Their 'office dogs' attacked and killed our dog and bit my wife outside their business. They might be good accountants but they are also irresponsible. read more

These ladies are spot on the BEST! They did our last minute extension out of state Hawaii and in state Kansas taxes super fast and got us refunds! The best part is that they were fun to work with, super nice, and calm. It helped us to feel calmer about our tax stresses. The bonus are the dog friend in the office! We are so glad to have found Smart Spot and shall be back with them every year! Thanks Kathy and Eileen! Kathleen & Chris read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Most unprofessional people I've ever worked with. Complete lack of communication and zero customer service, when I couldn't get in touch with them, they actually used the word "nagging" in an email back to me. They take no responsibility for their mistakes or oversights. I live and work in KCMO and they forgot to do those until I called the day they were due. They also didn't complete 2021 taxes until the end of 2022, so now I'm the one upside down with what I owe. read more

We have getting our taxes prepared here for several years putting up with phone calls not retuned, emails not answered and short tempered responses. The final straw came when our taxes were not prepared on time which incurred unnecessary penalties and interest payments. Don't walk but run from these folks. read more

Been with these ladies for years. They have done a fabulous job not only for my personal returns, but also my corporation. Not only are they so approachable with any tax or accounting question, but also help you strategize to make sure your not overlooking anything. Most importantly.....these ladies know there business and keep up to date with new rules and regulations. If they it's so, they have some code to back it up. Dogs in the office, just an added bonus for me. Kiddos ladies!!!! Theresa Geving Farmers Insurance Farmers Financial Solutions read more

So, we are very disappointed with Kathy. It seemed so good at the start, but once we left the office after our first visit, it went downhill from there. Horrible communication, like would not (AND STILL WON'T) return emails or phone calls. Then we discover that she has put wrong information (like a social security number and an EIN number, two VITAL pieces of information) and even after we notify the office she won't return calls or emails. I don't know about you, but if I did this I would be moving heaven and earth to fix this, but she is completely ignoring what she did. If I could give a negative score, I would. We paid almost seven hundred dollars for this, and we are still dealing with her mistakes. Avoid at all costs. I will be filing complaints everywhere I possibly can until they fix this. read more

No one likes getting their taxes done, but SmartSpot makes it easy. Yep, I sound like a commercial, but it's seriously great! This was my third year seeing Kathy Burlison at SmartSpot and it's the same great experience every time. I first saw Kathy when I bought my house with my boyfriend and we were unsure how to file our taxes with the house. She made the process so simple and told us our best options. This year I went in and it only took 40 minutes which included catch up chit-chat. It's also completely affordable. I've tried TurboTax and H&R Block in the past - both were time consuming and frustrating experiences. Now, believe it or not, I actually don't hate or dread the process. Also, their office also has a great non-tax-like vibe - fun colors, very open. Highly recommend!!! read more

We have been having our taxes done here for a few years now and could not be happier! The ladies and the entire staff is so nice and helpful!! Very professional without being annoying since we know nothing about tax codes, lol. I can't imagine taking our business anywhere else!! If you need tax help I highly recommend this place! read more

I got to a point where my taxes were too complex to risk with at-home software, so I researched tax firms online and through Yelp...and I found Smartspot. Folks, it just doesn't get any better (or easier). Kathy and her partner know their sh*t, and not only can save you money, but they make money management easier. Kathy, with her knowledge, has saved us thousands over the years and helps me with odd questions and projections for changes in finance. I also appreciate the attitude and sense of humor they bring to their office...really refreshing and takes some of the stress out of a stressful time. The best part is they are reasonably priced and can work with almost any situation. Stop trying to do it all yourself and let the pros here work. I will continue to bring my finances to them, and will continue to recommend to all. You will NOT be disappointed, and you'll thank me...as will your checkbook (or debit card? pick your tech/finance reference). read more

I used to do my own taxes. Once it got too complicated (rental property, medical deductions, etc.) I went to SmartSpot on a referral. That was last year. And even though my taxes were relatively easy this year, I went back to Kathy this year because the experience was worth it. She's quirky but has an endless knowledge of tax law, and if she doesn't know the answer, she knows exactly where to go to look for it. And besides finishing my taxes in just 45 minutes, she spends time listening to me complain about my job, my house, the weather, what I had for lunch -- you name it. It's really a no-stress place to have your taxes prepared. I'd highly recommend them to anyone needing a new tax person. read more

Taxes were a little complicated this year (bought a house, lived in three states). I tried TurboTax but didn't pull the trigger, something felt off. Saw the peeps at SmartSpot had some good reviews, so I made an appointment. Real happy I did. Whole process took 45 minutes, learned a lot, and they increased my return by $350! Will definitely be back next year. read more

Had my taxes done with them for many years, then I became a part-time employee. They told me that they had trouble keeping receptioinsts because of the seasonal nature of the job. That should have been a red flag. Two of the oddest people I have ever worked for, strange quirks, like not being allowed to use post-it notes, getting upset if I approached their desks I o ask questions, admonished if I clicked a pen. Always had dogs in the office, which was fine, but one saved her paper towels from using the restroom to clean up dog messes and put them right next to my desk. The office was filthy, especially the kitchenette. Listened to phone calls and assumed they knew what the person on the other end was saying so would talk or yell answers to me. I couldn't make sense of what either saying. Didn't want to talk to clients And would be unhappy if calls were transferred. Took very little responsibility for things that happened, tending to blame others. Lots of emotional outbursts occurred - anger, crying, etc. When I got laid off during the first year of Covid, it was a blessing. Their work might be good, but not good as an employer. And I've heard recently that one of their dogs got loose at the office, bit a person and killed their dog on a walk. That was not a surprise to hear. read more

Taxes and laughs, what could be better? Came to see Smart Spot peeps last March after former accountant messed quite a few things up. They 1.fixed them all and got my business back on track and 2. I finally understood exactly how the IRS views self employed people and how to minimize risks. Also they explained how the laws had changed and if I did not change how I paid myself, it could trigger an audit--more than likely. I had not found this kind of sharing of knowledge before and its made me and my business more on it! For some reason, we have lots of laughs when I go in so that makes it all the better. A great smart, spot for people who need good tax help. read more

My experience with this business has been so frustrating and wasteful. I own a small business and rely on prompt service and advisement. I got neither. After a year of asking many questions I am left with the same questions and now a mess. Professionalism is definitely not a quality they stand by. After I fired this company, they sent a few hateful emails and are withholding documents for which I clearly paid to have done. If you do business with them be prepared to play the game thier way! read more

I am relatively new in town and needed a tax prep resource. I chose Smart Spot based on its good reviews as well as my general interaction with the company. I think it's a competent local business that takes the pain of tax preparation away. I do not mind paying for this service at all. Got my refund within a week or so! read more

I was worried about having my taxes done this year, I had 2 states to file, a move, college expenses, etc. From the minute I sat down with Kathy, I felt that she was there for me and that she took an interest in putting my mind at ease and making the process as painless as possible. Kathy is very competent, thorough, and kind. I would highly recommend SmartSpot, and I will certainly be going back in the future! Cannot say enough good things about them! read more

A simple slip of her finger marked me a "married-3" instead of a "Single-1" which is going to cost me $5,000 this year, and then tried to blame my employer! Never even apologized, just doing my part to let people know. read more

I highly recommend SmartSpot for all of your accounting needs. I have been getting my taxes done by them for years and have recommended them to a handful of people who now use them too. Because of the staff's combined knowledge, I never worry about whether my taxes are correct or not. The atmosphere is relaxing, which is welcome in what can be a stressful activity. read more

Horrified by the promises that were not kept and the unprofessional, down right rude behavior of both owners. Shockingly disappointing experience. I still can't believe the childish end to our business relationship. They left us hanging and refused to respond to professional requests for needed information to reestablish our bookkeeping with our new accounting professionals. Do not be deceived by their seemingly kind and fun loving demeanor. Once they can't fulfill their promises they completely cut you off and turn into complete tyrant adversaries who you won't even recognize. I fear writing this because their threats are so ugly and their tempers are so vengeful, but I wish someone had warned us before getting involved with this organization professionally. I hope it doesn't happen to you, but if it does you will have been warned if you read this. read more
