My wife and I have been going to this dental office in downtown Chicago for many years, and I can't say enough about Dr. J., who is quite simply the best dentist I've ever had. She is very knowledgeable, highly professional and always up to date on the latest technologies and practices. I recently had the bonding on a front tooth redone. At first, it was causing just a bit a problem with my bite, but I quickly returned and she was able to quickly solve the problem with the minutest of adjustments. After seeing this dentist for 15 years, and having no dental issues, she failed me entirely. She wanted to have an oral surgeon pull a perfectly healthy tooth, and she ignored the endodontist report that there was nothing wrong with the tooth. She refused to refill my prescriptions for antibiotics and relieve my pain because I wouldn't allow the healthy tooth to be pulled while I waited for a second opinion from an oral surgeon she recommended to me, who could not see me for one month. She betrayed my trust or was inept, and so I have found another dentist. read more

I went to see Dr. Perlin most recently because I was having so much pain in my upper back right area. I even had a CT of my sinus and the ENT's reading did not reveal what Dr. Perlin's 3D xray revealed about my tooth and how it had impacted my sinuses. Dr. Perlin's office is not only COVID over the top prepared it has the high tech equipment to get you on the path of a pain free life. The staff is always so pleasant but I can't help to feel ripped off every time I go there. Most recently, I went for a cleaning and mentioned that a tooth they worked out is still in pain (it's been two years of back and forth with them on aiding this tooth.) The pain was caused by the dentist removing a metal filling bc it "wasn't appealing" and replacing with while filling in another area. I've let them know every.single.time. I go that this area is still in pain since the replacement. They take no responsibility for this. My last session, they told me I need a crown, costing me $1000 (including my coverage with one of the top covering plans). I couldn't believe I was instructed to pay for their mistake, and on top of that having a number of family members being quoted for $300-500 (not including insurance). To put the cherry on the sundae, they asked if I'd like a floride mouth rinse, which may cost me around $20. I assumed they were recommending a $20 bottle of mouthwash which I'd take home and use on a daily basis for days/weeks. I received one ounce.... ONE OUNCE.. of mouth wash and was told that was the $20 worth. WHAT?! If you'd like to be gouged for money, go here. They are SO nice but my bills don't get paid in smiles. read more

I had always gone to a dentist in the suburbs so I was worried about finding one in the city. I am so glad I found Smiles by Design. I've been going for a few years for just standard cleanings but recently I went to have some more dental work done. Dr. Jonynas couldn't have been more helpful with the entire process. The real reason I needed to write a review - I woke up on a Friday morning frantic with an issue with one of my teeth. I had my bridal shower the next day so I was even more nervous than I would normally be knowing that Smiles by Design is closed on Fridays. The worst dental experience I've had. My dental hygiene has been consistently good through the years, with dentist visits consisting of only bi-annual cleanings and regular x-rays. I scheduled a normal cleaning and was placed with Dr. Jonynas. She looked at my gums and said that they were in bad condition and that I needed to schedule a deep cleaning. I found this to be odd since I take good care of my teeth. When I asked her to perform a normal cleaning she said that she wouldn't do that since they could be sued for malpractice. Huh? This raised a bunch of red flags so I promptly left. I later found out this "visit" was billed to insurance, and all she did was put on rubber gloves and told me that I needed a bunch of expensive, non-insurance covered services. Hmm. I decided to get two different second opinions, each filling the role of a 6-month cleaning. Both dentists said my teeth looked fine and required nothing more than usual cleanings. As my mother once told me: "When some dentists go drilling, they aren't drilling for cavities - they're drilling for gold". read more

She gives you a no-nonsense evaluation of how well you take care of your teeth and lets you know what you can do to improve. I love coming here! Just got my lips done again yesterday and they look AMAZING I'm so happy with how they turned out. I can't wait to already come back because the staff and Dr are so sweet and friendly to me. Very comforting environment and puts you at ease for whatever you're about to get done ! Her total lack of concern for my well being as a patient in obvious distress was astounding! I felt as if Steve Martin's 'Dr. Scrivello' from "Little Shop of Horrors" was reincarnated and attacking my mouth with reckless abandon! And rather than apologize for her behavior, chose the cowards way out by accusing me of being aggressive and assaulting her which is an outright LIE! I didn't develop anxiety when going to the dentist until becoming HER patient! It is unfortunate that I must now seek treatment elsewhere as her team is absolutely amazing but she is reprehensible and a horrible excuse for a doctor. read more

They pushed me to get all of these additional services and cleanings all while telling me we've VERIFIED with your insurance it will all be covered, you will not have to pay a penny! Now I do have amazing insurance. Guess what.....month later BOOM stuck with a $1000 bill out of pocket. Sorry!!! Now it's my fault- then they take me to collections on my record for 7 years -even though they swore up and down to my face none of these services would cost a penny more. AVOID. read more

I feel so lucky to have found this dentist office! The first time I went to Smiles by Design was about a year ago for an emergency. I had recently moved to the city and didn't have a dentist. They took me right away and fixed my cracked tooth that day! I was leaving the country for vacation the next day and they were able to fit me in. They made me feel so comfortable and explained everything they were doing. They also made sure to explain all charges to me in detail. They even broke it down by the initial cost, what the insurance will pay for, and finally what I actually will owe in the end. They made sure I was ok with the cost and didn't do anything before they checked with me and made sure it was ok. They were amazing on such a stressful and painful day. I went back today for a cleaning. Once again everyone I encountered in the office was so warm and caring. The dentist greeted me with a smile on her face, went over my x-rays with me and explained everything she was seeing as she looked at it. All of the hygenists were extremely nice as well. You can tell that everyone in this office really enjoys what they do and the people they work with. I have gone to Dr. J for a few years now, but after reading these reviews I felt compelled to just give this one bit of information - I went in for an initial exam and was checked on the 1-6 cleaning list as well. I came out with nothing over a 3 and did NOT require a deep cleaning. And, I submit my cleanings to dental insurance. Not sure why they wouldn't have tried to fraud me into a deep cleaning. I probably would have gone along with it. I think Dr. Jonynas is just really particular, and wouldn't you want that from your dentist? I also got a filling replaced a couple of years ago and it was completely pain free and done within my lunch hour. I completely recommend her! read more

Unfortunately, the atmosphere is very unprofessional. The first time I walked into the office, the doctors and employees were having a team meeting in the open, behind the receptionist desk. They were being loud and laughing and watching an employee do pull-ups on a pullup bar. No one greeted me, and I waited at least 5 minutes to be acknowledged while the whole team goofed around. I got a routine cleaning and 3 cavities filled. They made me come in 3 separate times to get all the work done. Although the work I had done was adequate, I was charged more than what the dentist initially quoted me. I have not been back. I get a call about twice a month from the office while I am at work from a number that I am unfamiliar with, and they NEVER leave a message. This is very irritating and unprofessional in my mind. read more

It is clean. They are super friendly, and you can easily think you're getting good service but.... I left my lifelong dentist because I live far from him and Smiles By Design is close. I made an appointment for a general cleaning, only to be told that I needed deep cleaning because my teeth and gums were in terrible condition. When I mentioned my lifelong dentist visits and good brushing habits, Dr. J said that the problems she saw in my mouth are the cause for most dental lawsuits, because so many dentist fail to diagnose the problem in time. Her professional opinion was that I needed a deep cleaning. A deep cleaning would take several visits AND it would cost $1,100. She suggested also, that I buy a Waterpick so that I could properly clean my teeth at home. Finally, because she said I grind my teeth, she suggested I should get a night guard from them. Its cost would be $500.00. I sought a second opinion immediately. I took my x-rays and chart from SBD to Dr. Second Opinion. Dr. SO was unaware that I was seeking a second opinion. Despite being given the x-rays that were given to me by SBD Dr. SO ordered more x-rays, (no charge to me) because he said the ones from SBD were inadequate. He did the exam, and before telling me the results I explained why I was there and gave him my chart from SBD. The chart indicated that I had pockets ranging from 1-6. Of great concern were those ranging 4-6. He then re-examined me to see "if he missed anything". He explained that my SBD chart showed that I had advanced periodontal disease and at best, my teeth should be loose and at worse, they should be falling out. The Second Opinion... My teeth are fine, I have no periodontal disease, no pockets requiring treatment, healthy gums, no deep cleaning needed, no teeth grinding, no night guard needed. Dr. SO said he "would have loved to have me pay him a few grand to fix the problems SBD said I had," but he "would have to make things up and then commit insurance fraud to get paid". CORRECTION: In an earlier review, I indicated that SBD sells Waterpicks, I have since been told they do not. Further, I indicated that the fee for the deep cleaning was $1800. I have since been told that $1800 was the fee if I elected all recommended services. I believe that is correct and the breakdown of the fee was a misunderstanding. Finally, to clear any misunderstanding, I was paying for services, not my insurance. read more

I have been going to Dr. Jonynas for 20 years. Prior to my first visit with her, I had always had teeth and gum problem (with some nasty experiences). But after one visit I knew I had found my dentist. Before, I'd rather suffer through the drilling without anesthesia than have a needle stuck in me mouth; she is so skilled at it, I don't mind any more. The hygienist are also trained in basic periodontal work, I haven't had to see a specialist since. Over the 20 years in additions the numerous standard filings, I have had 2 crowns and cosmetic veneers. The work has been top notch and always in a friendly environment (and nearly pain free). Even now after I've taken a job on the East Coast, when I return to visit, I make sure to schedule an appointment with my dentist. read more

I went here to get a filling filled and they only replaced half my filling. I experienced terrible sensitivity to my tooth and after going back into the office twice to have them look at my tooth, they referred me to a specialist because sensitivity to hot and cold (and they told me I needed a root canal). Since I trusted Smiles by Design I made an appointment with the dr office that they referred me to. Before going to my appointment I called to verify that they accepted my insurance and they didn't. I then called around and found a great dentist that accepts my insurance, went in and they said that I didn't need a root canal and that the dentist should have replace the ENTIRE filling, not partially. Thank god I found this new dentist...it saved me the pain and money for a root canal!!! read more

This dentist told me that I needed 2 crowns, but after seeing 2 other dentists they both told me I didn't and was not sure why I was told I needed crowns. I'm a big fan of Smiles by Design. Everyone is very friendly - my dentist, my hygienist and everyone on staff. Believe it or not I actually enjoy my dentist appointments - can't say I've ever felt that way until being a patient of theirs. I like to catch up with my hygienist who I consider my friend. I have been coming back to Smiles for years now, and I plan on staying with them even though I no longer work in the Loop. They pay close attention to my health including a borderline cavity and my grinding issue (which has been brought to my attention many times over the years including my old dentist in Colorado). They have never recommended I get any work done that would cost me money other than routine visits. I appreciate this b/c I have seen the potential future cavity (X-ray) if I don't pay more attention to it and my grinding issue too, and if they recommended I pay for non-routine work, I would do it. Terrible experience! Had exam and was told by Dr. Jonynas that i had a cavity and needed a filling on the outside surface of my molar. She explained that my old filling on the top of the molar would also need to be removed because it was wearing down. She said that laser would be used. When i went in for the filling Dr. Jonynas did not even remember about the laser option until I asked. And even though, I told her if anesthesia was best option to proceed; she rushed and insisted on laser option without explaining. That should have been a red flag for me. She used some gummy thing to "desensitize" since during the filling I had pain. After I left, I continued to have pain with cold water, coffee, and when i chewed food. I noticed the filling was not filled in all the way; and can compare to an old filling on the opposite side which IS filled all the way after many many years. When I returned for her to check it out, she was unprofessional, rude, defensive, and would insist on that I came in that way. I said yes, i came in to get my cavity filled. She insisted that I needed more time, more gummy thing, and said my molar looked the same as the opposite side. She uses cliche phrases to protect her mistakes; and would not admit the filling is partial and NOT complete. I paid cash $228.00 for the filling which was NOT done right and than to have Dr. Jonynas rude and defensive when I returned to have her check it. I called and told her about her rude behavior and her response was condescending. She replied " Awww, I'm sorry you feel that way; I wear my heart on my sleeve". Obviously, someone that truly cares about their profession does not need to say it; and instead acts professional and treats her patients well. read more
