Stopped by Smitten Ice Cream in the Mission on a weekday evening and had a really nice experience. I got a small strawberry with strawberry sauce. On its own, the ice cream didn't have a super strong strawberry flavor, but the sauce really brought it together and made each bite better. Texture-wise, it was SUPER creamy, and the scoop was honestly perfectly shaped. The staff were friendly and welcoming,, gave us an ETA on when we can expect our ice cream, which made the visit even better. There's a bathroom in the back, and a decent amount of table space/seating if you want to hang out. Bonus - it had no line when I went, which felt like a win. Even though they've never quite been my favorite ice cream shop, I've always been a huge fan of Smitten. In part because they make (used to make...) one of my favorite flavors ever (Lemon Shortbread Cookie), but also because they were my first exposure to ice cream made with liquid nitrogen, which freezes ice cream almost instantly and creates a creamier/smoother texture. Watching the water vapor pour out of the bowl as they make each batch is also a pretty cool sight, but, more importantly than anything else, their ice cream is just pretty darn tasty! Compared to their locations in the Marina, Hayes Valley, and Rockridge that I've been to (all of which have since closed, sadly), this Smitten has way more personality...and a lot more seating. Between the tables and seats inside and their parklet outside, there's a good amount of space for folks to sit and enjoy their scoops. As for the menu, most of the items will consistently appear, including their signature offerings, like their Brookies 'n Cream and Cookie Dough with Pretzels and Chocolate Chips. However, they'll also have seasonal flavors and occasionally tweak some of their creations (for example, they usually offer a sundae, but the ingredients/toppings will change). -- COOKIE DOUGH W/ PRETZELS & CHOCOLATE CHIPS While this was may have been my third time having this, this one wasn't the charm. I don't know if this particular batch was just off, but this less sweet and salty and more sweet than salty. What's more, my scoop didn't seem to have a lot of cookie dough in it either. -- PINEAPPLE CREAM Not as good as my favorite flavor here, but this wasn't far behind! For me, the pineapple part of this was perfect - a little acidic and sweet, but not overly so. What's more, the ice cream had a nice creaminess to it that balanced out the pineapple really well. Delicious! Considering how several of their imitators have come and gone, as well as how Smitten is now down to just two locations in the Bay Area (the other is at Santana Row in San Jose), part of me worries whether it's just a matter of time before this one closes as well. I know there are a ton of great ice cream joints in SF and that liquid nitrogen could be considered a bit of a fad, but I genuinely think Smitten is a pretty solid spot for a scoop. Each scoop is made to order, and there were only five or six flavors to choose from on the day I visited. After consulting with the cashier, I decided to order the most popular flavor, Brookies 'N Cream. After I placed my order, I watched the magic unfold before my eyes as my scoop was formulated in a cloud of vapor. After we all received our ice cream, my friends and I enjoyed it in the cute parklet outside the shop. The ice cream was rich and super smooth, although the flavors were more subtle than I was expecting - the cookie and brownie bits were more like crumbs than batter. We ending up choosing the coffee flavor and the service for the almost empty building was incredibly slow, although it was friendly. The taste of the massive scoop was like smelling coffee grounds. I found it rather unpleasant, and it was easily twice the size it should have been. All in all, while I liked their abundant seating and their location, I much preferred the ice cream of Garden Creamery down the way, as the visuals of the liquid nitrogen mixers were honestly the best part of visiting Smitten Ice Cream. read more

Dropped by on a weekend. The place was fairly empty although a steady stream of people coming in and out. Interesting concept as they spin the ice cream in front of you with liquid nitrogen. Service was prompt. They only have a handful of flavor combos (maybe 6 when we came) so if you like a lot of choice this is not the place for you.
