Shrimp "Ha Gao" Musubi | Miso Tofu Musubi | Spam Tamago Musubi
    Elaine Y.

Work was graced by the Miss Subi truck today and I was quite happy to have the opportunity to try since I had bookmarked Miss Subi for quite some time now. Looking over the menu, I gravitated towards the musubis - it is the namesake after all...! I ordered an original spam and tamago, a shrimp har gow, and a miso tofu and sweet potato. Surprisingly, I liked the original spam musubi the least! I found the egg a little too sweet for my liking. My favorite was the har gow, I thought the crispy wonton skin within the musubi was excellent! It provided a necessary crunch and paired well with the yuzu aioli. The miso tofu musubi was also a very pleasant surprise! The tofu was marinated well and I really liked the creamy bite the sweet potato provided! Prices were fair - 3 musubis and tip came to just over $20. The only thing holding Miss Subi back from a 5 star rating is the wait. I actually beat out a crowd at work and yet I had to wait almost 20 minutes for a musubi meaning I essentially had 15 minutes to hoark down lunch. I can't imagine how long my peers may have had to wait.

I am still thinking about the tofu+sweet potato Musubi I had yesterday! It was so delicious! I had heard about this truck before but wasn't sure where to find them. Happened to stumble upon them yesterday at that place at the Presidio that has a bunch of food trucks on the weekend. Would absolutely be a regular here.

Work catered in various musubis. There were spam and masago, sweet potato, ha gao, and Vietnamese inspired pork musubis. I tried ha gao and Vietnamese pork. It was very flavorful and good. If I am in the area, I would definitely get the assorted musubis and try them.

Tried Miss Subi when we had it catered for work. I got the spam and tamago misubi which was nicely packed and portion to go. I enjoyed the rice and furikake but felt like the spam and tamago lacked a bit of flavor. The spam wasn't seared well and both the spam and tamago lacked the savory sweet combo that I love in misubi. I might try another combo but it is a nice pick up to go for a small meal or or snack to share.

Musubi food truck! They also have kalua pork and chicken katsu lunch plates which I have to try next time. At first I was just craving a classic spam musubi but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has fluffy eggs in it! The spam tamago musubi has that comforting taste of spam and eggs, with a good spam to rice ratio too. My only critique is that the rice had a slightly sour sushi rice taste from what I believe is rice vinegar. I think I might just be used to plain unseasoned rice paired with spam. Although, it did work very well with the shrimp ha gao musubi. This was so good and a musubi variation I've never seen done before. The shrimp filling, crispy wonton strips, thinly sliced cucumbers, kewpie mayo and masago topping create an incredible combo of textures and flavors. Definitely a must try!

Sample box of musubis; so colorful and delicious!

Ordered a sampler box of musubi ($9.95) and each one was so delicious; I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so I guess if I ordered again, I'd have to order a whole order of each! The sampler box contained two whole musubis (4 halves); it was half each of the Spam and egg musubi, the Longanisa and Egg musubi, the Shrimp "Ha Gao" musubi, and the Vietnamese Inspired Pork musubi. Except for the Spam and Egg musubi, each one had something that added a slight tang to the taste, whether it was pickled radish, yuzu, or pickled cabbage; I loved that tanginess in the musubis. I guess because of that, those three would be my first choice, even though the plainer Spam and Egg musubi was delicious, too. I probably should have tried the plain one first! The musubis were so colorful and well presented in their little box. I can see how a whole tray of them would be a great and impressive addition to any gathering. Have to definitely keep them in mind for my next gathering. The only thing is trying to figure out if they can make them when I need them! When ordering online, the website is a little iffy as to when they'd be ready. Miss Subi doesn't have a "regular" store front. I ordered online and drove to Belmont to pick up my order. At first, I couldn't find the place. It's all closed up and there's no apparent sign to look for as you're driving on Old County Rd. You just have to put in the address and trust that your GPS will get you there! There's a sign on the door at 407A telling you to go to 407B for pick-up. When you step over to 407B, the door's locked and there are no directions telling you anything. There's a doorbell, so I just rang it and they opened up and went back in to get my order. The two women there were nice enough, so once you figure things out, it's smooth sailing. It seems that there are three businesses at that address, Miss Subi, Hongry Kong (from which I ordered a lot more items), and a bento box business whose name I don't recall. I don't know if they've always been just a to-go place, but that seems to be what they are now; I only discovered them at the beginning of the pandemic.

Encountered them at Levi Plaza and was stoked to see such a large menu of musubi choices. Every one I tried was delicious! Definitely better to load up on musubis instead of going the more boring rice bowl route. Spam & Tomago Musubi: Who doesn't love Spam & Eggs? A true classic and good baseline for the rest of your musubi exploration. Also, probably the one that keeps the best leftover, if you're getting full and a choice has to be made. Longanisa Musubi: A little departure from Spam since the longanisa has a grainier texture and a little kick. The fatty richness of it played well against the rice. However, because the texture is kinda grainy, the bite is uneven so you could end up with missing meat holes in the rice as more longanisa disappeared in the bite prior. Shrimp "Ha Gao": Like the inside of a shrimp dumpling, but in sheet form. And nice bits of crunchy fried flaky dough wrapper layered between the meat and the rice. Definitely wins for most innovative musubi I've ever had. Very memorable and very enjoyable. Huli Huli Chicken Rice: It was grilled chicken slices tossed in a sweet sauce and served over rice. It was tasty, but not as innovative or delicious as the musubis. Next time I might skip the rice bowls and try two more musubis. POG Lemonade: Very fresh and tangy, with actual passionfruit. I absolutely love passionfruit, so this was a win for me. Didn't taste the guava that strongly though, but was alright given the passionfruit levels.

Great place to get musubi in the Bay Area! Although didn't know you had to order ahead typically. They were able to accommodate me and I placed an order and waited about 10 min for it. I had the spam tamago musubi and the sweet pork sausage and egg musubi. Both were sooooo good. Would definitely come back here any time.

I found myself looking for a snack after a Filoli visit. Trusty Yelp came through for me on a Friday afternoon and I called in my order to Miss Subi. Like many small businesses these days, they operate out of a shared kitchen that you just pickup and enjoy in the car or home if you live close by. I love musubis and was sad when Hapa Musubi had closed, so I was excited to see this new alternate. Unlike Hapa that is more traditional Hawaiian musubis, Miss Subi is creative in offering an array of Asian inspired musubis that we took full advantage of. Longanisa and Egg - If you are familiar with Portuguese Sausage in the Hawaiian ones, this is similar with the Filipino Longanisa. Vietnamese Inspired Pork - this is a take on the banh mi and was surprised that I liked it more than I expected. Shrimp Ha Gao - I was disappointed with this one as it really didn't have any shrimp flavor since it was so finely grounded into the meat. Chicken Cutlet - You can't go wrong with chicken cutlet and this one had a Japanese twist with the yuzu aioli and shiso leaf. I do prefer the more traditional Hawaiian flavors in my musubis and definitely the shrimp from Hapa Musubi which has reopened recently. However I do appreciate Miss Subi's creative Asian twist on it that if I am in the area hankering for a snack, I would definitely stop by again and give that Korean one a try too.

Describe to someone a food that is made by wrapping ingredients to a block of rice with nori and that person would probably think you were describing some kind of sushi, but yet that's exactly what a musubi is. A big difference is that musubi isn't made with vinegared rice. Miss Subi is located on Old County Road in Belmont. Slow down when approaching by GPS or you might just miss it. This place is not a restaurant and there is no seating. Ring the "Ring" doorbell for service. I didn't order ahead/online as I happen to come upon the place while in the area and searching Yelp, but the lady that opened the door took a mental note of what I wanted and said to come back in 10-15 minutes. Nice! Miss Subi offers a good variety of asian fusion creations. The different varieties of musubi was good (vegan option available) and a nice spin on the traditional spam version. Ordered these to try -- *** Assorted Musubi Sampler *** 4 musubis: spam and tamago, longanisa and egg, shrimp Ha gao, and Vietnamese inspired pork (4 half sizes) $7.50 *** Chicken Cutlet Musubi *** Breaded chicken cutlet, cucumber, yuzu aioli, sandwiched between shiso rice and nori (1 full size) $3.75 *** Beef Gyudon Musubi *** Simmered Gyudon-style Beef and Onion, Mozzarella cheese, Bell Peppers, Cabbage, Pineapple between rice, wrapped in nori (1 full size) $4.00 The musubis were really fresh tasting (i.e., not sitting under a gas station heat lamp wrapped in plastic film ... pls don't ask me where I buy gas). The rice was cooked with the right amount of chew. Definitely not machine-pressed like they do at a Bay Area chain. Will have to come back and explore the menu more when I'm not in a rush and try their bowls, snacks and drinks.

Miss Subi was definitely one of the more interesting takeout options we've had over this past year; I find myself thinking about it more since that one time we ordered it a few months ago so it's probably time to go back. This place originally turned up while I was browsing Yelp so my wife got it for the family for lunch one day. The musubi are full of interesting flavors and textures, so they're really fun to look at and delicious to eat. My favorite was the shrimp one (not surprising). They've also got rice bowls, but the musubi are clearly the stars of the show. Going to put this one back on the list while we're still eating lunches at home together!

I've been part of the yelp community for a number of years but admittedly, I don't post a review too often. However, when I do post, it's often due to a spectacular experience or a lackluster experience to educate other helpers to avoid. This, as my 1 star suggests, is the latter. I arrived at Miss Subi at about 11:15AM on a Tuesday hoping to see what they had to offer. On arrival, I noticed there were no conventional entry/ordering procedure for customers. Instead, the front door was locked and a Ring doorbell camera was affixed to its right. Left if the door was a Posted flyer for Miss Subi; on it was a QR code to order via mobile. So, no t a big deal, at this point. I looked on the Square ordering platform. I must say, the items on the menu was limited to a party tray and on Misubi: KBJ beef misubi, some kind of potatoe salad and a pineapple ginger lemonade. I elected to order the only ready to eat misubi on the menu along with the only drink option. After ordering and applying payment via credit card, I received an immediate notice and an email confirming my order. The notice instructed to ring the doorbell to inform staff of my order. I t try hen did just that. I rang the doorbell but I had no one come out. I waited exactly 10minutes, hoping to give staff enough time to make the order. 10 minutes went by and nothing! I rang the doorbell again, this time, I was greeted by a staff person representing another eatery conglomerate. I was told by this person that the Miss Subi staff was on a catering event. I was so upset I had no words in response besides telling the poor girl "this is very misleading." I then tried calling the Miss Subi number (to express my disappointment and to demand a refund) but I was greeted by a voicemail box message that said it can no longer receive VM messages because the box was full. Well, at this point, I know I was too upset to provide constructive criticism via a Yelp Review. I went to the local gas station where I got myself a bag of mixed nuts and a seltzer water to collect myself. Now that I've collected myself after a less than ideal lunch, I would like to offer two recommendations: 1. Post a sign to convey you're not open for walk-ins or prevent customers from ordering via the only ordering option (Square). 2. Appoint a proxy and give him/her enough information at the shop to relay back to hungry customers. At this point, I'm no longer interested in a refund. Miss Subi can keep my $13.24 if it means they learn/adjust from my experience. I'm also attaching a photo of my confirmed order. Yelpers, I wish I could educate you on Miss Subi's food, sadly, this is just a review of how I was misled by their service and lack of planning

If you are looking for some Hawaiian inspired Vietnamese fusion this is the spot for you. Since we have all been in lockdown ordering out once in a while is great to mix it up a bit. I saw this come across on my Yelp feed as a nearby location and decided to try it out. I got the Half size party tray which is pretty much every item they have and enough to fill 2 -3 people, maybe more depending on how much you eat in one go. Ordering online was straightforward although the pickup time was far in advance. I'm not sure if it has changed but don't expect to order and pickup the same day unless you text or email ahead of time. I texted and asked for Friday pickup and was able to get it coordinated with the chef. Although I sort of wanted the meal that day it's a small business and I understand they want to make sure they have enough volume. Buying all of the separate ingredients to put on this type of meal would take me forever so waiting an extra day wasn't a big deal. As you can see from my party tray picture https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/miss-subi-belmont?select=CgVFB6eWsSv6vy5Tdf_8cQ there is a lot of stuff. 4 assorted Musubis ( 1 spam and tamago, 1 shrimp, 1 sweet pork longanisa and egg, 1 vietnamese style pork), Korean Short Ribs, Huli Huli Chicken, Garlic Shrimp, Kalua Pork or Vietnamese Inspired Pork, Yakisoba Noodles, Tobiko Ponzu Rice, Papaya Salad, Grilled Corn with Furikake, Assorted Pickled Vegetables The different varieties of Musbi was good and a nice take on the traditional spam version. I really like the tobiko topping on a couple of them. The grilled pork is like Vietnamese style pork sausage and was tasty. Tobiko rice was also a nice twist to the standard fried rice. Overall it was a good meal and came with a nice variety of items. Again make sure to text/email ahead to get your order. Don't assume same day ordering like I did although I would say it was worth the wait.

What's in the party tray? how can I order it?

How do I order the build a bowl with greens online? I only see rice and yakisoba bowls on online menu. Can I walk in and order?

You can walk in and order but it'll take a while for them to make it. They suggest call in advance to place your order. They took down online ordering since they're out operating their food truck.

How many musubis compare to a whole banh mi? Or your average number you get full from?

Hmm maybe 3-4, since they are mostly rice.

The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night but I was able to walk in at the bar. I got the ankimo pate from the seasonal menu and the wagyu steak and garlic rice. I usually looooove ankimo and I didn't really think too much about how the mascarpone would be. I think it's too heavy/creamy and lost the liver-ness of ankimo which I really like. I understand a lot of people don't though so, different strokes for different people. Not a big fan of the mixture, and there was also water or something on the bread that made it soggy. However, the pickled onions and grapes were really good especially with the wagyu steak and garlic rice. At first glance the image of the wagyu steak is not that impressive, as it was in real life as well...BUT as I took my first bite I was taken back to the underground Kobe beef bowl hole in the wall restaurant. The beef is cut into really big pieces so in this picture it doesn't look like a lot but it was a good ratio. The rice is soft and fluffy and flavorful. Worth getting the dashi. I will definitely be back!!

Lunch at Kemuri was a total win!…read more My mom and I came in for lunch because we were in the mood to try a new restaurant, and I was immediately sold when I saw oxtail udon on the menu. Say less. O R D E R E D - Oxtail Udon - Octopus Salad - Hamachi Carpaccio - Beef Tongue V E R D I C T The oxtail udon was everything I hoped for and more. The broth was incredibly flavorful -- rich and savory with just a hint of sweetness. You'd think a soup this deep would lean salty, but it was perfectly balanced. And the oxtail? Fall-off-the-bone goodness. As an oxtail lover, this absolutely hit the spot. We also ordered a few dishes to share and honestly... every single one delivered. The beef tongue was super tender and cooked perfectly. The octopus salad was fresh and well-balanced, and the hamachi carpaccio was clean, buttery, and full of flavor. Truly flavortown worthy across the board. If you're looking for a spot that does bold flavors right without being heavy, Kemuri is it. I'd 100% come back again -- and next time, I'm already eyeing that oxtail udon.

What a cute cozy dumpling & Asian fusion place in the southern most part of downtown San Carlos…read more Walked in fairly late (35ish min before closing) on a weeknight - looked like they had a busy night since none of the tables were cleaned. Though they still took another party after me 20 til closing. Got the Shrimp & Squash buns (pan fried XLB like - but not much soup) and Black Pepper Beef boiled dumplings. Loved the chewiness of the dough on the boiled dumplings and the squash was a refreshing ingredient in pan-fried dumplings. Again, not much soup inside. Will plan to revisit, especially on a colder day my perhaps after a hike at Eaton Park.

I would come back if I'm in the area, maybe to try some of the other dumpling flavors.
