Stopped in after hiking to grab some BBQ. They have a nice sized covered outdoor dinning area that is dog friendly. The 2 ladies working during our visit were amazing! They were very attentive and gave us great recommendations on their many sides and other offerings. They were very friendly with our boxer and our 8 year old. The food arrived very quickly! We like GRBBQ for its great quality foods and proximity to I-26. We often stop on our way to HHI. The menu offers numerous choices for vegetables in addition to the various meats. Sauce is optional. This place is either good or bad with food or service or both. Today was not good and trending toward bad. So, generally weekends are more busy and food is fresher and service is better, or so it might seem. Feeling optimistic, we broke my own general advice and stopped by on a Tuesday for lunch. The hostess/waitress insisted that we take the table by the door rather than one of the 5 empty tables closer to the corner. Likely in order to save her a few steps to deliver food. There were about 3 customers in the restaurant. We ordered two lunch specials and a rib lunch. 15 minutes later - they had forgot 1 of the specials. This was corrected 8 minutes later with the other delivery. Drinks empty and no one around. I guess the quiet corner table was a little too far to walk. Some days are better than others. read more

Okay guys....I gave 2 stars becuase I want to be generous, cos you don't go to Saluda for BBQ......the service was lousy, food was bad and the pricing wasn't any good, plus we waited for 30 minutes. We tried explaining to her what we wanted but she seems like she knows what we wanted and does not care to listen. Additionally, she dropped our part of our food on the ground!....I not making this up..... Food :- 2 out of 5 Here...again...I'm been nice.....The ribs were like bone dry. I've tasted better ribs at Costco. The brisket was too lean and dry as well. Worst part is that the taste was bland. The only saving grace was the chicken, the BBQ chicken quarter was good. I'm a barbeque snob. Let's get that out of the way. As far as their technique this place deserves a visit. It's always a good sign when the meat stands on its own without the sauce ( and there was a fine selection of sauces by the way, mustard based, mild, and spicy). The brisket was a perfect cut and slow smoked to an ideal tenderness. The pulled pork was outstanding and held a consistent texture and smoke ratio. The trout, on the other hand, had a nice flavor but was tough and overcooked. The downside to the entire experience was that everything we ate here was cold. Even the beans! Oh, how wish both the beans and the hushpuppies had been at least warm. They had a nice flavor, just served at room temperature. I decided to check out Green River BBQ because I had to meander down to Saluda to pick up some eye drops at the vet for the puppers. Also - I was having a really crap day at work because some old man in Florida had been trolling on our Facebook page for days on end, and I manage the social media - so I decided to treat myself. The people sitting next to me actually had a dog - I wanted to ask if it would be ok to take a picture of him for my blog, but interaction with dogs that don't belong to me tends to be a slippery slope. It's starts out with a picture, then a pat on the head, then I usually begin starting at them with Sméagol eyes. And then all of the sudden I'm the "creepy lady at the restaurant sitting next to us that wouldn't stop talking to our dog". Oh, fyi; they do have an over abundance of dog water bowls - just in case you don't carry your own like a horrible dog owner (or forgot it). To drink, I ordered a lemonade which was sweet and very refreshing and delightful as I've been savoring the last days of summer. To eat I ordered the Smoked Trout Tacos and Portobello Fries. My food came on fun little silver plates- super "rustic country yet modern" and *very* cute. I got two tacos in my dinner order, and they were just the right amount of smoked and super fresh. The portobello fries were delish as well, esp. dipped in the ranch sauce. They were both crunchy on the outside - yet juicy on the inside. A very interesting combination that I throughly enjoyed. I ended up getting a box for my food to go and my server was thoughtful enough to bring lids for the condiments, without me even asking for them. Ditch your friends or be disappointed. We were given a "Condensed Menu for large parties" (see photo) when we arrived with a group of 10. We couldn't order appetizers. Entrees were limited to basically pulled pork, chicken or brisket either with or without a bun. Ribs, smoked turkey, chicken fingers or fish??? No. The 'anytime salad'??? No... not really anytime. The menu stated "at very bust times and extra large parties we have to limit our menu to accommodate the other customers". It was Sunday at 4:30, less than 1/3 of the tables were occupied, and a group of 10 is far from an 'extra large party'. We offered to split into separate groups/tables but were denied the option; the manager became more rude at our attempt to interject logic. I suggest they start blaming their own staffing for their problems rather than their customers. We left and went to the Whistle Stop Pizza & Wings down the street and had a fantastic barbecue pizza and great service. read more

Green River Barbeque is tops for me! Green River Barbeque in Saluda, NC is my top overall choice for Barbeque and ambiance. The food here is great and I like the ambiance both inside and out. They have a nice outdoor seating area. You'll find all of your favorites on the menu and I've never had a bad experience. I'm usually a pulled pork sandwich type and Green River has been in for me across all of my travels and new journey in NC to try more places. I love the side options and they will even split sides into halves so you can add a little variety without all of the extra food. Parking can be a little tough but that should not slow you down. Also, you can take a nice little stroll in downtown Saluda to work off a few calories. Green River is my standard for a great BBQ experience. Update: I've taken my dog here with me to eat outside twice now. Fantastic! The staff is great with dogs and will even bring over a water bowl. Love the food and atmosphere! It's location is definitely off the beaten path, but so worth the drive. My boyfriend ordered his favorite sandwich, the Carolina Texan (pulled pork, brisket, melted cheese and caramelized onions). He swears it's the best sandwich he's ever had! I ordered the chicken quarter with baked beans, which alone are worth the drive, and the regular slaw. Even their hush puppies are great! This was my baby's first restaurant! The atmosphere was hardcore barbeque joint, but with 80's hits playing in the background (at least when we were there). The barbecue sauce was really good, along with the food. My husband got the bbq melt and devoured it, saying it was the best bbq sandwich he has ever had. We love this place and are frequent guests. The BBQ is solid and so are the burgers, tacos (very special), and wings. They have a few sauces from which to choose. Meat is tender. Food was ok. I have eaten here before and it was touch and go. Its a cool local and when the weather is nice, sitting outside is great. This time I was passing through and in a bit of a hurry. Cold out, so opted to sit in. Server was lousy. She wasnt friendly at all. She got me water forgot my lemon. Had to ask for silverware, which seems to be a thing now. I ordered food came out and it was luke warm. I wanted to ask if it could be heated up - but she was very busy talking to a male friend at the bar. I hesitate to give this place a 1 star rating it's more for the service than the food. I got a pulled pork sandwich with grilled onions. The bun fell apart in my hands. The pork was very dry. The sauce at this location was to me simple like that of the big box Arby's fast food. I also had the macaroni and cheese which had no cheese taste more of milk taste with a tinge of something kraft off the shelve. It me was more for a novelty barbecue joint or locals hang out for the small town. I could not say it was worth even a second visit the price to food ratio was way out of whack as well. I was surprised to see a 4 star but thats only from 35 plus reviews. Also the flies spent more time on my plate than my fork. Trying to eat with one hand and swatting flies with the other. Guys. This is it. This is the spot. You know how when you go for BBQ you're always excited about the sides and then they're usually a let down? Not this place. I would return for the sides alone (tomato pie, baked potato salad, Mac and cheese) but the fact that the BBQ is on point as well makes this a done deal for me. Coupled with the fact that they have their act together with Covid safety policies and practices, I am a fan. We can't wait to go back and dine in when we feel comfortable doing that (there did appear to be limited dine in and outside) and try all the offerings fresh and piping hot but everything was still delish after we got home.
