There were some buildings lit up and trees lined with lights, but where were all the main attractions and interactive displays? With so many people and the event so spread out, I felt it was hard to really find anything. The displays we did see (after waiting in long lines) were underwhelming. Mini light city was a cool idea, but on the night we went, it started closer to 6pm (rather than 5pm). I think the highlight of the evening was Impulse (sit on one end of the seesaw to see lights and hear some sounds as you go up and down) and The Pool (hope on circular platforms as they change color). If you start on the wrong end, you'll miss the nightly parade. The festival did offer a variety of food and beverage stands throughout, which was a nice touch. If you aren't already spending the day in Baltimore, I wouldn't make a trip specifically for this festival. If you do go, make sure you check out the schedule and map before hand to maximize your experience. Be prepared for massive crowds!

It's a 1-man show, kept us enthralled with his intelligent, engrossing, thought-provoking dialogue about his relationship with those he loves, and the connection between love, God, spirituality, etc. Outstanding production at the Horowitz Center for the Arts at Howard Community College. Who would've thought that a top tier, certainly as good as anything in DC--was in the burbs, but it is--and well worth seeing. We've also seen a baroque music concert at the same Center for the Arts, and it was first-class as well. Check it out--less crowds, we found an excellent Vietnamese pho restaurant close-by, world class performances!

I got invited by a friend to come see her daughter in the Black Nativity. I was super excited and…read moreinvited other friends to join me. This play was good community theater. The songs got me right into the Christmas spirit and gave me that old time black church gospel vibe. The first half was dedicated to the nativity that we're all familiar with. The Arena Players had their own special twist on the story, but the end result was the same" unto us a child is born. Jesus Christ, Savior of the world. The 2nd half takes you to church with testimonies followed by some good ole gospel music. They had you singing along, clapping your hands, and tapping your feet. They took us to church. The only reason they're not getting 5 stars is because the audio was none existent. No one was one had a mic on, and had I not been sitting in the front row it would have been extremely hard to hear them. It's a real shame because their voices were beautiful. My friends who have seen other production agreed with me, but said the plays they've seen there that they did have mics on. Perhaps they had some technical difficulties. I hope they fix that before their next production in January. They also have a Youth Theater program for ages 4.5 to 18. The Love of My Life and I were curious about this place, as we love movies, so we stopped in for a look. It turns out that Foreign Cinema sells - get this - Japanese anime and "karate" movies and merchandise. And I mean the type that used to be run on Channel 54 on Saturday afternoons during the 1980s: MST3K-type films that people turned the sound down and made up their own dialogue. It was so incredibly cheesy that it was funny. The sales associate actually kind of laughed with us and readily admitted that the shop carried quite a bit of that type of thing; she was a highlight of the visit. (Her bright Manic Panic pink hair, six hundred piercings, and "Southpole" glittery outfit kind of accentuated the strangeness, I have to say.) The boyfriend is actually into Japanese animation and Asian-style films, so he spent a bit more time in here than I might have. Still, they do carry quite a bit of product if you're into this sort of thing. No, it's not pirated or copied DVDs - it looks like pretty authentic stuff (mainly because most of the titles and box covers aren't in English). If this is your "thing", you'll enjoy this place. Just try not to laugh when you see the cheesy movie on the flatscreens -usually, if these movies follow the standard plot, it's the old Asian guy who offered the advice to the young guy in the first place, but it's the young one that gets his butt kicked. And the old guy just sits on the sideline and laughs uproariously. Good times!
