Every time I'm in San Mateo, a pit stop to Sharetea is an absolute must (their SF locations suck). That day, it was a blistering 88 degrees and it way too hot to have for balls in my mouth. Tapioca balls that is. What better way to cool down then with a slushy dessert at Snack. Not a very original or descriptive name but this little gem seems to be a favorite among natives so you know it's legit. Most of the menu is in Spanish but as their vague name indicates, Snack sells snacks. Mexican snacks to be exact: ice cream, popsicles, milkshakes, fresh juices, smoothies, fresh cut fruit, and Mexican street food. Everything is under $7 and they accept CC's. We ordered a Melonada and Tostilocos to share from the nice lady cashier. As we waited for our order, we contemplated sitting at one of their thong wearing booty chairs in the back. The designer must of had Amber Rose in mind when making those bootylicious chairs. There was no A/C so we sat at a table near the doorway to catch some breeze. Yes, I know, we're hot weather pansies. The Melonada is just like a mangonada (w/ mango slush, chamoy) but with cantaloupe ($5.50). It was super refreshing with a vibrant sweetness from the ripen cantaloupe and icy mango slush. They were easy on the chamoy (pickled fruit) so you got a nice sweet, sour, spicy and tangy taste but it wasn't overkill. Really hits the spot on a hot day. I love all types of offal and weird food concoctions so I was excited to try the Tostilocos, a popular Mexican street food ($5.50). It's made and served from a bag of tortilla chips that's topped with pickled pork skin, cucumber, jicama, chamoy, lime juice, Japanese peanuts. 5 stars for the Fresas con Crema (strawberries w/ cream) ($5.5). So sweet and creamy with fresh strawberries. Comes with granola, coconut shreds, & raisins on top (I opted out of the coconut and raisins). Generous portion of strawberries with the perfect proportion of cream. Strawberries are coated with a strawberry syrup similar to strawberry pies, so even if the strawberries aren't in season, they'll be sweet. 3 stars for the Mangoneada (mango, mango slushie, tajin, tamarind/tajin covered straw) ($5.5). Others mentioned gelato--this does not have gelato, it is more of a mango slush that is mostly icy and not smooth at all. Ours had an overpowering amount of tajin (Mexican chili spice that's slightly sour), so I didn't care for it much. The chilled mango chunks were refreshing, but also a little mushy (perhaps from being chilled too long, or just from sitting in the mango slushie). Don't let the nice pictures deceive you! They also have $2 fruit bars that we didn't try, though the strawberry/cream one looked really good--I'll be sure to try this next time! They also have a nice assortment of different ice creams, including guanabana (soursop, which is similar to cherimoya), which I also want to try next time I'm in the area. I had heard many good things about this place so I decided to give it a try. I personally found this place about average. I came in between 7-8pm and there were quite few people inside. There was a small line of people waiting to order and one girl taking the orders and the other making the orders. I believe there should have been two individuals working on the order to make the turn around much shorter. As the girl taking the orders could not help out until there was no line. Several places for you to sit and eat your deserts, and there are quite few things to choose from. So selection is very good. The cleanliness of this place could have been much better. As I sat down and ate my banana split I noticed some spots with trash on the floor. I also noticed the counter where you have some toppings to add to your desert más pretty messy as well. read more

Came here after attending the gluten free expo, Mexican snack shop with ice cream, smoothies and snacks. I don't know much about Mexican snacks so I was at a loss. I saw someone order the mangonada. It was huge cup of mangos with sorbet and sauce that resemble plum, and I didn't realize how tart it would be. It was refreshing in a way and an eye opener as I had to drive back to the east bay and be stuck in the awful traffic. Would like to come back try other snacks. Friends were in town, so that always forces us to venture out and try new spots, and I'm so glad Snacks was one of the spots! It's a hole in the wall, for sure, and it's away from the "main" downtown area, but boy was it worth it. It was by far, one of the best places I've been to. My girlfriend loves anything Mexican, so she was super excited to try this place. We couldn't decide what to order because most of the ice cream flavors were in Spanish. Our friends got the waffle, and it was really good. We opted for a double scoop in a waffle cone (really reasonably priced), and with really unique flavors! We tried cinnamon and lucama. I wasn't sure what lucama was, so I asked to try it - and it was love. I can't even describe the flavor...maple syrup? The ice cream had really good flavor, and it was super creamy. Because my girlfriend loves tamarind, I got her a jarritos tamarind soda. She was happy. I really can't wait to be in San Mateo to try this place again. That's all due to Yelp and their fantastic mobile app. With all the fantastic Chinese and Japanese cuisine in downtown San Mateo, I was sure we'd end up at an Asian or mainstream dessert place. There's a plethora of choices from popular bubble tea places like Bambu or Gong Cha to mainstream dessert specialists like Cream. That's why Snacks, more fully named Snacks Antojitos Mexicanos, caught my eye. With stellar reviews and delicious looking Mexican desserts, I was eager to drop by. It's located on North B Street which is a bit farther than the main section of downtown on South B Street. We got confused on direction several times and the terrible Apple Maps walking directions brought up by Yelp (launch Google Maps!) didn't help. We ended up leaving our parking space and driving and as everyone knows San Mateo parking stinks! Numerous patrons were illegally parked in the area but luckily Snacks is a quick order with most items packed ready to go. Our order: Bionocos - the pictures show a fruit heavy dessert with possibly ice cream. Looking it up, it's described as a fruit salad and that's accurate. Lots of chilled pieces of cut mango, strawberry and banana are covered with a layer of condensed milk and topped with some coconut shreds and raisins. There's no ice cream though you could probably order some and it's a delicious and semi healthy option (it's fruit right!). Mangoneada - $5.50. A plastic cup filled with diced mango, mango slushee and a fantastic straw covered with sweetener chili powder. A fellow patron said it wasn't spicy at all but when I first tried the chili powder was too strong and I didn't like it. However, with time, the outer coating is gone and it mixes with the sweet mango slush and before I knew it I was sucking and slurping on that sweet chili powder covered straw. It's a novel sweet spicy flavor note for those of us who don't have Mexican dessert often though I know chili powder with fruit and especially mangoes is common in Mexican cuisine. I loved it! Overall, great dessert place and you have to love the contrast between my great sushi dinner and my great Mexican desserts. You have to LOVE the Bay Area! So many flavors that are new to me however, I fell in love with Mamey in a Waffle Cone adding fresh Mango on top. How will I get to the other flavors? Customer service is friendly and accommodating to a noob like myself that still doesn't really know what Mamey is other than I keep coming back for it. Parking is the doozy. At first, the flavor combination was a bit strange to me - spicy, sour, and sweet all rolled into one candy - but soon I couldn't get enough of them! After sampling a few (lucuma, mamey, chongo, and mango) I still couldn't decide. In my frustration, I settled on a nance pelote (ice cream bar) - a flavor I hadn't even tried yet (go figure!). The guy helping me was so sweet though and took the liberty of handing me an ice cream sample just to make sure I would like the flavor. He even gave me a sample of the Fresas con Crema, which had super fresh strawberries and a delicious creamy topping that was well-balanced and velvety smooth. I'll get that one next time! The service was incredibly friendly, personable, and patient even though I took forever to decide. They're also really fast and had my mangeoneada ready before I even paid. Regardless of your race, if you grew up in the Mission District of SF like I did, chances are this will be a familiar flavor combination. The other dessert we tried was fresas con crema: sliced strawberries with granola, coconut shavings, raisins (we opted for none of that business), in something a little thinner than sweet condensed milk. I was in heaven, he would've liked more fruit variety, so the bionicos (same set up, but with fruit salad) will be perfect next time. For savory eats, we chose chicharron preparado, basically a fried crisp base (some use pork skin, but thankfully Snacks uses flour) topped with sour cream, cabbages, tomatoes, hot sauce & translucent strips of what we thought were pickled onions. I was hesitant but tried a small piece & I knew instantly it wasn't an onion. I found out later these were pickled pork skins. He & I kept pushing them aside b/c the texture was slimy & gelatinous, almost like raw fish. I cringed all day whenever I thought back to that piece I ate. Everything else was all good, just beware the pickled stuff if you're vegetarian (or just weirded out like me.) On the hunt for some dessert after lunch at the nearby China Bee, I quickly seized upon this place, because I do love me some mangos. ... so yeah, I obviously ordered the mangoneadas the first time I came here. The counter where you actually order from, and the cooler with the fruit bars, are both around the standard counter height though, and therefore shouldn't pose too large of a problem. And while they have bar and stool seating off to the side, the front of the shop consists of a bunch of four tops, most of which are accessible (some are too far or too close together). Are you craving for something sweet and sour but also fruity? Well Snacks is the place to be! We found this little place on yelp and wanted to try the mangoneadas! Coming from the San Gabriel valley, I've always been able to get chicharrons, tostilocos or fruit cups at stands or in little restaurants commonly but I rarely find anything that's a reasonable price and size here in the bay. When we first entered, we were a little confused because a good portion of the menu on the wall was in Spanish. While there was some translation that helped, the pictures were the biggest help. I think the cashier realized we were a little confused so he explained what went inside the different desserts and even taught us how to customize the dessert in a way that would make it sweeter or more spicy depending on preference. My boyfriend and I were already a little full from a previous meal so we only ordered the mangoneadas. We didn't tweak our order because we wanted to taste the original one. The mangoes were incredibly sweet thanks to the chamoy and the little spicy kick you get just makes it all the better. We weren't sure what we were supposed to do with the tamarind stick so again, we had to ask our cashier how we were supposed to do it. Thank goodness he was such a great sport and showed us how to savor it. Also, when you come try this place, you're going to definitely want to sit in their chairs that have different kinds of posteriors painted on the back of them.
