Higdon & Hale had a major data security breach this Spring that exposed sensitive customer…read moreinformation (including account numbers). Their response to the problem has been cavalier at best and has cost significant time and money. In communication with them, it exposed major security flaws, lack of reasonable financial protection (cyber insurance), and an unwillingness to provide adequate assurances that the systems and personal information are now secure. On top of this there are better accountants for the money. Steer clear of Higdon & Hale.

I know they cost a little more than they should, but they're close,…read morequick and convenient, which is the perfect option for me because even though they're probably not that difficult to do, taxes are one thing I don't have any patience to deal with. I just want them done. So, over the years, having H&R Block file my taxes, I usually paid between $110 and $150. I'm noting how much I paid because this is a key part of my review. I stopped in last night, met with an H&R Block consultant and watched her key in this year's tax information into an already set up computer template. She was kind, professional and quick. I think I was only there for about 25 minutes. Fantastic! Now for the problem... the consultant finished up her work and clicked over to the page showing what H&R Block's fees would be and that page listed a price of $259. I think my eyes came out of my head. So, I pressed a bit over the price increase. I mean, the consultant, as professional and thorough as she was, only typed numbers into a premade template and most of my information carried over from last year. After a bit of back and forth, a manager said that because of the tax law changes, the 1040EZ (might be a 1080, I'm not sure because I'm bad at taxes) form that I filled out last year doesn't exist and has been replaced with a longer regular 1040 form and since there is a brand new form H&R Block is charging over $100 for it. .... Nope. I recognize that a business can set its rates how it sees fit so it can stay in business. I also reserve the right to make my purchases dependent on the current marketplace. As such, I'm moving to another tax preparer. I will note that after a fairly intense discussion, H&R Block offered to reduce their fees to what I paid last year and I accepted. I'm also a little upset about how this played out and feel a little bit like they tried to play a bait and switch. Regardless, it's a done deal and I'm no longer a customer. If you've made it this far and you're still looking for a tax preparer, I recommend that you keep looking, but if you decide to move forward with H&R Block then you will need proceed at your own risk.

They offered me appt Friday eve and I emphasized I have a very small business and a rental property and wanted to make sure I'd be seeing someone qualified as not all of them have much training. ( my greatest fear). Arrived and I'm only customer, only one preparer who turned out to not speak or understand enough English to have a conversation! I'm stunned! I had to repeat things multiple times, couldn't even get her to understand I was a new client. I cud see she didn't understand the documentation I was showing her, then she kept pointing to her computer screen (which I couldn't read from a distance anyway) to prove to me for some reason that I was scheduled for a regular return not a small business and she wasn't trained. So I wasted a trip and very annoyed. They offered to reschedule me and fortunately I asked AGAIN for an approximate cost, the manager told me $800. So unprofessional, untrained and incompetent all the way around. Unfortunately what I was expecting from a big corporation.
