I like this smog check stop because it is really a quick stop to complete the test and be ready in 20 minutes. The owner, Sam is very calm, cordial and knowledgeable at the same time. If you don't have any questions Sam is unobtrusive, he will perform the smog check test and will let you go without extra talking. But if you want to know how or why engine works this way or another or any specifics about ignition or anything related he will explain it to you easily and comprehensively. Oh, and by the way his price is very reasonable too. Definitely recommend. read more

So I called ahead to speak to the owner, Sam, if he would provide a discount that would match the price of another smog place. I distinctly remember him saying that he would. So I show up after work. The first thing is that he is on the computer watching a video. He tells me to wait while he continues to watch the video. So I wait. I then confirm the price would be what he told me. He then tells me that his price is a different price than what he told me over the phone. I would avoid this place because they dont honor their price and they clearly dont value customers if they're telling customers to wait so they finish watching a video. read more

I like old cars... and mine is a real duzey every 2 years, when it comes time to inspect it for its smog certification, namely the '02 VW Eurovan. Sam, the owner of Smog Plus Plus likes old cars too. He helped me understand the prerequisites for the smog test eligibility, and how to drive the car to establish the ODB-II data log that is required to pass the smog test. Always fair with their pricing, Smog Plus Plus is a Star-Certified station. Located at the South-East corner of Fairfax Avenue and Pico Boulevard, the shop is accessed by car through the alley. Thanks again Sam, for helping me to keep my favorite ride's compliance up-to-date and legit! -Kei Men read more

To get to the location you have to enter in the alley off the Fairfax side. It's kind of tight but very doable. The gentleman that helped me do not talk very much, but was very very helpful. I was in and out on the lake Friday in 30 minutes and I can just about closing time. They were quick and easy. read more

This guy is horrible and great at the same time. He's such a curmudgeon and has the worst DGAF attitude. I would gave it 0 stars, but it's so bad that its actually hilarious and I don't take it personally anymore (I had to go 3 times, long story). I laugh it off because the guy is old, he works in a dump-alley, and he's pissed because you made him stop playing his solitaire or whatever game he's playing on his computer. Anyway, go give this troll your business. Or you can go to smog kings in inglewood and they'll smog you without all the antics for 45 bucks or something. Way cheaper than this. read more

I was in and out in 15 minutes, very efficient. The car didn't pass at first and he explained it was because the battery had just been changed. I was able to bring it back for a free re-test a few days later after I had drove it enough to get more data into the onboard computer. read more

I have known and dealt with Sam for 20+ years. Over this period of time, I have brought him many vehicles requiring a smog test and conferred in him about vehicles with various emission issues preventing their passing. Sam's technical background is unparalleled in my book; he is honest and respectful with his customers, reasonably priced, and if you have an auto question for him, guaranteed he will give you a thoughtful and knowledgeable answer. Stay around, Sam. Mech-tech DIY JK. read more

Called Sam (the owner) this morning for a Smog test on my 2010 Ford Escape. He said just come on by. I drove in 30 minutes later and Sam got it all done in minutes. Way better than my last Smog check. Took ages last time. Thanks again Sam. I'll be back and for sure if you want a quick turn around, call Sam read more

Service is speedy and kind. It was very easy to go in and out, and the inspection price was very reasonable.

The guy here is a jerk. Period. He enjoyed telling me he charges 60.00 for a smog inspection and I was the only person who had a problem with that overcharged price. Besides the location being annoying this guy just makes it a horrible experience. He also told me good luck finding it cheaper. Well, go to: Star Certified Smog 1301 S. La Brea LA CA 90019 Ask for Oscar. 48.00 quick, easy, and service with a smile. No need to be an ass just because you work in an alley. read more

Enter from FAIRFAX Blvd. and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes! Really nice gentleman offered me and seat and everything was okay. My husband usually handles all of this but he explained what to do to get the paperwork in on time. Great service.! read more

You are in and then you are out. Super fast. Enter on Fairfax in the alleyway though and not on Pico. It's a tight squeeze to get in.

This place is now my go-to auto place for any service they offer. I called the day before I came to get an estimate on an oil change and star- certified smog check since my car isn't registered yet. Sam (I think he owns the joint) answered my questions and was courteous to let me know that the guy that does the oil wasn't there that day. I went in the next day and became nervous because it's such a tiny place. If you can't drive, come in slowly or let one of them pull in your car for you. The alley entrance is a bit cramped. I was helped fairly quickly by a sweet man who offered me a cold water bottle. He got to work on my oil change and then I met Sam. He is a bit older and walked around observing everything done to my car; he's very quiet which may come off as impersonal, but he's just about business which I don't mind at all. The people calling him rude and an asshole probably want some bubbly car man that caters to their every need. I just want the shit done to my car to be good and affordable. Besides, Sam isn't mean; just QUIET. I was shocked her remembered talking to me the day before. He honored the $5 dollar off discount that's on their website and my car passed the smog inspection. I was up close and personal during the oil change and saw that it was done very well. I'm definitely coming here for my brakes and will be coming here for my oil changes. Having said that, I recommend it. read more

I was a bit confused with the owner-he looks serious (kind of intimidating), but he was actually very nice and works well. I took in my car to get the light and break inspection unfortunately it didn't pass, but he didn't charge me until I fixed a light. When I returned he inspected it again and he passed it and then charged me $70.00. He could have charged me twice, but he was very nice about it and didn't take advantage of his customers (like other places). I highly recommend this location!!!! read more

Stopped by here on a referral from my mechanic to get a new catalytic converter. The owner checked my car, said the reason I had not passed smog was that the current converter was the wrong one and so wore out faster than normal and gave me a quote for a new one. After a quick check I determined the price was on the low end so decided to do it. He said he could do it right away and 90 minutes later I had a new one installed. They also do smog checks here but are not STAR certified, which my vehicle required, so wasn't able to finish that part there, but no matter. Always good to find a no nonsense repair shop. It's in the alley parallel to Pico just off Fairfax. Can't see it from Pico. read more

took my money, didnt pass n had to argue to get a second test even though he said he would give for free. A most unfriendly man. I tried my hardest to be friendly to no avail. Rude, not even a smile or basic manners. I would never go back read more

Go see Sam. He will take good care of you. Came in today for a smog check and lamp and break inspection and his prices are way cheaper than any other place in Los Angeles. He has been in the business for about 40 years. A lot of auto shops try to trick you into getting things you don't need, but not Sam. He was honest and to the point. Thank you. I came here after work, and arrived about 20 min before their stated closing time. The man at the smog station however was very rude and said he had closed the shop already. I mentioned the time so he said, "Okay fine, it's $65." That is an outrageous price (and way above what the DMV sets for smog checks). He just wanted to go home and not deal with me. It was a very bad experience. read more

Got a smog test done here. Everything went fine. The guy did that grunting thing where he would point at things and like grunt instead of saying something. "Oh, I'm supposed to sign here, got it" Not sure if it was a language barrier or if maybe he just didn't want to expend the energy to do the actual talking thing. Fortunately it's a smog test, not a consult with the brain surgeon. read more

The Smog guy was nice enough. He was a quiet man who got down to business. The place has no real waiting area and I walked the block for the 30 mins of testing. I took my car in for a California certified brake and lamp inspection. The price estimate was reasonable, $70. I had gotten a quote elsewhere of $150. I have been going to Sam for several years now with my Volkswagen Golf and also my previous Volkswagen Golf. As a girl it is always tough to find a trustworthy mechanic who is honest. Sam is very quiet, calm and sweet. He has ALWAYS helped me in emergencies and always fixes my car. He is very knowledgeable, honest, and affordable. Other mechanics have taken advantage of me in the past. They tell you a small problem is thousands of dollars but Sam will do whatever it takes to make his client walk away with a big smile on their face. He always looks out for his client and puts them first. I would highly recommend anyone to go to Sam and can promise you that you will keep going back to him. :) He is truly THE BEST!!!! read more
