I recently had an appointment at Watauga Orthopedics with Dr. Richard W. Duncan on December 10,…read more2024, to discuss some issues I've been having with my shoulder and neck. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't as positive as I had hoped. During my appointment, I explained my symptoms to Dr. Duncan and he had me do a couple of exercises to assess my strength. However, I struggled with one of the exercises, and instead of offering support or understanding, Dr. Duncan's comment, "come on now, you can do this," felt dismissive. His comment was very unprofessional, and I am thinking "are you kidding me?" Additionally, Dr. Duncan recommended a procedure, but after how he handled my struggle with the exercise, I definitely didn't feel comfortable with him performing any medical procedure on me. I left the appointment feeling uncertain about the next steps. He didn't clearly explain why the procedure needed to be done twice or why it was required by the insurance company, which left me feeling confused and without a full understanding of my options. Even the X-ray he provided had unclear medical notes that I couldn't make sense of, and he didn't offer any explanation to help clarify them. Overall, I felt that Dr. Duncan lacked empathy and a proper bedside manner, which made the experience uncomfortable. I would have appreciated more detailed communication and professionalism. It's important for healthcare providers to listen to patients and clearly explain medical processes. I hope that future visits to Watauga Orthopedics are handled with more transparency and compassion. BTW I haven't received a survey asking about my experience, but I have received several emails regarding my co-pay. And of course, I'll pay my co-pay because who wants or needs $50 going to collections. Sarah W.

She had great results both times, not even needing physical therapy for the hip replacement. He is efficient, easy to talk with and provides great surgical work. I have a continuing problem with my left knee which is going to need a knee replacement as injections have provided only short term relief. I will certainly choose Dr. Carver for that knee replacement surgery as I have much confidence in him and Watauga. I had a total shoulder replacement which was done by Dr. Wells of Watauga six years ago and his work was also perfect. After years of shoulder pain the shoulder replacement that Dr. Wells provided for me has been a great relief and improved my quality of life. From the office staff to the physical therapy that I received to the surgical teams who work with Dr. Carver and Dr. Wells, everything was top notch. My wife and I can highly recommend Watauga Orthopaedics. David P. Kingsport

When I first came in I was suffering from severe pain and would have spells where I couldn't even walk, I would just collapse in pain. I was pregnant and could not get X-rays however Dr. Merrill is very knowledgeable and good at his job and was able to help me manage my pain till I was able to get X-rays later on down the road. I remember being so surprised because I didn't even have to tell Dr. Merrill where my pain was, after some poking and prodding in a quick assessment of my back he was able to tell me what I was feeling and why, which is very impressive to me considering most doctors you have to SPELL IT OUT and play charades for them to even be relatively close to helping you figure out your problem.By the time you have finally gotten them to understand you mine as well just have done some research on the internet, fixed your own problem and saved yourself a trillion dollars. I have been many places in my life where it's like going to the mechanic, you go in with one problem and leave with three! At Dr. Merrill's office this is not the case, he is very well informed and truly helps you recover long term. His wife, Kathy, does an amazing job with message therapy as well, between the two of them I could not be more thankful for finding this place! I'm so glad I did not take heed to the bad reviews, I've seen and read them and almost didn't go to Dr.Merrill's office at first, I only gave it a try because people I know and trust said he was great. I personally conclude those reviews were written in immaturity, it would seem as though they might have been expecting care to be free? Also they seemed very emotional and not performance based. DO NOT be swayed by the bad reviews!! You will not regret going to Dr. Merrill, if anyone can help you on your journey to recovery, he can!
