It is becoming a unicorn type event to find an independently owned store where the owner is actually running the place, talking to customers, and not charging absurd prices. I found the unicorn in Jonathan and SMASH. He knew I was just killing time with my son while we waited for my wife down the street, but he engaged the both of us with stories of toys, collectibles, the ins & outs of the toy business, and obscure histories to many of the toys on his shelves. However, I don't know diddly about toys. But my son, well, he's the kind of person who will be shopping at this place when he's my age. He can recite the entire catalog of Lego so when he said, "daddy, he has an original Boba Fett and that's a really good price", I thought he was just trying to get me to purchase something. And then the owner showed me how to find similar sold items (versus live auction ones) on Ebay. So he essentially found a way for me to tell if his pricing is fair. And they were both right - a rare item that was cheaper than Ebay. I love that the owner had smalls signs saying 'no jerks'. Who wants to spend time in a store full of jerks. Smash Toys is everything I wanted as a kid, and appreciated even more as an adult. I've never felt welcomed in comic book stores, toy stores, or video game stores like I do at Smash Toys. As soon as my wife and I walked in, we were greeted with what felt like a sincere welcome. I can't tell you how rare that is nowadays, so I knew we were in for a treat. The store is small, BUT there is a lot to explore. Every visit we each buy something for ourselves or a gift for someone. We usually do a few passes when we visit, which is actually fun because we spot new things with every pass, and it doesn't feel like anyone is breathing down our necks. Not feeling rushed means that we can actually buy things, but it also allows my wife and I to reminisce and share stories about our childhoods. The last thing I'll say is that the owner, Jon (sp?), is passionate and it shows. There's nothing worse than a snob in a comic/game shop, so I was really excited when I first asked a question and it was answered enthusiastically instead of trying to embarrass me. My daughter loves this store. They have a variety of new and used toys and action figures. The owner is a super nice guy. He gets to know his cusotmers, and is knowldgable and friendly. The pricing is fair. There is a good range for the products, so you should be able to find something within your price range. I buy alot of stuff on Amazon, but the experience of taking yor kid shopping in a real store like Smash and picking out a toy in person is a huge plus over buying online. read more

The owner, Jonathan, is very friendly and treats all his customers well, kids and adults alike. He has a huge selection of Star Wars action figures, both vintage and current. Lots of Lego, Halo, call of duty, hot wheels, funco pop, all sorts of 80s odds and ends. As a family, we like to bring Dad's old toys in to trade them for new ones for the kids. I was driving from Ohare airport when I saw Smash Toys and ever since then I make my weekly stops in! You can bring your toys and collectibles in for cash or trade which is epic and the store carries anything from Amazing Spiderman to Zany characters from the 60's-90's we all may have known and loved. The owner is so kind and knowledgeable about his stuff and isn't just a glazed over meanie that looks like they hate their job. Wandering through the store is a delight - the collection of toys brings back so many great memories. But the true highlight is the owner - how many stores do you walk into and the owner not only knows your name but also what you like? And not only that - he purchases your favorite toys in between visits and has them for you the next time you come! For example, we went a few days ago and as soon as we walked in he showed us his newest collection of Pokemon cards and Nerf guns - my son's current favorites. The owner is a wonderfully nice guy who knows a lot about the stuff he carries. I received industry leading service when I went to the store and it made me an instant fan. I'm heading back to pick up a few vehicles that I say eyeing when I was in there last week. He even gave a lift to the train after we found out it was going to take 48 mins for the next bus. Really cool place, fairly recently opened. Owner (Jonathan) is a really friendly guy. The store skews 80's, I would say, but covers a pretty wide range. Lots of Star Wars-related stuff, as well as Transformers, GI Joe, Marvel, Alien/Predator, Funko Pop, Barbie, and a host of others. Huge amount of action figures, which seem to be the main focus, although I saw board games, wall art, and a lot of other stuff.
