    Oak Grove Marina

    Oak Grove Marina

I went searching for marina's on the south river last year towards the end of the season. I was…read morevery turned off by the extremes I found. Either they were huge, expensive-"corporate"-feeling marinas which had good amenities etc, or they were dumpy boat yards full of old, neglected boats. Then I came upon Oak Grove. It's in a perfect location for boating the South River. I was greeted by the owner when I went to inquire about pricing. He was very laid back and friendly and quoted very reasonable rates for the various options. Boatel, Wet Slips and lift Slips. The marina has been family owned for a long time and it shows. The owner and staff have been extremely patient with my questions. What was important to me in a Marina? A great location easy to get to on/off route 50, plenty of stores, restaurants in the area, friendly, chill staff, and a mechanic on site. They had all that. Edgewater is a great small town next door to Annapolis with everything you could need. You can be at several great little restaurants/tiki bars on the water in minutes. When I upgraded my boat this season, the marina sold me on a lift slip at a reasonable rate. I told them when the new boat would be arriving and they had the slip ready to go and adjusted as promised. When selling my old boat, they even agreed to allow me to keep it in a wet slip temporarily for sea trials. This was generous and much appreciated. I sold the old boat quickly thanks to the marina's flexibility. The marina has been gradually updating some of it's piers and keeps everything well maintained. Oak Grove is situated facing the river at sunset which blows me away on a regular basis. It has clean bathrooms, ice for purchase on site, and a fuel dock and pump-out with decent prices. Everything needed for boating. It doesn't have a swimming pool, spa, etc. If I want a load of amenities, I'll go to a resort. I go here so I can get the boat in the water fast and without hassle. It's nice knowing I can deal with any issues immediately thanks to the responsive, easy-going staff.

As a seasoned boater it is my advise to stay away from this marina. The docks are falling…read moreapart, missing boards, splintered etc. Furthermore, the slips are small with poor hardware or cleats for securing boat. Staff are generally nice but marina is very run down.

Reviewing South Annapolis Yacht Centre (SAYC) is a challenge…read more Here is the short version of the history. The current owners purchased two adjacent marinas that were somewhere between run-down and sketchy. They've done a really outstanding clean up job and repaired a lot of things. They have an excellent development plan that respects the environment and the neighborhood although some reservations have been expressed. Downsides: you have to pass under the Spa Creek bridge so if your air draft is over 15 feet you have to wait for the drawbridge to open. Some infrastructure (parking, walkways) is still a little rough. Upsides: great management, good service, a true investment in the community, responsive staff, and a location that is really hard to beat when visiting Annapolis, good prices. You can walk to a range of good eateries: quite close are Vin 909, Eastport Kitchen, and Sammie's Italian Kitchen. Further but doable are Boatyard Bar and Grill, Carroll's Creek, Davis' Pub, and all of downtown historic Annapolis. Most maritime services in Annapolis (which is pretty much everything you might need) will come to SAYC. Giant Food grocery is within striking distance for general provisioning and for those special contributions for a docktail invitation Tastings Gourmet Market is in reach. Mills Fine Wine & Spirits is not far; a little beyond their delivery radius but if you are real nice.... I prefer Eastport Liquors. South Annapolis Yacht Centre is truly a contribution to the maritime community in Annapolis, America's Sailing Capitol.

Following a fresh vision under new ownership, SAYC is part of a rich Annapolis maritime heritage and will be a beautiful marina village, a state of the art boatyard, and office spaces available to local maritime businesses. Our new marina features floating piers, Ipe decking, state-of-the-art power pedestals, a new three-phase power grid, and many other amenities. SAYC is conveniently located along Spa Creek in the historic Eastport area of Annapolis, Maryland. Considered the most protective haven for yachts in the area, our location upriver of the Spa Creek drawbridge is protected, quiet, and less subject to the wakes, currents & wind associated with being in the harbor. Just a short walk or water taxi to downtown Annapolis, SAYC has easy access to city dock, Annapolis Harbor and the Severn River. Very disappointing experience with Absolute Marine's handling of my boat's bottom painting. As a…read morerepeat customer, I followed their process by submitting a service request in March and confirming my drop-off for this past weekend. After delivering the boat, I was presented with an estimate double my previous costs and 65% higher than the pricing indicated on the service intake form that they asked me to complete. When I called to discuss these unexpected charges, I received an email stating they no longer have the bandwidth to complete the work and requesting that I pick up my vessel immediately. Abruptly canceling my service in May left me in a difficult position at the start of the season. This experience and lack of professional communication were extremely frustrating and consistent with the negative feedback I have heard from others.

I also had starting problems so they pumped out the fuel and that did not get it started. They installed a fuel pump but they used a automotive pump that did not fit, The problem is that it did not work and after 1 mile down the river the engine cut out. I had a marine mechanic neighbor look at it and he explained that an automotive pump when it fail drains fuel down to the street. Very dangerous and against Coast Guard regulations. My pump is above the battery bins. Explosions and fires have resulted. The marine pump uses a line that drains to the carb when it fails. This puts my family at risk and although they know what they did they told me to call their lawyer who after a year has still not responded... Stay away!

Have recently had a really terrible experience with these folks…read more It appears very likely they screwed something up big time when they winterized, stored, and unwinterized our boat -- which only had a few hours on it before we entrusted them with its care. It broke down in dramatic fashion the first time we had it on the water after we got it back from them. The boat's in the shop now for some major engine/outdrive repair. On top of that, the guy who owns/operates this place has the worst customer service ethic I've ever encountered. He promised to get back to me about my broken down boat but never did (we had left the boat with them until we could figure out how to arrange for its repair). He didn't respond to emails or voicemails. When I finally got a hold of him weeks later, he had the audacity to claim that he hadn't been able to get a hold of me -- because he didn't have my contact info. After pressing him on his obvious lie, he admited that he never bothered to look at my emails or even look in his file cabinet where he had a copy of my winter storage contract -- with all my contact info on it. After all that, he then demanded payment for "storing" my broken down boat for the extra few weeks I was waiting to hear from him about trying to arrange for a repair -- otherwise he would not allow me to take my boat. Ironic and infuriating, to say the least, given the circumstances. This business has been steadily losing customers since the current owner/operator acquired it in 2008 and apparently is now on the verge of bankruptcy. No surprise why. According to public records, the current owner/operator paid a ridiculous amount of money - $3.4 million - for the business and the 2 acres it sits on. Assuming the money was largely borrowed to pay for it, that translates into roughly $250K in mortgage payments and property taxes each year. No way a business that's being driven into the ground can cover that. I'm never dealing with these folks again -- not that they're going to around much longer. Maybe after they're foreclosed on, the business will be sold by the bank to someone who knows what it means to run a successful customer-oriented boating business. UPDATE: I passed by Magothy Boatel the day before hurricane Irene was due to arrive. A 30+ foot, very expensive looking powerboat was on its side on the ground about 20 feet from the water, with a distraught family standing there looking at it. Appeared as though it had fallen off the forklift just after it had been taken out of the water. Ouch. Felt sorry for the family.

I will admit that…read morethe PREVIOUS owner was a little unpleasant at times, but the staff I dealt with on a daily basis was great so I didn't care. Now the marina is under new management and things are even better. They are making improvements to the marina daily, so that is exciting. The other boaters we have met are all super nice! If we need a hand someone is always willing to help, which is nice because you just don't see that too often:). It's a family atmosphere and that's what we were looking for. I am very surprised to hear (in a previous post) that they may have experienced winterization problems. I only say this because the marina doesn't offer this service. They provide slips and storage - no winterization services. This sounds like an issue with the company you got to winterize your boat, not the marina. You should Yelp about them, because I'd be mad if someone messed up my boat too!
