This place (Smog It) was recommended to me by the good people at A-1 Foreign Auto in Mountain View where I usually take my car in for smog services. Apparently, they don't provide smog services any more. As for Smog It, they provided great service both on the phone and in person. Courteous and to the point from appointment setting, to how long it will take, to price. My wait time from arrival to leaving was about 30 minutes; not bad at all. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available, but I did not utilize it. Due to COVID-19, facial coverings are required and they will only allow a maximum of three customers at a time. The waiting area inside was a bit uncomfortable (for me) to keep a safe distance from others. So I waited outside. Not a big deal. Overall, I definitely had a good experience to get my smog service done. Need to get your smog done ... I highly recommend Smog It. Joe thought my car might be able to pass if we rechecked it -- and it passed! Instead of paying $100 for a diagnostic, and more for repairs, I only paid $48 for the smog check. I appreciate how thoughtful it was of him to suggest the smog check when I had already agreed to pay more for the diagnostic. Really appreciated Joe's help. I brought in an old car that hadn't been driven in months and needed a smog check. Joe shared some quick pricing info over the phone and I came in. It turned out that my car had a few other obstacles before I could get a smog check. Joe stayed after his closing time to help me understand what to do next, including where to get a new battery when it became clear I'd need a new one for the car to start reliably on its own. I was able to resolve that and came back to Smog It a different day, where I got my smog check completed successfully! I also asked about wait time (always good to check) and he only had one car ahead of me, so I took it down. Unfortunately, my car barely failed the smog, so I'm at my mechanics to get them to clean the sensors. ***PRO TIP FOR OLDER CARS... RUN YOUR ENGINE AT OPERATING SPEED FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES BEFORE BRINGING IT IN FOR A TEST!!! My mechanics at First Choice Automotive in Campbell said that, since it passed at high speed and only failed barely at slow speed, my converter wasn't hot enough to be fully working so I didn't pass my test.*** Going back to get retested in a little bit. First time customer, and I was majorly impressed. The owner/operator? I guess... was the only one around, but now I know why. He didn't NEED anyone else! Super fast service, and he even worked with his next door shop owner (A Euro/Merc auto shop... and since I have a Mercedes) to replace my low beam headlamp for super cheap, and I mean SUPER cheap. Had I gone to Autobahn it would have been ... don't even want to guess. Back to the smog work. I was in and out in 1/2 hr. They can submit everything on the fly these days to DMV and take the payments (even my, cough cough... "late" payment), hand over official Registration (temp) documentation, and most importantly, the new registration sticker!!! I had used Smog It Test Only Center 2 years ago when I last needed to get my car smogged and found them efficient, courteous and professional. Well, they moved from their previous location in Sunnvale and I initially couldn't locate them, So ..... Recently I made the mistake of using Green Smog Check Test Only Center in Sunnyvale because it was more convenient, WOW, what a mistake !! Not only did they fail my car, but they NEVER specifically explained the cause of the failure. Since I had just recently replaced the catalytic converter my mechanic told me that I needed to drive the car as the 'Monitors were Not Ready'. Well I drove it around 400 miles and took it back a 2nd time, and the Green Smog Check Test Only Center has no retest policy, so I wound up paying a 2nd time, and it failed a second time, and again the clowns didn't explain the failure. Finally my mechanic told me where 'Smog It Test Only Center' moved and I took my car back to 'Smog It Test Only Center' at their new location in Mt. View and the car passed the first time !!!!!!! read more

I took my previous vehicle to have its final smog check performed here, 10 years ago (when they were located in Sunnyvale), and was so enamored with how well it went that I remembered them when California finally decided it was time for me to have my hybrid vehicle smog-checked. I called up and was told they weren't busy, drove my car down, and was in and out in under 30 minutes. $50 for the test and the smog certificate (which is sent electronically to the DMV). I tried them a couple of years ago before they moved locations, and came back and wasn't disappointed. An honest, hard working soft spoken owner (Joe)/ tech and wife run small business. They did just in time scheduling over the phone, saw me when I made an appointment. The car failed the smog test because of the NOx emission standard change; I was correctly briefed on my options, apparently the state helps to pays partially to have it fixed through select shops after a deductible, and was given the paperwork. I decided to go with my trusted local mechanic, who fixed the problem. They promptly did a "FREE" retest, again with proper scheduling, and only at this juncture did they charge me the certificate fee, which they were careful to deduct the first time around. Charged me as quoted, no hidden fees/ taxes. Theyr in a new facility, probably need to do some work, maybe a water dispenser upfront in the waiting area, I was happy to find today's copy of the Mercury news there while I waited. @ read more
