SmugMug is a wonderful place to operate a photo business. It is easy to set up, add content and modify later if you wish. The SmugMug "Gurus" (help and support techs) are the best I've ever seen (and I ran a tech support department with 100 techs, back in the day). Just today I had to do a complex merge of my 2 SmugMug sites. Several gurus helped and quickly achieved my goal. So much hard work on my behalf. I stand in AWE. read more

I've been with SmugMug since at least 2011. That's a lot of monthly subscription payments. Now they are forcing us to go in the chat. I have searched for a way to put in a message to a SmugMug Hero. That's been the usual procedure for years. I would describe the issue and send it to the Smugmug Heros. Today, when I press "Contact a Hero" it sends me back to. the Chat Bot. NO!!! Smugmug please email me to explain. You know my email. My name is Robert King. Thank you. read more

Smugmug ruined Flickr. I have been on the platform since 2007 in its Yahoo days. Smugmug moves in 2018, and tells all mature content posters to get pro or get out. So I purchased a two year pro membership last year. I complied with all of their guidelines and they have shadowbanned me again. Most recently today, even though my content is properly marked "restricted." They decided to change the rules without warning, and make videos prohibited. I was very angry. I cancelled my Flickr Pro membership right away. I wish I could chargeback on them for service not rendered, but that is long gone. So the moral to the story is not to purchase Flickr Pro. They won't stand by their service. read more

Tech service improved since my 1st review. However, as I'm now into it I realizing that not all the services, offerings & sizes that my chosen printing lab offers are not available to the SmugMug web site customer! Flickr not only stole my money (£111), but also killed my passion for photography I have been a member of Flickr for over 19 years (since 2004). During that period I uploaded up to 48K safe images (i.e identified by Flickr as "acceptable to a global, public audience for what would be appropriate for public viewing in any setting") into different categories (albums). Throughout this time I had so many followers. However, on 12 June 2023 the Flickr support people, (Jenny, and Olivia) took a decision to delete my entire account of images without giving me any specific reasons for their decision or prior warning. I sent emails to the help desk to find out what violations in my safe images had been discovered. Both wrote me that "They are not at liberty to discuss the specifics of accounts closed for violations", which makes it impossible for me to understand the cause of this deletion and what warranted the closing down of my account. To make matters worse, I had paid £111.84, on 18th May 2023, for a further 2 years subscription to Flickr. In the second email from the help desk, Olivia wrote to me that "Per our Terms of Use that you read and agreed to, Flickr does not provide refunds or partial refunds for unused subscription time should you close your account prematurely, or should your actions cause Flickr to terminate your account."; but as far as I remember Flickr took £111.84 from my bank account automatically without any reminder about that clause agreement. Also I should mention I do not recall ever being provided with that term of non payment clause. I tried to contact the Don MacAskill, the CEO of Flickr and SmugMug in order to ask him why Flickr help desk had deleted my entire 48K images. I wrote him via Twitter, Instagram, and Linkedin. Unfortunately I did not receive any answers from him or anybody else. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with this website? #kombizz #flickr #DonMacAskill read more

This concerns my experience with Flickr. Somehow, when SmugMug acquired Flickr in 2018, I ended up with a second account with only a few of my photos in it. It took me awhile to figure it all out, and, thanks to the excellent customer service provided by Allen, I now have my original account (with over 1,000 of my photos and videos in it), fully restored. The 2-year payment I had mistakenly paid to the wrong account has now been applied to the right account. The pictures have been removed from the second account, and it has been closed. Allen responded quickly and competently to my emails, took ownership of the problem, and expertly solved it. I hope his employer realizes what a superstar they have in him! read more

OMG don't know what the bad reviews are about. Photo sharing websites have been shuttering left and right. I've had to move from Kodak, HP Snapfish, Yahoo pictures, Phanfare, Everpix and I can't tell you how much I appreciate SmugMug's stable business model. They are family run in the heart of Silicon Valley. They have senior engineers that understand the web and photo file formats. They focus on professional photographers who squeak out a living and offer pro services you can't get anywhere else (from photo processing, RAW file storage, etc) and make it easy for a photographer to run their business. I host our schools photos - over 40k photos that we give full resolution downloads for free to parents and I only pay $65 a year. The website looks professional and I have SmugMug to thank - plus when I run into support issues I always get an email response within hours! Works great for me! read more

The worst packaging job I have ever seen for sending photos. Spent a lot of money ordering our family pictures for this to show up today. How incredibly sad. I updated this review to 3 stars because the company replaced my photos after I emailed them. read more

I host my photography business website through smugmug. When I wanted to downgrade my account, a simple email to their customer service and "voila" all is right in the world. I have found that their customer service via email is efficient and helpful. Their website's FAQ also is helpful, but sometimes it is so extensive I have found it easier to email someone at their HQ. read more

I've been a Pro SmugMug user since 2005. I have never in my life encountered a company that is amazing at what they do and at customer service as SmugMug. The SmugMug devs are constantly upgrading the experience and the features, the support heroes as they call them live up to their name nearly 24 hours a day, and the CEO and President are in a constant state of pursuing the very best in image and print display. Things keep getting better and better for everyone from the amateur like me to the professional wedding photographers like some of my friends. Maybe it isn't my place, but it looks to me like there are some misleading reviews on here. I really don't know what m'ia k. is talking about. If anything, the support heroes suggested that she try her site in IE to troubleshoot the issues she was having. That he/she didn't understand this and immediately left and felt compelled to give a bad rating speaks volumes about him/her. Warren L has some confusing things in his review as well. PNGs don't store metadata? Uh what? "Tech supports don't know how to solve issues?" I happen to have experienced some tech support from SmugMug and know that if someone doesn't know an answer (and this is rare), they have direct access to the developers who built the entire system and will often have them email you directly. "They have no backups?" What a bizarre statement. Of course they have backups: http://www.smugmug.com/photos/photo-video-backup/. If I sound defensive, I guess I probably am. SmugMug is a fantastic company that is absolutely amazing at what they do. They started from the ground up and built a world-class photo sharing service that has all the competition beat hands down. If you're wondering where to put your photos, stop wondering. I guarantee you'll be as fanatical as me and all the other folks I know on SmugMug. read more

SmugMug has been a much better fit for me than Flickr was. The one time I had to deal with a support person because I'd forgotten to update my credit card, I got a response within 20 minutes. I like that I can password-protect galleries, and I like the control you get over your gallery's appearance. I like their product enough that I've given memberships away as gifts. re:m'ia k - I've used the site with Firefox, Safari and Chrome and never had a problem. re:Warren L - of course the slideshows only support PNG and JPEG - that's what browsers support. If you want to use raw, you're going to have to export to jpeg before you upload. read more

I've been a customer for several years now and with respect to other services I've tried, SmugMug is leaps and bounds better than any of the "free" services, Zenfolio and so on. As only a firefox user (sometimes Safari and rarely IE), I find the tools work well. Sending email to the help desk (help@smugmug.com) almost always results in a fairly quick response. Sure, there are some great FAQ's but I'm too lazy for that. Want a print? No problem. Several vendors to choose from and even better, SmugMug guarantees you'll be happy or they'll do it again. Even if I screw up. Sure, it costs money. But the service is worth it. Not to mention I don't feel like a spam dumpster or am I inundated with advertising every time I visit the site. To be sure, there are a couple of warts here and there but a quick email almost always solves the problem. Count me as a very satisfied customer. read more

First off: Hey idiots at yelp: let SmugMug get a business account or whatever it is called so they can respond back. Completely not fair that you allow them to be reviewed but no response. As far as service: They are worth the money. Great service. Great product. Only complaint and reason for lack of five stars: No easy way to for owner to download multiple photos/galleries. Sure, there are a host of scripts I could write or third party apps I could download...but shouldn't this simple functionality be baked right into the product? read more

Been using SmugMug to backup all of my photos and videos for over 5 years now and in my opinion, it is miles above every other service like Flikr, Picasa and whatever others are out there. Their rates are cheap, their uptime and reliability are incredible and their support team very responsive and quick. And when I say quick, I mean that I had a response in under 15 minutes both time I've contacted them. The website's interface is very clean, simple and yet very effective and highly customizable. And the unlimited storage is also an incredible addition. I have over 4,000 pictures worth almost 8GB on there and can easily share them with the friends and family. The uploaders available are numerous and Smugmug is compatible with a ton of services from the iPhone to Lightroom, iPhoto and Aperture, just to name a few. Overall I can't think of any negative things about it. Honestly, if you're considering online photo storage, SmugMug is the way to go. If you don't believe me and the other reviews, you can always try a free trial to get your own opinion but honestly, just go for it and thank me later... read more

OH NOOOOOOOOOOO way. I tried. I seriously tried. I thought I would switch over to Smugmug since it has nice little features like different layouts, password protection, uploading without using an uploader tool..... BUT NO. Y'see, I am a dedicated Firefox user. I DO NOT use Explorer. It's just one of those things. I just prefer Firefox, and when it comes to computer stuff, I'm a bit stubborn and I know what I like, and I don't like change. I'm not smart enough with computers to adapt to change. A few months ago, I noticed that my smugmug albums would appear with a few photos missing on the left hand side when viewing it on firefox. It was very strange. I emailed tech support (which promptly responded within a day,) but they told me to look at the site using MS Explorer. Hmm.. well.. y'see.... that's not really the answer to my question, so...... Anyway, turns out there is (and was) a glitch where the site doesn't like to upload some images if it's viewed on Firefox. Blah blah techie blah blah it's not really our fault blah blah...... was their response. Bottom line? They said I should use Explorer for smugmug. Hmmmmmm... what did I just say up there about using Explorer and change??? Just now I got an email reminding me to update my credit card info so they can charge me the astronomical $60 / year fee for their CRAP-tastic service, and I send them a piece of my mind. I spent the good part of last night/ the wee hours of this morning spending a few HOURS backing up all my photos from Smugmug onto my laptop.... and that process took FOREVER too, since the images didn't appear on the left side, i had to right click, save as image.... blah blah..... when there is an actual ICON that exists for 'save as owner' but it doesn't work! WTH!!!! For a site that charges the astronomical fees they do, you'd think they'd have a better interface. but they DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stick with Flickr.... now that they have a Guest Pass feature, I'm a BIG fan of Flickr. Plus, give a membership as a gift, and get an extra month on your own subscription free! yaay! AVOID at all costs. read more

I can't see enough good about Smugmug. I've been with them since 2004. They make my pics look great! Pros: - Customization - Unlimited space - "Family friendly" - Speedy uploads - New additions and features all the time - An awesome forum of SmugMug friends (Dgrin) - Fun photo communities - Did I say customization? - Easy sales of my prints. Different print suppliers. - Password protected galleries - Super people running the company! And you can actually talk to them! - Just plain "the best" Cons: - none really come to mind. Sure there is a cost, but I'm happy to pay for great service. smugmug site: cspics.com read more

I tried to add more to my old review (or should I say RANT) but got a popup saying, basically, they can only handle 5001 characters of my bitching about smugmug at a time.... so I had to write an "update" instead of an edit. I supposed it's my bad, for not taking the time to do the research to find a better photo sharing site. But they charged me, after I specifically told customer service to NOT charge my credit card again, I'm trying to cancel my membership. Since I was already charged, I decided to just go ahead and use them today when I needed to share several folders full of photos, with people whose portraits I've taken over the last few weeks. My poor husband has had to listen to me grumbling expletives for the last hour, "are you f___ing kidding??" "what... the... f____".... "Omg... you CANT be serious..." Things that are somehow made SO simple and easy by every other photosharing site I've ever used... Flickr, Google Photos, Costco Photos, Shutterfly... even Snapfish and Picasa (which I'm not even a fan of)... seem like a piece of cake compared to SmugMug. In one instance of dragging and dropping (or attempting it) on a screen that told me to go ahead and drag and drop right there, I attempted to drag and drop a few dozen highlighted photos from another window..... and for some reason JUST ONE photo appeared. Sideways. So I did it again. Same thing. I'm embarrassed to admit I did it a third time but I was just in disbelief that something so simple could get so screwed up by such an expensive photo sharing site. No offense to high school kids but... sometimes I find myself thinking, was this site scrapped together by some kid in the 10th grade and they are still working out the kinks, but somehow getting away with charging people almost $200 a year? When I finally was able to successfully upload a few dozen pics from a different folder, onto the site, I found that half of them were turned back to their original position (sideways), before I had rotated them in Windows. That was when I said, "You've GOT to be F___ing KIDDING!!!" Don't even get me started on the fact that it was way too complicated to rotate them back to the proper position in SmugMug. The thought of having to rotate roughly 50% of all the photos I still have to download, because SmugMug doesn't have the simple capability to figure out that they were already roated in Windows, makes my skin crawl. REALLY, SmugMug? Totally FREE sites like Shutterfly, Costco, Picasa, Flickr, Google Photos, Picasa, Snapfish can all figure it out, and you can't??? I wanted to make sure that all my photos are secure and private, but somehow this has made it just about impossible to share any of these photos with the people who are IN the photos. Or at least, it is taking me way too long to figure it out. Again... it's my own damn fault for even attempting to use Smug Mug again. Like I said, I am just doing it because I already PAID for it (albeit unwillingly) after I specifically sent emails to customer service asking them to NOT renew my membership... and they charged me anyway. I'm going to stop now before I max out yet another 5,000 characters bitching about SmugMug! read more

I joined Smugmug in 2005 when I had my first daughter. Our purpose for it was to share our pictures with our family and friends that are sprinkled throughout the world. And what a fantastic site it's been! My favorite thing about Smugmug is its ease of use. It is user friendly and provides excellent FAQ advice. For the rare times that I was not able to find my answers on their site, I received a quick response from a friendly, knowledgeable help person. In fact, at about 2am one night, I was looking at my photos through tired, blurry eyes and could not find my pictures from my Sweden trip for the life of me. I frantically emailed Smugmug and quickly received a response with a link to my gallery. It was there all along. Im sure the help guy thought I was a freak, but his response didn't lead on to that. :) They go above and beyond in customer service. Also, I love that I can choose a huge bulk of pictures and in one click, drag them over to Smugmug - in one click, 75+ photos are being uploaded in record time. I also like that I have the option of making certain photos and/or galleries viewable only by me or password protected for those who I OK giving privileges to. Photos are unlimited; as Im sure I have well over 5000 now in my account. Also, they are connected with Blurb - so creating a photo book is not only convenient, but super easy. I plan on being a Smugmug member for years to come. read more

An appalling company to deal with, if anything goes wrong they simply don't reply. I have put email requests into their 'heroes' (antiheroes more like), they have incorrectly charged me £282.20 this year and taken payments from an expired card (unable to get back through my bank, who are now aware and will prevent any future payments being taken). Buyer beware, if you cancel your account with Smugmug, be careful to also cancel your payment method, even if it is already expired. Disgraceful, unethical, unprofessional, dishonest in my view. I recommend you avoid. If anyone from Smugmug sees this review, and finally feels like contacting me, please call me on UK 441904479063. They hide their telephone numbers, I now see why. They don't reply to email contact requests, sadly there is no other way to deal with them. read more

BEWARE! Smugmug falsely identifies duplicates and permanently deletes them if you click "Replace" Smugmug permanently lost photos of my children in a show. I took a group of photos and uploaded them. Less than a week later, I tried to upload a semi-professional's photos of the show. But when I tried to upload them, the site refused them, saying they were "duplicates." Believing that was true, I clicked "Replace." But when I checked, my original, unbacked-up photos, were gone! Smugmug revealed that the photos they label as "duplicates" are NOT duplicates at all - they are simply photos with the same number. And worse, Smugmug does not retain backup files - does not even create them - SO WHEN YOU CLICK "REPLACE" YOU PERMANENTLY DELETE YOUR PRECIOUS ORIGINAL PHOTOS. SMUGMUG DOES NOT RETAIN ANY BACKUP COPIES OF YOUR PHOTOS - SO IT CANNOT RECOVER THE REPLACED PHOTO. Ironically, Smugmug does have some way to recover photos that are DELIBERATELY deleted - but for whatever reason, it has no way to recover photos that end up getting over-written by its false information about duplicates. Smugmug needs to fix this serious error before more people lose their photos. It needs to invest in REAL duplicate image identification (free on web), immediately add warnings or simply remove the "Replace" option, and start backing up files on a server, so that they can be recovered. read more

Back in November 2017 I was directed to SmugMug through a photographer I used, all started off well, but I need some prints ASAP for an event. I placed an order and paid for next day shipping. Needless to say the prints did not arrive next day, they actually showed up the day after. Now to be fair SmugMug did ship in time for the next day delivery to work, the delay was all on the carrier. But when I contacted Smug's customer service and ask for a refund on the shipping cost, which were actually more expensive than the print order, after a couple not so friendly emails I was offered a fraction of the cost back. Fast forward to today and at least 3 more emails I have yet to recieve the promised refund. Very disappointing since the next day shipment only had to travel 20 miles from SmugMug to the shipping address. We could have driven to pick up the prints for a fraction of the price and time!!!! Pros Accept Paypal, Paying is easy (getting back is not; see cons). Message sounds like friendly (but depends) Cons Web download gives a whole gallery of many photos (but not a photo chosen--this is very hard to know until I receive it). I chose several from a single gallery and got overcharged. It is very hard to get the money back. User-unfriendly. Explanation is missing, Hard to know until I pay and get it. Photo-print may be easier. I purchased some photos from this site. To choose each photo I had to go over 50 to 100 photos from each gallery back and forth. There is no number or anything. Then I changed my mind to get electronic files. There is no way to go from the photo I chose to electronic file option. I had to delete the photos in the cart and then go the photo gallery once again (It is very confusing, but you will know what I mean when you go there). The choose web download, because it is the only option available. I chose some photos from the same gallery--and I get overcharged for a single gallery (see above). Web download means download of the whole gallery. If you have to order from the site, I would recommend to order a little by little, so you know what you are ordering. read more

been with them 5 years. Great customer service and the platform suits my needs. With my latest situation, SmugMug failed to let me talk with anyone. The links and videos I was referred to (and I waded into) were hours of material. I had twenty minutes to make big decisions. i've been a smugmug user pretty much since the beginning. disclaimer: when i was at sun microsystems, smugmug was a customer, i no longer have a business relationship with them, but love their services even more now. what's to like: - you don't have to pimp your friends' and family's privacy or personal information just to share pictures! you get a vanity website, and can parcel out vanity URLs to your albums! - easy, fast and intuitive uploader. works great on a variety of bandwidth links - options to keep galleries hidden or password protected, wonderful if you're taking photos with kids in them and don't want to publish other peoples' kids' pix. - prints are outstanding quality, very competitive cost wise, and delivered quickly. i have been taking sideline photos at high school football games for three years. i typically take 600M-4Gbytes of pictures in a single afternoon. by dinnertime, they're uploaded to smugmug and i share the link with the team; by the next day i see those pictures show up as facebook profile shots. that's the whole point of taking team photos, and smugmug makes it easy, gives me enough capacity to not have to worry about editing out the marginal pictures, and i'm not asking students to create more logins (and support headaches) just to see themselves. i like having my photos stored in the cloud. i still have boxes of negatives in my basement, and that worries me. i like being able to ask my parents "what pictures do you like" and then have prints drop-shipped to them. i like the cropping and editing tools -- simple, fast and for the photoshop or gimp phobic (ie, me) they do what they need to do, without requiring 700 pages of manuals and a degree from RISD. read more

Customer service: they get back to you soooo quickly (and personally and effectively) that it is awe inspiring; i think other companies should look to them for a successful business model. Ok, uploading can be time consuming - but protecting my priceless memories is worth the wait! Like I tell all my family and friends, yes, it costs money to store your photos with them but they are soooo worth it and i could not recommend them any more than i do!
