I went here to try poutine for the first time and I'd say it was pretty solid. The food was good, a little salty, but I've never really tried other poutine so I have no idea if that's how it's supposed to taste. The dude at the register seemed really tired and was very unenthusiastic but I guess that's fine. The place was very quiet and not busy so it was nice.

Great food and location. Servers were decent...the happy hour specials on beer and oysters were great.

Solid option for a step above takeout poutine. Not really a sit down restaurant although tables are available.

It is from a box and you can either buy the packaged box to go or eat one of their ready and heated empanadas. For $4, it was tiny and although tasty, the filling is barely existing. I chose beef and there was barely any meat, mostly just dough. Although understandable this isnt made by the store on site, but rather from a packaged box, sold in fours, and not sure of the cost of that, but hopefully its not 4 x $4 = $16, as it would definitely be a rip. The savoury pastry gets 2 stars from me plus 1 for the nice lady serving the empanada and allowing me to use card to pay. If you want a SMALL snack and really like dough, then maybe try this.

We asked if we can get an empanada and she said you have to pay inside. We went inside, paid, and were directed back to the empanada stand by the gentleman behind the cashier. The lady was not back at the empanada stand so we patiently waited for an empanada (there were no other customers at the time). After a few moments, another couple walked in, bought an empanada through the same gentleman, to whom the gentleman then escorted back and served an empanada. We were already taken aback by what happened. However, expected him to then serve us, he removed his glove and proceeded to walk back to the cashier. We had to stop him and ask if he was going to serve us...

The number of vendors is enormous and the choice of meats - beef, chicken, pork, fish, lamb, you name it they have it. They had food stalls that had 50 person line ups. Lots of great reviews on the web for a number of these places and it didn't matter what you were looking for - fruits, veggies, bread, seafood, sandwiches, soups, homemade pasta..... if it isn't here it hasn't been invented or you don't need it. We loved this place. I wish Ottawa could support something like this.

Definitely something for everyone. I'd recommend coming here hungry so you can try a variety of different food. The atmosphere itself is definitely crowded!! This is a mix of a local spot and touristy spot. Which brings me to the downside. There isn't enough seating available, so you will most likely have to stand to eat your grub. I feel with all the amazing food vendors and offerings, having more seating areas would make the experience much more comfortable.

I was totally misled about this place. I went for a specific Indian rice. If you google types of…read morerice India produces, it will tell you that while India has 6,000 types of between 30 and 50 are commonly used. I asked for my rice and was told they carry one type - basmati, while basmati rice is lovely; it is as common as muck - you can buy it EVERYWHERE. I believed they were a rice specialty place and would have a lovely selection. Wrong. Why would you carry only one rice that is available in every supermarket regardless of size? I was completely mislead about this place and their selection of rice. The person there could care less about my enquiry. It is highly unlikely I will pursue shopping there in the future. There is simply no need to frequent a place with an indifferent attitude and a poor or shall I say in this case, non-existent selection.

You won't find any country bumpkins here!…read more Rube's Rice was named for its late, great founder Rubin "Rice-Man" Marcus, whose shop in the downstairs of St. Lawrence Market has been a Toronto mainstay for four decades. It's been around so long, Rube's -- which now inhabits both a center island and a side shop in that basement -- once was the first and only shop downstairs. Rube's Rice boasts more than 50 varieties of the "World's Most Popular Food": Arborio, Basmati, Jade, Wehani, Kokuho, Saskatchewan wild, Sweet Short, Parboiled, Lundburg, Bamboo-infused, and Forbidden (aka Black) Rice are just a few options. Despite its name, Rube's isn't only rice, stocking a large variety of pastas, cereals, grains, flours, peas, chickpeas, beans, lentils, cereals, couscous, trail mixes, herbs & spices, dried fruits, and a whole bunch of quinoa varieties. If you have dietary restrictions, Rube's is known for their gluten-free pastas, products for those with allergies, and a bounty of organic brands. Rube's Rice's prices are a little high IMHO, but the quality and variety are AMAZING! A lot of people demonize rice in this keto-infested day-and-age, but Rube lived 92 years selling and eating that food he loved so much. If you love countless varieties rice, Rube's is very, very nice!

Because of its location, it's easy to miss if you don't walk all the way to the back corner at the lower level. They sell a lot of Ukrainian grocery items, along with ready-to-meat hot food items such as cabbage rolls, latkes, and cutlets (they even have fish and vegetarian ones). There is also a Ukrainian version of veggie burger that is okay (pretty big size, made of all plant ingredients). They sell some sweet items as well. The owner is very friendly.

The Ukrainian sausage lady kept pushing the potato latkes on sarah l. and me but we refused. I opted instead for a container of beet salad and some garlicky half-sour pickles that I fished out of the brine. You'll also see other Ukrainian specialties like cabbage rolls, head cheese, breads, and desserts. Most of the stuff is sold by weight so if you're clueless about weight estimation like I am, you could easily spend $14 without really meaning to. But I just had more of the kobassa (with Kozlik's triple crunch mustard!) and the pickles for lunch. Mmm...It was money well spent.
