Shakers was great, I stopped by for a cigar and really enjoyed my visit…read more The building itself has such a fascinating, albeit largely morbid history - from its time as a brothel, an Al Capone connection, and of course a modern tie-in to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (the owner allegedly saved the stool Dahmer used to sit on), this place does NOT have a bright past. Fast forward to today, and the dreadful history didn't bring down my experience. They have an okay cigar collection near the host stand, and a great space to smoke/relax. There's a range of seating, from an outdoor patio, to tables near the front windows, to a bar, to more dimly lit seating toward the back...and a rooftop to boot. Lots of options! Their drink menu seemed extensive, lots of spirits and beer/wine available. Pricey, but I guess that's part of being a cigar bar, especially one that's also storied institution. Service was excellent, great staff that were friendly and very helpful. If you like cigars and don't mind a smaller selection, this place is an excellent option for a low key place to smoke and unwind.

For obvious reasons, it's a Milwaukee staple. Yes, be prepared to smell like smoke when you leave here, because it is true to the name: a cigar bar. They're sold and smoked inside, and it's clear they have a following for just that. But there's more to this place, for the non-smokers like myself. A full bar of cocktails, brews, and wines. A large menu, which seemed to me like it had a lot of New Orleans style options, plus exotic seafood and game dishes. There are multiple stories of the building, each funky and dressed up in their own way. You'll find live music, ghost tours (it's haunted), decor from decades past, and even a rooftop looking over the city. I've yet to eat here but on a recent visit came for the infamous tour. Our guide was so great and led us from detailing the notable exterior parts of the building, through the basement, and each floor up from there. You'll have to visit yourself to uncover all of the stories and haunted history. Our group also grabbed drinks from the bar (which you can bring with you on tour). I had the gin martini - my favorite cocktail of all time - but asked the bartender to put it over ice, make it dirty, and add a twist. She returned with it made to perfection. Others has old fashioneds and wine, and it all went down a treat. It's probably not for everyone, but if you're looking for an ~experience~ then Shaker's is certainly worth a visit.

I spoke with an employee named Josh and asked a few simple questions about their inventory and what the most expensive cigars they carried were. When I asked if they had anything over $100, Josh responded with, "I can charge you however much you want," and then told me that if anyone pays over $100 for a cigar, they're getting ripped off. I clarified that I hadn't bought anything yet and was simply asking questions because I was unfamiliar with cigars and wanted to get something high-end as a gift. I told him I'd stop by later that afternoon, and when I arrived, I was greeted and went into the humidor to browse. While I was looking around, I overheard Josh at the desk laughing about our phone conversation and mocking me to his friends, saying I got ripped off and making fun of the questions I had asked. As someone who was genuinely trying to learn and was fully prepared to spend good money on gifts, being publicly mocked for asking beginner questions was honestly shocking and extremely unprofessional. I was immediately greeted by Rose, who I asked to just let me stand there and take in the environment for 30 seconds. She laughed, but I think she got the nostalgic factors I was feeling. The shop is straight up old school, with leather couches, chairs, etc around for various smoking areas, and they were definitely being utilized on this Friday afternoon. I've already decided that I will be returning to partake in "enjoy(ing a) fine cigar + (and maybe) quality liquors in the comfort of your living room" in their gorgeous lounge. Now, we'll get to the nuts of the review, as Rose asked me what she could do for me and I said straight up that I was looking for a recommendation because I'm not really able to do that at local corporate tobacco shops as I am generally more knowledgeable than the workers. She immediately thanked me for just immediately trusting her judgment* and said, "Well, lets go where all the fun is." We entered the EXTREMELY well stocked humidor and I explained to Rose exactly what I wanted and a price range (that wasn't very limiting) and she IMMEDIATELY said "This is the cigar you want." Well, it was celebratory cigar that I smoked that day, and she was right. *In hindsight, after a little research, I appreciate Rose's humility as she's an ambassador for multiple cigar brands, and she actually DID NOT recommend one of her ambassadorial brands which is a real positive (and inspires me to try some brands that trust her). Though I have a feeling I may be a bit out there personality-wise for a lot of traditional cigar stores I hope to come back and spend some time in this beautiful establishment.

I was planning on only getting a couple of cigars for myself and a friend, but there was an excellent buy three, get one free deal that could not be passed up. The deal covered a number of different labels, including Cohibas and Macanudos. You don't run into specials like that very often, so you take them when they present themselves. Four Cohibas and a Short Story later I headed out. The proprietor was nice enough to throw in a cutter gratis.
