Smooth Monkey is my go-to smoothie place in the neighborhood. The staff is always friendly and they have an expansive menu. I'll often pop in to place my order, pop out to pick up some items from Nova's or the Farmer's Market, and swing back by to pick up my drink(s) on the way back home. We come around 10:30am on a busy Sunday morning and waited about 10 minutes to place our order. The owner was very nice and attentive despite a busy shop. Everything was hand selected out of containers, not pre-mixed and I really appreciated that. I opted for the chocolate peanut butter cup smoothie with vanilla whey protein powder and almond milk. It was delicious. My husband opted for the small banana bowl and he enjoyed it as well. I visited Smooth Monkey on Sunday, March 19th. I got the peanut butter cup and my girlfriend got the peach mango. The two men working were incredibly personable, which is something you see less and less of now a days. As far as the product goes, I was impressed by their commitment to avoid using ice, syrup or sugar, unlike other smoothie bars - especially chains. To me, using those 3 ingredients mentioned is cheating. The flavor was strong and was not watered down and the consistency was on point. None of the employees wear masks! And the owner had the audacity to bully me for wearing one. I ignored him as I have lost two family members to COVID, and then he physically touched me which felt wildly uncomfortable. The owner is very obnoxious, rude and it was uncomfortable seeing how he treated not only me as a guest but his employees as well. This place it is all the health rage. They have a ton of healthy items. The acai bowls or smoothies you can't go wrong. They have their core menu items but you can also build your own. I wish they had a little more acai to the rest of the items however it was still tasty. I did enjoy that it was all fresh ingredients which is why they are a little more pricey then some other places. read more

I'm going to start with the positive! Friendly service. Quality ingredients (the fruit on my bowl tasted SO GOOD and fresh). Add ons are reasonably priced. Overall good vibe. Granola is yummy. Love the local honey and my smoothie was delicious (not too sweet, good balance of ingredient flavors) The downfall? The açaí. I've had many an açaí bowl from all over the country. The good. The bad. The mediocre. This falls under the latter. It is pre blended and then frozen again, causing it to be chunky and full of ice flakes and a bit of juice separation instead of blended and and smooth. Even popping this in the blender before scooping a couple ice cream spoons full from a big container would have made a huge difference. read more

Smooth Monkey is trying to fill a much-needed void in Plaza Midwood: a health food spot, specifically with smoothies. I was excited to see their range and what they had to offer. A few key points: -They have a decent variety of creative smoothies and you always have the option to build your own -They have a wide variety of milks (plenty of vegan options) -They are (unsurprisingly) overpriced, especially the acai bowls, which are pretty tiny -Their smoothies are actually a decent size and the employee who made mine definitely made it thick enough without any direct specifications on my part -They don't appear to have any vegan protein powder and only have two types of very generic whey protein, vanilla and chocolate -It looks like they keep the signature smoothie ingredients in individual plastic bags, which is good for organizational purposes but horribly wasteful -I've heard concerns about employees not wearing plastic gloves while preparing smoothies (I didn't notice this during my visit) -It takes a long time to prepare a smoothie, but that has been my experience in any juice/smoothie shop -The shop looks pretty disheveled - they have all of their ingredients out on a shelf, which is fine, but it could be more organized (probably a result of them being newly opened) Overall - decent start. It will be interesting to see their presence take hold in Plaza. I hope their menu expands/evolves with time and they bring in more protein options! read more
