I've been here twice now for Brazilians with Mary. The first time I was blown away. She was easy and fun to talk to, plus she waxed me quickly which I really appreciated. When I got home I saw that there were a few stray hairs remaining but wasn't too concerned because I knew it had been a while since my last wax and the waiver you sign before your appointment warns you of possibly having stray hairs afterwards. One month later, my second experience was completely different. I requested that she only use hard wax because soft wax irritates my skin. Mary attempted to wax me as requested but the salon's hard wax isn't effective and didn't pick up any hair. I had to use the soft wax for the entire appointment and it was painful and caused irritation as it always does. Also, once I got home from the salon I noticed one section of my "area" looked like it hadn't even been touched..... I have been to waxing salons half the price of Smooth that never leave any hair behind (not even strays) and I never had a problem with their hard wax picking up hair. I've only been once so far, but it was an amazing experience! I went in for a full Brazilian wax, which I've never had before. I was initially super nervous, but Cat, my esthetician, explained exactly how the process would be. I loved that she talked me though the entire thing and asked me questions as to distract me from the pain. She was very thorough and even went so far as to tweeze some ingrown hairs for me! This is the second time I've walked into this store with every intention to make a purchase, only to be completely ignored by their staff. The first time was a couple of weeks ago when I came in looking for an engagement gift. I visited again today around 1pm searching for 3-4 items to include in a client gift basket. There were 2 associates on duty and only one other customer who was already at the register purchasing her items. I did a complete 360 degree stroll around the store, stopping to read greeting cards and sample some creams and oils. I walked right past the register where both associates were standing - one was facing me and the other had her back completely turned. Neither said Hello or even acknowledged my presence whatsoever. At that point I decided to take my business elsewhere. If I'm going to be spending a substantial amount of corporate dollars, I'd like for them to go to a store that values my business. I purchased items from Origins and Mat Hatter Studio instead :) A word of advice to management - see the value in every shopper that walks though your door and train your employees to make the most of every customer interaction. read more

How do you review this place without being totally TMI? It's across the street from Dillard's at MacArthur in an unassuming building. And it's extremely tiny inside. Three rooms! I was able to listen to a whole conversation between a customer and esthetician while she got her service done behind closed doors. But they're currently expanding. They're becoming popular. It's pretty well-deserved. They do excellent work. I read all the reviews about how seamless waxes are here so I was waiting for my mind to be blown. (I have a low threshold for pain.) Well it didn't hurt as much as the others; I'll give them that. The esthetician was skilled, personable and cool. I visited the Newport News location and it is very nice. I was very nervous today because I've never gotten anything but my eyebrows waxed. I was extremely worried about being overweight and I have multiple other modesty issues. I got myself so worked up and worried that I tried to cancel about 1 hour before the appointment. The 12 hour cancellation policy made me suck it up and go anyway and I am so glad I did. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful (or as wonderful as it could possibly be). The lady at the front desk was friendly and instantly put me at ease. Laura took care of the waxing and she was phenomenal. Not only was she an absolute professional, but she explained what was going to happen. Now, it does hurt, but it is only for a couple of seconds afterwards each strip and then things are back to normal. They use soft wax and hard wax. Still don't understand the difference except for the hard wax seemed a little more forgiving. :-) You will have to check your modesty at the door if you are deforesting the Garden of Eden......there is really not much else I can say about that except Laura really made the situation comfortable and it felt like no big deal. I'm new to the area and needed to find a good place to get a Brazilian wax asap! I decided to try Smooth based on all the great Yelp reviews. I booked with Heather. She did an amazing job! She used the hard wax instead of the soft wax and strips. I had never experienced this technique before, unfortunately! It was so much better than any of my previous Brazilians! It did take longer, but was totally worth it. The lady I booked with over the phone was not very friendly, but the service and friendliness of Heather made it totally ok. I've been to Smooth four times now -- I HIGHLY recommend this salon for waxing. It's absolutely adorable, clean, and the ladies working there are professionally top-notch (and friendly!). My first two visits were with the same gal. First was for facial waxing; I was not pleased. She tore an eyelid and my chin. Thankfully, I had come a few days earlier than my event and both were healed by the time I needed them to be. Second was for a facial the next day (and no comment was made about the tearing; it was pretty obvious); way too much time spent rubbing my forehead than applying and extracting, in my opinion. I would not return for another facial. I loved the salon and wanted to give it a second chance -- when I got the email for the Brazilian wax pass (best.deal.ever!) I jumped on it and chose another gal to see. Super glad that I did! =) I've seen Tiffany twice now for Brazilian waxes -- one a month for the last two months on the wax pass. I've seen some women on here post how the waxes they are having at Smooth are "painless" .. I'm here to tell you that there is no such thing as a painless Brazilian; however, I will also tell you that the technique that Tiffany is using makes her waxes the LEAST painful I've ever had (and I've had a lot). This is the only place I go for waxing. Smooth has a clean, cozy, and welcoming environment. Soothing music, calming fragrances, and a feeling of serenity are a big part of the appeal here. Because the setting is so tranquil, it actually feels like I'm at a spa in spite of the fact that waxing is not terribly relaxing. (I suppose when you have two kids, any time away feels like "me time!") I can't say enough good things about Nicki--she is warm, kind, and an expert at doing a gentle wax. She can answer all your questions and make you feel comfortable with the waxing process. Smooth also has online booking (works great for me because I do everything online these days). Very convenient. I really like the location--Downtown Norfolk is close to my home, but it's easy to get to from the surrounding areas via I-264 thanks to the direct routes that lead into the heart of the city. Be sure to leave yourself a few minutes for parking. I was fortunate to find metered parking right outside the building but it's a little pricey and I was worried that I'd run out of time and be towed--think I'll go with a garage next time. I was able to get an appointment through the site for a mani pedi at VIP nail salon next door (which by the way, was fantastic) with my appointment at smooth following. The level of service you receive from the second you walk in, until you've payed and are on your way is great. There is no wait time. Everything was quick, but not rushed, comfortable and painless (painless even throughout and after a Brazilian wax! Impressive. ) Tiffany was my waxer - she was sweet, friendly, and a master of her craft (she obviously knew what she was doing which is comforting in this situation especially.. nothing like a bad wax. ) She even listened to me run my mouth the entire time which kept me completely distracted. I really wanted to like this place. The staff is really friendly, the environment is clean and relaxing... it's a really cute spot. But beware if you have sensitive skin. They use their own proprietary wax blend. I've been to lots of different waxing places in many different cities and I've never had such a bad reaction to anyone else's wax. My first wax I experienced some irritation, but I assumed it was because it was my first wax in over six months. But my second wax was just as bad, if not worse. My skin was red and blotchy and peeling for a week. I won't be returning for this service. The most frustrating part is that I spent $40 on a membership that I now won't use. The "Save $10 if you return within 4 weeks" discount only applies if it's exactly 4 weeks. I tried to make my appointment exactly 4 weeks after my first wax, and they weren't available, so they booked me 2 days later. It wasn't until the day of service that I was told that the discount wouldn't apply. So I purchased a membership to get the discount, which now turned out to be a waste of $40. I wish I could use it for a lash tinting discount, since I probably will return for that service, but it's only good for discounts on Brazilians and facials. Oh well :-\ read more

Not sure what happened, but I'll happily be paying another visit around my 3rd-4th week anyway. Yay, another repetitive customer! My esthetician made sure to keep me in the loop about what she was doing and whether certain areas were known to hurt more. I was also having trouble with directions, and they were extremely helpful in assisting me with finding my way.
