I visit Brevard quite often for mini vacays. This has become a regular for us. I was hesitant years ago because it is just a drive thru and I had to wait out on the road in the turn lane because they were busy. But not to worry, they move fast. And the service is quite good. They have made special requests for me over and over without any fuss at all. First thing I try at BBQ joints is sides and then work my way up to the meats. Admittedly I stick to the fries. Great battery fry with crunch and I add a side of fry sauce. An awesome onion aoli. Brisket has a great smoke flavor, ribs are uniform and fall off the bone with a mild bite and pre sauced. I'm picky with BBQ sauce and I will say the sweet is a bit too sweet and overpowers the meat. So I get the mustard based one, which is delicious and not too vinegary. My wife always gets the pimento sandwich and adds brisket. Only thing that would make it better is instead of white bread, they used Texas Toast. read more

This past Friday was the first time we tried the Pig Wings; they were awesome. And this was the first time we had an error on our order - they forgot our basket of fries! When I got home, I was a little bit devastated (love those fries), but figured it wasn't worth the drive back and it wasn't worth contacting them to complain. No big deal. Guess what? We've gotten takeout bbq there a number of times. While convenient and mostly friendly service, the chicken is incredibly dry every time and sometimes inedible so at this point we've given up. Pulled pork is ok, but definitely not 4.9 stars worthy. I know it's on the market. I wish someone would buy it and turn it into a Haywood BbQ out of Dillsboro /Franklin or Noble Smoke in CLT that are really good so we could have an easy dinner option when kids are so tired we just want to be home and not in a restaurant. read more

If I lived closer, this would be my regular bbq spot, got to try pork, ribs, burnt ends and brisket. The brisket was a little lean but tender compared to the last time but still way better than most Nc cue. Burnt ends were Jack stack from kc full on or joes gas station. Sauces were spot on, the mustard sauce super good too. Sides cheesy corn is essential, and the collards were some of the most decadent and smoked flavored I've tasted. I didn't try the slaw or fries they come with, but they gladly substituted. Also shout out for some creative tacos and non traditional uses of bbq meat such as a daily taco special. Service was 11/10, super friendly and helpful and faster than any fast food restaurant I've seen in years. If I remade the world, I would move the McDonald's line here just to help support this fantastic creative local business. We drove 40 minutes to try this drive thru BBQ joint and we were not disappointed. The ribs were perfectly smoked, tender and fall off the bone with great flavor - some of the best we have had. The pulled pork was also excellent with great smoke flavor. The brisket, we were a little disappointed with as it was a little dry - but I am not going to harp on this because brisket is very hard to get right consistently. Honestly I have only have great brisket once in Asheville but the next time I went back it was dry. The fries were great as were the sauces - but note that this BBQ does not need sauce - great flavor on its own. I love the fact that they come dry (either sauce on the side) as I love to taste the BBQ and not a sweet sauce. With this said, sauces were excellent for the pulled pork sandwich. I particularly enjoyed the mustard sauce. Back to the ends - perfectly rendered! Even the picture does not do it justice. So good it would be cardiologist approved. We were stopping in Brevard to stay the night, and found Smoke-On on Yelp. Every review said to get brisket or the ribs. So that's what we planned on. We got there around 6:15 on a Saturday night, and there were 12 cars in line (it's drive through only). A worker came to the car to tell us they were out of brisket, ribs, and burnt ends. But we were already in line, and thought, the pulled pork has to be pretty good... both were great! The killer collard greens were spicy and vinegary. Loved them! I don't know the next time I will be in Brevard, but I'll find my way back (earlier in the day) to Smoke-On for the brisket! Stopped at smoke on BBQ after a hike at the Gorges State Park. It is a bright blue building with an easy drive-thru access. This was perfect place to stop after a hike. In the drive-thru there is a large menu to see all of the items that they have to offer. My friend and I both got sandwiches. I got the pimento cheese with brisket sandwich and he got the brisket, Gouda cheese, an onion crisp sandwich. They both were super delicious. You can make any sandwich a combo which comes with either fries or slaw and a drink. I got this slaw and my friend got the fries. Both were super good. I was afraid that this slaw was going to be very vinegar-based but it wasn't too vinegary. I added it to my sandwich since I usually do that with any barbecue sandwich. The service was great and the food was amazing. I recommend grabbing the food and heading over to a picnic table not too far from the barbecue place. We decided on this nearby(ish) place for lunch after hiking Looking Glass Rock. It is drive threw only, but don't let that deter you. We waited about 20 minutes in line as the last car that fit into the queue (with the busy road behind us), but it was absolutely worth the wait. I recommend heading over to a nearby brewery to enjoy the BBQ with with a local beer. The burnt ends and collard greens are outta this world! Both are flavor packed and leave you wanting more. I found them at the White Squirrel festival in Brevard. I ordered the combo platter, which is pork, brisket, and two sides. I chose the cheesy corn and bbq beans. My order was called in maybe five minutes. The pork was excellent. Not melt in your mouth like some places, but with enough texture so you get to experience the release of flavors as you chew. The brisket comes in chunks (!) and is amazing. Again, not melt in your mouth, so you get to experience the flavors as you chew. Don't get me wrong, the meat is nowhere near tough or chewy. It simply has the perfect texture to allow you to savor every delicious bite as the flavor expands into your mouth. The bbq beans were some of the best I have had. They have a robust flavor which stands out against the meat but does not distract or overpower. Again, the perfect texture to allow savoring without turning to mush in your mouth. The cheesy corn was fine. I didn't get much cheese flavor and it was a bit runny overall, but that's more a personal preference than anything wrong with it. I hate to think I may need to wait a year until I travel back to the area to eat here again. Can I justify a several hour trip just for lunch? So tender and flavorful, probably some of the best I've ever had. Each plate came with a piece of bread, coleslaw, pickles, two types of sauces, and a very generous portion of fries. Let me tell you about these fries!! They are crisp and perfect. I don't know what kind of seasonings they use, but I could eat their fries by the basket until the end of my days. I was dipping them in the Carolina gold bbq sauce and it reminded me of salt&vinegar chips. You have to try them! We also got a couple sides - the collards and the cheesy corn. Both were good. The collards had some heat and smokiness. And who doesn't like creamy corn? It was a little too soupy for me, I could have done with more corn and less cheese, but still quite yummy. This place was outstanding, the drive thru was quick, they wore masks, and were extremely friendly. I got the pimento cheese sandwich w/ pulled pork, fries and a sweet tea. It was beyond words. The pimento cheese was perfect, the roll couldn't have been better for what it was holding, the bbq sauce was sweet with a tang. The pulled pork for me stole the show, it melts in your mouth and was so flavorful. There's a place where i'm from in Raleigh that i've crowned best bbq for as long as I can remember.
