One of the few home bakeries left. This place has been here for a long time. You just can't beat walking into a bakery in the morning and being greeted by the aroma of freshly baked Belfast baps and sausage rolls. A bap, for those of you from farther afield, is soft bread that is crusty at the top. The shape is hard to describe - starts at the bottom in a generally square shape which, slightly higher up, ascends into a dome shape. It's a bit like the dome at the top of the city hall, except it's not quite as big and thankfully it's not green.
Aside from that you have a whole array of buns and fresh cream cakes, which for some reason nowadays seem to be called tray bakes, pastries, and gateaus. Apple cakes are still a local favourite from here.
A cup of tea and a scone, or a sausage roll bap followed by a bun, are always in supply here and are always a welcome bundle if calling round to a relative's. Try it out if you've never been. Hopefully this long established family bakery will be able to resist the squeeze of the large retail chains and be rotting our teeth for many years to come. read more
