to settle in my rather mid century inspired minimalistic chair (well padded/cushioned) and could languish in the vivid, opulent, finely educated world ALT has pulled us into. This production was so well done and gave volumes of information in such a short period of time. The way he is revered within the fashion industry is absolutely astounding and appreciated. I really needed to see this and I'm glad I was able to view this nearly solo (score!) I Look forward to returning so I can explore the building a little bit more. This is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

This is a great visit! Just blocks from the University of Baltimore and MICA...A historic theater has been reborn in the Station North Arts District. The Theater was renovated with support of Foundations and is an Anchor for the Maryland Film Festival. What an amazing renovation. It was a grand theater and you can see it from the photos on the walls and in what was preserved. The building sat vacant on North And Charles since it closed in 1977. They opened the doors, found parts to save and worked on keeping some of what once was in the work. They added modern conveniences, tech and screens...and a bar. It is very much worth googling the story in the Baltimore Sun which showed about 50 pictures. The Theater goes out of its way to find important films and not what others have from Hollywood. They show Independents, documentaries, foreign films which are often accompanied by lectures. Sometimes you get classic films and some fun theme nights. We saw the documentary Quest, which followed a North Philly family that struggled like many do in cities, but that intimately demonstrates the love, kindness, compassion and determination of families in neighborhoods struggling with poverty and violence. But this is not a movie review. This theater is a must visit and has helped make Station North a busy destination entertainment neighborhood at night. With the Wind Up Space, several other music vendors, the Charles Theater, galleries, old bars, Joe Squared Pizza and fine dining like Bottega...this is a fun night out. Check their schedule, get a drink at Club Charles, and dinner after the movie. read more

I had a flier for Mama Africa and drove to Baltimore to see it. Without consulting Google Maps I just parked and walked to where the address was, thinking it couldn't be the old theater that I knew for sure was closed. Well it was and so I got to visit the Parkway Theater. I've driven past the Parkway Theater numerous times and I've even posed for a picture or Pearson's Florist next door. I am such a devotee of The Wire. Seeing the Parkway Theater up and running I knew that I would have a great time. I think that the rehabbing done inside was good. Not a total gutting that erased the past but also not an extensive rehabilitation of a nearly 100 year old space. The film I saw was on the 3rd floor so I didn't get to see the main theater space. Neither did I peek into the Second floor theater. From the looks of the film schedule I will be returning, I especially want to check out one of the free films they have on Thursday nights. Really digging this theater in town, and the fact that it is one of the oldest places to see films in the country. The history behind this location, as well as how much time and care went into the renovations really makes it stand out! When you walk in and pick your seats either at bottom or balcony level you feel like you are being transported into the past. Really love the fact that they kept some of the old touches and original decor. They also have a small concessions area when you walk in and a bar with a ton of options (many of them local as well) if you want some adult beverages during your film. There are some great aspects of the Parkway that should be highlighted; it's charming restoration-style aesthetic, it's sophisticated commitment to cinema, it's convenience in terms of locale. However, my last trip here to see Jurassic World wasn't flawless. Firstly, I went on a day with pretty normal weather but the day prior was a 90 degree day. I imagine this played a role in the theatre's heat, which was really uncomfortable. I asked an employee if they could turn up the A/C because the lobby was cool while the theatre wasn't. He told me he wasn't sure they could do that. My friend and I also had terrible trouble with the audio acoustics. The theatre is large. With a film like Jurassic World, the echoes and loud music were earth shattering but in contrast, normal film dialogue was echoey and hard to discern. It wasn't the best experience I've had at the a theatre, but I believe I would come back eventually if it called to me. It's hard to prefer an experience at Parkway over a film at Cinemark when the cost is the exact same, but major theaters boast comfortable seating and fabulous sound systems. read more

I LOVE this place. They show a lot of movies that you really can't see anywhere else - Shoplifters, Oscar shorts, Sundance shorts, etc. There is a bar in the lobby and you can also buy little bites. They also frequently work with the Hopkins Film Centre screening student and faculty productions which is a great collaboration with the Baltimore community. read more

Last night was my first time at The Parkway. I went to see Stephanie Barber's The Jungle and it was excellent. There was a great crowd filling the bar and lobby before the show. I have been to SNF twice, both times the movie screened on second floor so haven't yet experienced the main auditorium. Clean, well-managed, friendly staff. Renovations retained details of original building while upgrading theatres and lobbies. Clean and attended to bathrooms. My only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is parking in that area is inconvenient. Either pay for a garage, circle side streets for metered street parking, or for a later showing search for free street parking and walk a few blocks. read more

I was excited to see this old theatre looking so nice from the outside but was quite disappointed when I actually stepped inside. I was expecting a beautiful restoration but instead I encountered an urban ruin. It was quite depressing. Broken lattices, half the proscenium missing and everywhere peeling walls of ancient paint. The seating is new, however the arrangement doesn't always lend itself to comfortable film viewing; many seats are angled view simply because the newly installed screen comes too far forward. Seats on the lower level are quite uncomfortable for leg room and arm rests much too short. Upstairs seats are completely different, more comfortable. However, every row is on its own level but the safety railing will obstruct the view of anyone under 6 feet tall. Sound system is not great either. On the plus side, the restrooms are very nice and the staff very friendly. read more

I'm thrilled to have this theater in the neighborhood. Firstly, it's beautiful, the gorgeous theater itself is worth the price of admission, and on top of that the programming is spectacular. I always discover amazing things at the Maryland Film Fest, and it's wonderful that the people who choose the movies shown there have a year round theater. Great to see this newly renovated movie theater on Station North district finally opening after 30+ years.
