I live out of town so whenever I come to visit my girls. I try to stop and get cookies. Usually buy them at one of the other stores but this was on my way out of town. Stopped in at around 9:30 am. Shelves were pretty much empty, but they did have my fav the thumbprints. Which actually are ridiculously priced now! There were two women working, one never even turned around to acknowledge me. The employee that helped me acted like she was totally put out by putting my purchase together. Would not smile or respond to any of my questions. I am in customer service so I know how to treat customers. I was very friendly. I spent a high amount here. And barely got a thank you. I know everyone can have a bad day, but come on. Need better customer service skills. I will continue to love my smiths. But will not be returning to this particular store. read more

I've always loved Smith's bakery, when I was younger it was always my special treat for having good grades or receiving a reward . Smith's is always so nostalgic to me . I went in today to snag some goodies for Mother's Day . They have so much amazing looking pastries! I asked the ladies behind the counter for a recommendation and they said maple bars are very good along with the thumbprint cookies . As much as I love Smith's cookies and cakes, this location hardly ever has any selection in the store. If I know I'll be in town I make sure to order in advance. Otherwise the only shortbread cookies available are usually smiley faces or thumbprints. I only prefer this location because it's closest to where I stay. When I order the cookies, they're always so soft and fresh! They freeze well also. I usually get teddy bears, alligators, thumbprints, hearts and smilies There are usually some cake or donut samples out on the counter. We also enjoy the brownies and pastries, which are more likely in stock. The last time I was in, I saw they make dog treats! Supposedly they're a big hit with the doggies. read more

Oh my goodness we drove from LA to Bakersfield for the white champagne cake for my sons first holy communion. It was amazing. This is our favorite cake! Smith's bakery definitely makes one of the best cakes ever. My favorite cake is hands down Smith's very own champagne cake. Every year on my birthday I look forward to my birthday cake because I know I'm getting a pink champagne cake. I always recommend this cake to everyone and anyone who has not tried it and they also do cupcakes. Smith's definitely has other baked goods and treats, but I'm seriously a sucker for that champagne cake. Love the creamy custard in the center and the white chocolate just tops this cake off perfectly. It was neat to see that the Valentine's cookies are out on display. Some were cute and creative. I liked the colors of the thumbprint cookies. By 230pm, there was not a whole lot of choice left (not many donuts, muffins, cookies) but I waited my turn (it was busy!) and bought a few cookies to gift. Lady staff members were friendly! I'm a fan of several items from Smith's. My first birthday cake was the champagne cake from Smith's with the pink chocolate shavings. For nearly every birthday we've ordered the champagne cake through Smith's. Although the recipe seems to have changed with the cream it's still one of my favorite cakes ever and leftovers can be frozen in an airtight container. You also can't really go wrong with their shortbread cookies. They are light with a semi-soft icing. I truly believe they have perfected the shortbread cookie because the icing to cookie ratio is spot on. Also, can't really be upset with a smiley face cookie or thumbprints. Another treat I enjoy here are the maple bars. The maple bars set the standard and no one has really come close to it except for Fosters Donuts on White Ln only (seriously, don't go to any other Fosters except White Ln). I have to admit that the maple bars at Smith's are not as good as they were a few years ago. However, even with the slight change in taste, I will still find my self walking out with a dozen maple bars. read more

This is my favorite Smith's Bakery location. It used to be my "Must Visit" bakery back in the day. Nowadays, though, I make it by here not as often. The best time to come here is in the morning. In the afternoons, the display cases are pretty barren. Most of their pastries and other bakery items are really good. Some of my favorites here are the cheese danish, champagne cake, and beehive (I think that's the name). Smith's Bakery has not changed much over the years. They've been voted the Number 1 Bakery in the "Best of Bakersfield" contest practically every year. They are a Bakersfield icon. Even though, I do not agree that they are the best bakery in Bakersfield.....I am still a fan. read more

Desserts, whether cakes, cupcakes, pastries and doughnuts I am not drawn to them wildly. I can admit that almost each time I visit Smith's Bakeries it is for my wife and/or kids. And my check-ins here do not reflect my visits because sometimes the visit is a secret to surprise my wife, I'm slick like that. Do not get me wrong, I have eaten the goodies from here and for someone who does not love sweets, Smith's is definitely a good dang baker. The secret check-in is usually when I am picking up a Pink Champagne cake or Pink Champagne Cupcakes, both are really the same but in different forms. Both are so decadent that it makes you want to eat as slowly as possible to savor each bite. Maricel P swears this is one of the best ever she has had. On my last visit I picked up something for me which was very good to look at, then when I asked what it was, the description enticed me to buy it. It is called a Beehive. It is a pastry made like a pizza that has honey and walnuts spread all over it, I may be missing another ingredient but this thing was scrumptious. Now I do not recommend too many visits to Smith's since it is not the healthiest, but if you are looking for a divine treat, do not hesitate to give them a visit. read more

I am so disappointed in this bakery. My fiancé got me a surprise rainbow and happy face cookie from here on a Friday. I forgot them at my desk at work, so on Monday when I discovered them, I was thrilled! They keep pretty well for a few days. I dove into the happy face cookie first. As I ate the edges off, one bite got stuck and wouldn't break off. That's because there was a LONG WHITE HAIR baked and frosted into the cookie. When we went to talk to the store, all they did was replace the cookie! While I appreciate the gesture, usually when a hair is in your food, the food is free and replaced. I realize this is a $2 cookie, but that hair was IN MY MOUTH. Blah. At this time, their resolution of giving me a free cookie does not satisfy me at all. I have a call in to the manager and hopefully Lori will give me a reason to enjoy Smith's cookies again and to change my rating. read more

Went today 12/18 Tuesday before noon and the cookies were very soft, almost melted. They usually aren't like this, maybe because of the holidays and rushed. Also, the staff - Caroline and another lady were totally rude! Rushed, wouldn't let me explain my order (simple mix of a dozen cookies), cut me off and just plain mean. A dozen champagne cake cupcakes are 35 dollars, a cookie is 2 dollars, one cupcake is 3.00 now that is Vegas prices and for a Bakersfield product it's not worth it in my opinion.. Not sure what everyone is complaining about, we're from the Bay Area but have had their thumbprints, pigs and sun cookies and we're hooked! So we stopped by for the first time and the lady who helped(wish I had her name) was AMAZING! She was super informative, helpful and soooo polite! She even let us sample doughnuts and we left buying two of those as well! Can't complain if you come late or during the holidays. That is how they stay in business, there items fly off the shelves! It is a bit expensive but so much better than any shop out here not named Krispy Kreme. This is not a knock on them but no one does Krispy Kreme donuts like Krispy Kreme.
