Charm Thai Eatery - Thai Near Me - San Mateo, California

My husband took it to go for us, we got pad se Ew chicken and beef, steamed veggies and spring roles, all were fairly good. Their regular spice is good, and we tried level 1 spice which was too spicy for me Can't comment on service or the interior as it was a to go pick up order Overall fairly decent spot read more

Charm Thai is great place for some comfort food. Their Pad Thai, fresh rolls, Pad Kee Mow and fried rice are all good choices. Their Green and Panang curries are great for a cold rainy day meal. If you like a nice kick to your food, 3 out 5 is a good spice level to be at. The service is friendly and efficient. Definitely check them out! read more

This cute little Thai spot in San Mateo has packs a powerful punch of BIG flavor. As you walk in, you are immediately greeted with the delicious aroma of freshly made Thai food. And although the dinning area is small, it gets filled very quickly... But, don't you worry, the staff is constantly buzzing around to ensure your glass is never empty and all questions are easily and quickly answered if you have any. This place doesn't boast a vast menu but what was listed was truly delicious. I opted for a some traditional Pad Thai and my boyfriend had a delectable red curry dish. Everything came out piping hot and super fresh. All the veggies were perfectly crunchy and both dishes were exceptionally seasoned. I was very impressed with the portion size as well, as I was able to take at least half of my plate home for leftovers. The star of the show for me was really the lychee iced tea though. I'm a lychee lover through and through and never had anything quite like this. It was so refreshing and delicious without being overly sweet. I highly recommend it. All in all, the experience was great and so was the food. Definitely a place worth stopping by again if i'm in the area! read more

We searched all over the Bay Area for great Pad Thai, that most amazing of Thai dishes that is usually botched in some way: goopy, sticky, overly sweet, overly tart with tamarind, or any combination of those. Finally we found our best in the area at Charm Thai, a tiny and obscure place on El Camino. They get Pad Thai right in almost every way: not gluey, not too sweet or tart, and full of flavor. Since then we've returned for other dishes and they're great too... so Charm has become the only Thai place we go to in the area. Yum! read more

Our go-to for authentic Thai food. I'm a tofu snob and only like Thai restaurants that use fresh tofu that's not pre-fried. Charm uses fresh tofu. We usually get red curry with tofu and green curry with tofu. Plenty of veggies and full of deliciousness. We usually order take out read more

I absolutely loved this place. Very cozy atmosphere, quick service and hot/fresh food. Everything was fantastic and flavorful without trying too hard. I appreciated that they put all the fixings on the side of the pad thai. We also got the yellow coconut curry with a side of rice, but dug in before I could take a picture. Both were incredible. Top thai food in San Mateo easily. read more

Delicious dishes - my favorites are the pad thai, larb and pad see ew. The servers are lovely and the restaurant is not too loud. We were in the mood for Thai food and went to Charm Thai on a Saturday night. It wasn't busy and we were seated right away next to the only occupied table. Moments later, another group came they were seated next to us so suddenly it became very loud in a nearly empty restaurant. It would have been more pleasant to sit further away from others. The food was good. We ordered pad Thai (nice size order), fried fish (so good), and chicken noodle soup (a bit plain and bland, I always forget this and order it again). read more

I've been looking for a Thai spot in San Mateo and decided to try this one out. We ordered the Pad Thai and Pla Pad Cha. The Pad Thai was mainly noodles, didn't have a lot of tofu or chicken and was on the sweeter side. The Pla Pad Cha was flavored amazingly but it was lacking sauce. The fish was fresh and crispy! Servers were nice and the food came quite quick. read more

Service was average. The meat for both dishes I would say was 2 oz maximum each. The meat for both the pad kee mao $15.95 and beef noodle soup $15.50 was tough. It was not tender nor chewy. The beef noodle soup was very basic packed with spice flavors. The pad kee mao had decent flavor, but was very oily. Ambiance is decent with some decor not super crowded tables. read more

Always so good and fresh. I've tried a lot of Thai food places and nothing compares. Portions are good and spice levels are accurate . Level 3 pad Thai is the best. Their Thai iced tea is so delicious too! read more

I came with my friend because we had a craving for Thai food. The service was good, the server was welcoming. The place is not too big but is decorated in a charming way. We ordered three dishes which was the Chicken Satay, Sweet Sol, Chicken Pad Thai, , and Coconut rice. The Chicken Satay was a bit dry but with the sauce it was still pretty good. The Sweet Sol was fried well and the inside was tender without bones. The last dish we had was the Chicken Pad Thai which is one of my favorites in Thai cuisine. It had the right amount of seasoning and the noodles were just right. The coconut rice was a good accompaniment to the dishes. I have been to this restaurant two times and it is a good find and pretty consistent. read more

We love ordering from here. Love delivery. We enjoy everything we order. Charm Thai is aptly named. It is quaint and homey and the dishes coming out of the kitchen are cooked to order, with telltale signs like fresh herbs, tender crisp veggies and proteins that are delectable and taste marinated and cooked quickly at high heat not stewed or slow cooked. My pumpkin chicken red curry had a perfect kick of thai chilis, with milder ingredients like basil, green beans and bell peppers. Chicken and pumpkin portions. were generous. Rice was slightly more sticky and glutinous than I prefer, giving an indication of being prepped and cooked in advance and in bulk- It perfectly complimented the curry adding some appetizing texture and viscosity to the dish. The Prig King Beef that I took to go was amazing reheated the next day. The string beans and beef were the stars, accented by kaffir lime, basil and chili paste. Of course, being me, I have to shout out the service, best illustrated by the way the singular service person hustled amongst the tables despite wearing an orthopedic boot that ought to have slowed him down. He kept my glass full of perfectly brewed lack iced tea. The addition of fresh lime and a tiny sprig of fresh clipped mint spoke to the level of detail that this restaurant goes to enhance customer experience. It's the little details and this tiny eatery does great take out, but the dine in experience is definitely on a five star level and a reasonably priced one, at that. read more

We ordered: Papaya Salad - ok, bit too much fish sauce and sweetness for some people. Maybe can ask for less dressing as it overpowers the whole salad. Yellow Curry - sweet Pad Se-Ew - decent but sweet which I'm not used to Thai Fried Rice - pretty good Spicy Eggplant - the dish we liked as it wasn't sweet Garlic Fish - fried well but wish the sauce was on the side as it was too salty and sweet I heard a lot of people say Charm Thai is really goodso I thought the sweetness would be more balanced but most of us thought everything was too sweet, even the Pad Se Ew which normally isn't sweet. Otherwise everything was cooked well and food came out fast. The staff were attentive. read more

Came here on a Saturday around 12pm with a party of 2 and were seated immediately. Service is prompt and food came out fast. Dishes: Tom Yum (Shrimp) - delicious! Tom yum is my favorite thing to order at all Thai restaurants. This iteration is great, I'm a big fan of the large chunks of onion since it's a bit more of a unique take but I liked how the flavor profile worked out. You also get nice big chunks of mushrooms and tomatoes, it really hits the spot. Pumpkin Curry (Chicken) - delicious and filling. The curry has great flavor and pairs really well with chicken as the protein. High recommend Other dishes: * brown jasmine rice (also recommend this - healthy and delicious!) * thai ice coffee * string beans Between two people these dishes were the perfect portions for us. We finished everything, no leftovers. read more

During NBA All Star, you know we had to get away from the city for a bit to enjoy some peace and quiet. We were visiting a friend in San Mateo and they told us about this amazing Thai place down the street. I would 100% call this a hidden gem. We were so happy to order an assortment of items from the menu, grab take away and eat it at house. Amazing. Honestly this got me on a Thai kick for a good 3 weeks. Quick service, great customer service and 10/10 recommend. read more

I have been getting take out from this place for several years. I ordered exactly the same thing I have been ordering for 2-3 years. Tonight the Cashew Nut Chicken was so bland and very thinly cut. . Had no taste to it whatsoever. I order "Regular" when it comes to how spicy I want it. Been ordering that way for years. So bland. I was ordering 1-2 for the spiciness but had to go back to regular which has been fine. Not tonight. The food was BLAND. B L A N D ! read more

I've been to this cozy Thai restaurant located on the main road of San Mateo couple of times over 8 years ago and loved all my visits and food ate here. This is for the latest order of food we got doordashed from Charm Thai. Hubby was feeling under the weather and was craving something hot and spicy to sooth this throat. Tom yum soup chicken : a classic soup, very tasty, comforting and delicious. Had the kick to it. He loved it. We got the medium spice but should have gone up to spicy. Pad ke mao: another classic that I love to eat at Thai restaurants. Here it's pretty good, thick sauces coated and sticking well to flat rice noodles, fresh chicken and veggies. Came piping hot. Again we got medium but I can definitely handle much more. Honestly I finished my noodles in 1 sitting. Now am not sure if my appetite went up or the portion size was smaller. I believe it's the 2nd one haha Packaging was clean and intact. read more

It's still hard to find a decent pad Thai spot in the Bay Area with San Mateo being no exception. I been here about 5+ times. Mostly for indoor dining lunch and once for takeout. My go to item would be ordering the pad thai with beef. Since I been back they have updated the menus once with the lunch specials at $15 now. This is my first time eating here since the updated menu. The pad Thai today was a bit watery and ketchupy for me. I requested a 9 spicy and got a 6 spicy with a 10 sweet.I also ordered a coke with the price coming out to 22.47. Double wammy in my book. The dish was a super let down I even asked the manager if they changed cooks to which the manager replied no. Overall I was coming here for the pad Thai. read more

Small restaurant and easy to miss on busy El Camino Real. I was craving pad see yew for the longest time, and with our go to Thai spot closed for business near us, I didn't know where to turn to. We also had an appointment for our son on a Friday evening, so it really limited our options of where to go that was kind of convenient. My husband's work sometimes orders from Charm Thai, so we decided to satisfy my pad see yew cravings with them. Easy to order online, and they're only doing takeout. It was ready in the promised timeframe and I peaked and saw all their orders they had cooked. Don't be like me, read the sign about the pick up window in the back through their gate, instead of heading to their front door. Pad see yew with chicken ($14.50) seems like the going price around the area. It was piping hot and a good portion. Some places will use Chinese broccoli, and some will use American broccoli, I can go either way with my preference but here they use the latter. Overall it was a decent option, but was missing that wok hei taste, and perhaps could've used a little more seasoning. My husband always orders their Thai fried rice with chicken ($14.50), which he said is always pretty standard. I think if you're nearby, it's a solid option, but I totally miss my other restaurant which closed. From what I can remember, I prefer Spoon and Fork in Belmont, and Chuan Chim Thai in Foster City's pad see yew more. read more

This is hard to write because the food is very good! We have been ordering from here for several years and the dishes are consistently good! However - we just ordered the green beans and the portion size was shockingly small for a dish that is $14.50. We understand that restaurant industry is under pressure but the portion size we received was barely enough for two people. Perhaps dining in is different. (This was for take out) read more

Came to Charm Thai Eatery with my friend Aric for lunch today. We had the roti with green curry (5/5) as an appeteizer and the lunch portions of yellow curry with chicken (5/5) and chicken chow mein (3/5). I thought the Roti and Yellow Curry with chicken were delicious. My friend thought his chicken chow mein was bland and created for middle america. I love Thai cuisine! So beautiful and fragrant; so delicious. My fav is Crab Fried Rice, oh sweet dawgs almighty. This lovely eatery is serving up some awesome cuisine and one of my best Thai food experiences around the Peninsula. I haven't been here before and I was craving Thai and hangry, so I sniffed around for some Crab Fried Rice and Pad Se-Ew with prawns and found this "charming" little Thai restaurant with fab reviews and photos from Yelpers, so what's a Tiff to do but dang, order it now! Loved everything I ordered and the Crispy Garlic Fish; really addicting! Lovely soft, white, juicy fish inside and sweet, burnt, crispy garlic breading on that outside. Loved it! The sweet sauce pairs well with fish and garlic. The Crab Fried Rice is filled with lovely little chunks of crab and cooked perfectly, presented with gorgeously sliced cucumbers. I really found my fav here folks. I really love this rice! The Pad Se-Ew I customized with prawns and loved it. Another fantastic entree. The big, flat noodles and bouncy shrimps were perfectly married together in holy matrimony here! I definitely want to reorder now, and the Crispy Garlic Fish is on speed dial! I think I found my Thai go-to! Please give them try. I will explore more of their menu very soon! Say it with me now...Crispy Garlic Fish! read more

Was craving Thai food and happened to stumble on this place! Note that this place is takeout only, which was a bummer for us because we wanted to dine in. We ordered the papaya salad and pad kee mao to share! Both were really great. The papaya salad was perfectly sweet, savory, and spicy! It was so refreshing on such a hot day. The pad kee mao really stood out for me. The noodles aren't overly greasy like other places, and there is an aroma of basil with every bite. Probably the best pad kee mao I've had so far!! Charm Thai definitely made a great impression on me, and I'll be returning to try other things on the menu! I just hope they'd reopen for dine-in again! read more

Always really like this place. Their food is amazing. Unfortunately, they've been putting so much water in their Thai curry that I can't really eat it anymore (most recently ordered it Friday and it tasted like nothing and I threw it away). I've never eaten there in person, but I probably DoorDash from them 30 times. It's just a bit too water down and the last meal kind of made me icked out. Honestly commenting this so maybe that they realize that they shouldn't be doing this to their food. They are Pad Thai also fantastic. Happy they're also making new locations. They have great food. They just need to work on watering down their curries because I can't even compare the consistency to soup it's basically water. Please fix this :( your my favorite place and I'd hate to try a new place read more

Charm Thai is a neighborhood Thai restaurant located in a small building right off El Camino Real in San Mateo. The cooking here was casual and rustic, and we started with the Papaya Salad, a sweet, salty, sour mixture of shredded papaya, carrots, green beans, and tomatoes, all topped with crushed peanuts and served with lettuce leaves. The Spicy Pork Salad (Yum Moo Yang) was made of grilled marinated pork shoulder mixed in a salty, sour, spicy chile-lime dressing, along with plenty of aromatics including kaffir lime leaves, red onions, and mint. For our mains, the Pad Ped Seafood was a stir-fried mixture of fish balls, prawns, calamari, mussels, fried sole fillets, onions, bell peppers, and green beans, all in a sticky, savory sauce; and the Crab Pad Thai were stir-fried rice noodles with (just a touch of) crab meat, eggs, and green onions, served with crushed peanuts, bean sprouts, carrots, and lime. The only disappointing dish was the Crispy Fish with Sweet Garlic, a house special dish of breaded, deep-fried sole fillets sautéed with a sweet garlic sauce. The breading on the sole was too thick and heavy, and the sweet garlic sauce barely added any flavor and simply made the breading lose its crispy texture. Nevertheless, this was a friendly place for a casual meal, and they seemed particularly popular for takeout orders, which could be picked up through a window at the side of the restaurant read more

I have passed this restaurant so many times and I finally came in with my family tonight. The restaurant is popular with a lot of to-go orders, so there were not many customers inside the restaurant. The waitresses were friendly and attentive. We ordered a beef pad sew, crab fried rice, chicken red curry, and crispy fish with sweet garlic sauce. The beef was very dry and the noodles were overcooked/broken. The crab fried rice was mushy. The chicken red curry had the right flavor, but it was watery. My favorite was the crispy fish with sweet garlic sauce. I wanted to like the place, but this was not my favorite meal. read more
