My wife and I finally went to our niece's wedding in the Asheville, NC area which was postponed last year due to the flooding from Hurricane Helene. We were headed to the Greenville Spartanburg airport afterwards, when we decided to stop somewhere and eat on the way. We had plenty of time, since we were going to be at the airport about 6 hours early due to a brunch being cancelled in Weaverville due to an accident involving another family member. The first sign we saw that interested us was for two places in Saluda, North Carolina. We decided to exit and take a chance. It was a good choice. After a short 1.5 mile drive in the beautiful countryside, we arrived in the tiny village of Saluda. It was really a quaint and scenic place. We drove past our restaurant choice, but saw no parking. We kept following signs to a parking lot, but suddenly the road we needed to turn on was closed for construction. I kept going to find a place to make a u-turn, when we suddenly saw Green River BBQ and pulled right into the parking lot. We opted to eat inside. At first we, being from San Antonio, were concerned that the dining room wasn't airconditioned. Believe me, it didn't need it! A very friendly server named Joey came to us right away, seated us, and took drink orders. When he brought our drinks we ordered our meals. My wife had a sliced brisket sandwich with fries and coleslaw. I ordered the BBQ Melt (Smoked pork on a king's Hawaiian bun with melted cheddar cheese & Duke's mayonnaise & smothered with caramelized onions.) Without knowing what it was, I substituted tomato pie for my fries. The food was all excellent. My sandwich was so big and loaded with pork that I couldn't eat the last fourth of it. I didn't want to be stuffed on a flying day. The pork was better than any pork I have been served in Texas. They really know how to cook it in the Carolinas. The coleslaw was rich and creamy. I really liked it. The tomato pie is a hard one to describe. The best I can do is to say that it is like the squash casserole we get in Texas, but replace the squash with fresh tomatoes. It was cheesy, gooey, and had a super great tomato taste. The service here was great. I watched as about 6 staffers were setting up for a big family group that came in after us. They worked like a finely orchestrated marching band. All I can say is this: Skip all those other chains that are along Interstate 26 and go to Green River BBQ!
Olive Garden uses the motto "When you're here, you're family," and for the most part, this is true. When you go there, you are part of their dysfunctional, sometimes incestuous, sometimes violence-prone family, - not to mention Olive Garden's bland, overpriced food. But what to do if you want to have a good meal, at a reasonable price, in a warm, welcoming environment that really DOES feel like family? That's where Green River BBQ comes in. Established in 1999, Green River has long been a community staple, and under the recent ownership of Thomas and Brianna Haas, has been serving up some of the best BBQ in the four-county area. How good? Sauces are not needed for either flavor or flavor enhancement. I highly recommend trying the shredded pork or lean brisket sandwiches without condiments - just a bite first, and I think you'll agree. The thick hickory smokiness combined with the perfect tenderness of the meat make for a perfect course. But if you must add condiments, all the sauces are made in-house, and are absolutely delicious. I recommend just a touch of the mustard sauce, along with the house coleslaw, with the previously mentioned pulled pork sandwich. Fantastic! The side-dishes should also be mentioned and given high praise. Their Mac 'n' Cheese is arguably the very best I've ever had, but quite frankly, with any of the sides you can't go wrong. They are all excellent. While the food is the first and foremost reason to patronize this establishment, the owners, Thomas and Brianna, have created a warm, welcoming environment for both customers and their employees. Green River BBQ is a family-friendly eatery. There are accommodations for the munchkins in your life - and that means more than just a high-chair or two: outside there's colored chalk given out with the encouragement to decorate the outside dining ground, as well as coloring placemats. The kid's menu contains items that most children actually want (no kid is going to eat ten pounds of baby back ribs or burnt ends). Grownups of all ages are given no less consideration. From the moment the hostess seats you, the food runners bring your meal, or your server presenting the final bill (be sure to tip them generously - they more than earn it), you'll feel as if you're dining at a beloved cousin's home during a family reunion. So, are there any negatives? Yes. Just one: parking. Parking any vehicle outside of a motorcycle in Saluda is a challenge, due to the limitations of space on the Main Street, and Green River BBQ is no exception. That's the bad news. The good news is that there is public parking located just a few blocks away. So, you may have to walk a short distance, but the food is worth it. So, so worth it. So, to sum up: Green River BBQ is some of the best, down-home, American BBQ you'll find in the area. Give them a try; they'll win you over!
The service was amazing! The food was second to none with generous portion sizes. I appreciated the dog friendly atmosphere. They even provided a bowl of water for our furry friend Maverick! It's a must go to place if you are ever in the area. You will not regret the visit.
Hoping for some good Carolina barbecue as we are traveling south. The ribs were fall off the bone, some of the best I've ever had. So many side choices to choose from. And even though we didn't have room for it, we ordered the banana pudding. Three flavors of barbecue sauce, none of them hit a home run with either of us, but other than that, great barbecue. And besides, who needs sauce! Super friendly service. Too. Excellent atmosphere, inside eating and outside under the patio.
Mom (vegetarian) and I visited on a Saturday , we got there when it opened. They have a parking lot but it fills up quickly. We opted to sit outside because of the weather. We've been long time fans so I was eager to see if anything changed under new ownership. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive but did not hover. Mom and I split the corn nuggets because nobody else does them like they do. YUM Mom got the veggie plate with 2 servings of tomato pie (yes it's that good), a side salad and onion strings. I got the brisket plate with Mac and cheese and tomato pie (to take to hubby). Both are also served with delicious hush puppies. Soft center, crispy outside, not greasy. Everything was amazing and tasted as good as we remembered. Glad to see that they stuck with the fantastic recipes.
A hidden gem! So glad we found this place, located only a few miles off the interstate, and an easy drive through a nice downtown area. The waitstaff were super friendly and polite, and had wonderful recommendations on what to pick. The tea was perfect, and the food was incredible. We took most of it home for dinner that evening. The bbq sauces were perfect accents to the meats. Don't sleep on dessert here! The banana pudding was to die for! Already planning our next camping trip just to come back here again.

Driving from Charlotte NC to Johnson City TN and happened to stop in at Green River BBQ. All I can say is wow, what a great experience. Wonderful flavorful BBQ, very nice casual and friendly atmospher and great service from Gabby. My colleague and I started with the sausage/cheese and tortilla chip appetizer, which is very nice, large portion too, as well as the corn nuggets, which were also very good, and sweet. For my main, I had the ribs, baked potato salad and coleslaw, all of which was very good, tender ribs, not too much sauce and again, very flavorful. My colleague had the brisket/pulled port sandwich and the beans, he thoroughly enjoyed his meal too. I highly recommend this place, what a great surprise, exactly the dining experience you are looking for! read more

I have been coming camping in Saluda for 5 years. Why I have never come here is a issue! It was amazing! My wife and I walked through downtown and needed lunch. After searching Yelp I decided you can never go wrong with BBQ. So lets try Green River. Wow! This place is way more than your standard BBQ fare. They have elevated sandwiches and dishes. My wife got the brisket sandwich special. She loved it. I got the Pulled pork sandwich which had cheese and caramelized onions! Paired with their mustard sauce was a savory treat! The sides were amazing too. Huge order of onion straws. They were light and really tasty. The Tomato pie was super rich but really good! Place is very clean. Large outdoor area which is dog friendly. Service was really good. It was so good we came back Sunday morning for the wives some Bloody Marys and more onion straws! I will be back next year when I am up here for sure! read more

Always a great experience, from the excellent bbq and sides to the friendly staff. Casual atmosphere, dine inside or out, and with a full bar featuring a nice assortment of local beers on tap. The sausage and cheese dip app is highly recommended! read more
We went here on a Sunday and they have a bloody Mary special for $5.00. They will make them how you want, mild or spicy and top them with huge stuffed olives that are so good. The pulled pork & brisket with melted chose and caramelized onions really tops off this sandwich. This Sunday they were out of fried green tomatoes. Then I found out they closed I thought they went out of business because on the web site said temporarily closed. Come to find out when we went on this Wednesday they were off for vacation for a week. Its a family ran business and I like that they are consistent with their food. They had fried green tomatoes, the only thing I noticed is I think they making them slightly different because they had a thicker batter on them and it was crunchy, the last picture I posted the tomatoes didn't have all of that on them. Still amazing with the dressing. The pulled pork & brisket has to be one of the best sandwiches. Not a BBQ fan but this is by far one of the best ones around. read more

The hushpuppies were hot and delicious. Our waitress was warm and cordial. Unfortunately, the food was not! My pork plate was barely warm. My home fried chips were cold and some were soggy. The slaw was not crisp and flavorful. We used to come here years ago and the food was always outstanding. It was a disappointment to have this caliber of food on my most recent visit. There is plenty of free parking in their gravel lot. Be forewarned that backing out of the lot onto the two lane narrow road can be dicey. Due to my fondness for Green River BBQ for over 30 years, I shall return despite this less than stellar occasion. When it's good, it's worth it! read more

Always great barbecue. I had the pulled pork platter with onion straws, & piggly fries, son had a brisket sandwich, & husband had the brisket platter with homestyle fries and slaw. All was tasty and done to perfection. Appetizers were fried pickles and jalapeños, & fried green tomatoes which is a must when coming here. Serving portions are huge so go with an appetite. read more

First time on the search for trout! Lucky me it was on the menu. Ordered trout with fried ocra and slaw. Dinner was delicious especially the fried ocra. I'm not a fan of hush puppies but to my surprise, they were yummy. Both servers were very friendly. I chose to sit outside under the fans looking out and watch the world go by. So our Airbnb didn't really have a lot of choices for food and this place looked the most promising. However, the food was only alright. Ribs weren't fall off the bone, the fried pickles were super salty (they were still good though cause they were crunchy), and the pulled pork was a little dry in my opinion. The bbq sauce here was good though so that covered some of the dryness. This place makes me miss good bbq, but I guess it's not terrible. If you have bbq cravings you can come here, but I wouldn't set your expectations too high. read more

The best barbecue in western North Carolina hand's down. The wife and I stopped by for a early dinner and where blown away by the delicious meal we both had. Very laid back atmosphere and super service from the wait staff. We both had the 3 rib plate which came with 2 sides and we added a portion of pulled pork. If you have never had tomato pie you are in for a treat as it is an available side dish. Wine and beer also available and remember to save room for freshly made dessert try the peanut butter pie definitely will be coming back again read more

(Review of dining experience during Covid phase 2 an order goes in effect at 5 pm tonight requiring masks state wide. We were here for lunch) We ate outside. Each table was covered with brown paper marked as sanitized. None of the staff wore masks, but they were checking temperatures of guests who were eating inside. Food was fabulous, service was friendly and fast. Worth a stop it you are in or near Saluda. Parking can be a challenge, it is limited and located on a blind curve. read more
Came here from out of town on Valentine's Day because it was the only restaurant nearby that didn't have a long wait and was open at 7:30pm on a Friday. The food came out 5 minutes after we ordered which was nice but it wasn't as hot as it should've been. The inside of the restaurant was fairly full with families or couples but there isn't much seating inside the restaurant anyway. I think some of the food was overpriced but we got a fish taco and daily special. We had a meal of $17 but we weren't full. The waitresses were nice and the staff was great though. read more
