Cyma Space is a project by and for deaf and senses challenged artists to make work for you…read more It is the project of deaf musician Myles de Bastion. https://qz.com/844149/a-deaf-musician-is-creating-a-universal-algorithm-to-make-beautiful-visual-music/ I have a Reed friend with a progressive degenerative cochlear disease. She knew what was coming and immersed herself in the deaf culture. Interestingly, American Sign Language is derived from French sign language. I don't ASL but another deaf friend really appreciated speaking to them face on, enunciating, and not rushing so they could read lips which is an amazing skill. It's very rare to have a meaningful airline conversation. But one of my most prized was with a mother and her children returning from cochlear implant surgery. The older child asked soon after her sister's birth is she was deaf. I went to school in a town with a large deaf community and it is a rich and nuanced culture. I did a brief study of the neuropsych of deafness and deaf language cognition. So projects like Cyma Space interest me. You may be familiar with their light piano https://youtu.be/j31l9wHkRwg. One of them is at OMSI. They have brought work to the Winter Light Festival, PICA, local schools, and other art festivals. They bring their project nationally and their national momentum is building. They sponsor dance parties and travel to dance festivals which make a space for deaf people to experience the music through light and vibration. One of their current projects is with SubPac. The SubPac is a backpack with a vibrating bass transducer, a radio receiver, and batteries. The consumer SubPac is one channel and one vibrator. Miles is working with a 21 channel SubPac with 21 individually programed vibration devices. He's composed vibrations to go with music, which are transmitted to the SubPacs so deaf and hearing individuals can engage a rich sensory experience. There are only 120 of these devices in the world and Myles is scheduled to take them on tour, including to Rochester, NY, home to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and a large deaf community. Cyma offers a maker space in their workshop for deaf individuals to experiment with multi sensory art projects. One of their early sponsors is small Portland company Elumiglow https://www.yelp.com/biz/ellumiglow-lake-oswego. Cyma Space has an active YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/CymaSpace/videos If you are a deaf or hearing impaired family, make a connection. If you are a teacher, or a STEM teacher, they do workshops. If you ASL, their events are a great place to converse. If you have some tech maker skills, volunteer. Cyma Space is another of our Portland World Class small nonprofits.

Stopped by Urbanite looking for nothing but inspiration, and found it!…read more This store is really many stores. Each vendor displays whatever they're making, selling, or interested in. That could be pottery, clothing, art, furniture, tchotchkes, plants, or something else. Some get really creative with their booths, adding hanging decor or a fun layout. I had some sticker shock over pricing, but I'm sure there are deals to be found also. If I were looking for a special item I would certainly return here to search. And it's a great place to wander looking for nothing in particular!

This place has both new and used items. We buy stuff every time we go. There is vinatage furniture, new art, used art, cool little chakis, chairs, purses, jewelry, antiques, clothing and great vintage finds. So much more as well! Some things are unaffordable for us and some are more reasonably priced. We found beautiful wood shelves that are stunning and bought them. They were exactly what we were looking for. We got a cool industrial console table abd other fool finds. I have bought a few nicknacks that I like and new art when they had a sale. Street parking is easy to find plus they have a parking lot. There are bathrooms. I would say the one thing I dislike is everything is a final sale. I mean absolutely everything. So I have not bought certain things in case they could not work where we want to put them or we were might want to use. Also for gifts since they are not returnable and want to give my gift receiver's that option. Some staff are more helpful than others. So it depends on who is working. This a good place to go if you are cool with final sales. Theycdo have grsat stuff.
