First time homeowner, though not naive to how homes work. Three days after moving in, sewage starts backing up into shower drains and out into the garage. Sam arrived a few hours the same day after calling. After snaking and jetting the pipes without much success, he then suited up without hesitating and dove into the 12" literal crawlspace to see what's going on. While underneath he took videos showing the age of the original drain pipes, and also how they were originally run incorrectly as one system, without slopes, and undersized. Meaning that decades of things slowly built up in the pipes, and since it is one connected system when one backs up they all back up. We agreed that we should replace all the original drain pipes. Sam and three other members of his crew showed up on time on a Saturday morning. All four of them proceeded to kick every single ass into the next county for six and a half hours. Cutting and removing all the old metal drain pipes, running new correct size PVC pipes, hooking everything up, and adding an external access for cleaning the drains if it ever happens. All while working in a 12" crawlspace. I really didn't need the expense only few days after moving in. Nobody wants to call a plumber, since something is going wrong. We had a major leak outside the house near the water meter. Water was gushing for days. EBMUD employee discovered the leak after recording the meter reading. We just got back from being out of town for 4 days. I called several plumbers for estimates hoping someone could come out the same day. My husband had spent many hours trying to fix our clogged sink in our 50 yo home. We tried snaking, vinegar and baking soda and Liquid Heat home remedies, to no avail. We called Sam on the weekend and told him our sad story. He was booked Sunday and said he could come out Monday at 10. Monday at 10:00, Sal showed up ready to get to work. He rooted with 75 foot, electric powered, snake twice, and then went back to the shop for a better snake and ran it until with a different tip to get the job done. He ran hot water down the drain, checked the outside sewer trap to make sure water was draining out of the house and we were done! We were so grateful to get it done and have our kitchen back. We seem to be the exception to the rule.... So many good reviews here, but our experience does not reflect this. Hired Sam & his assistant to fix an under sink leak, install a new dishwasher and a new faucet - Sam looked things over and wrote out a quick work order for right around 2 grand. He mentioned he could replace the rotted wood under the sink for an additional $1,200 - pretty high, but we figured let's just get it all done. $3200.00 seemed a bit steep, but he came with a lot of really positive Yelp reviews and we needed to get the job done with the holidays quick approaching so we went for it. Sadly, while he wrote things out on a sheet of paper and showed it to me, I did not make sure that he gave me a copy - something I would come to regret. The day of the actual work, they were here for a good 10 hours, so I can't fault them in that respect, but there were issues.... We were told that Sam was going to purchase supplies for the job, and he'd be gone for a few significant amounts of time. Among those "purchase" trips was one for plywood.... As you can see from the photos, the plywood was old and possibly being reused from a pile in his backyard - stained up, rough grained, and even a split in part of it. Then take a look at the install.... You can see that it was a sloppy as Hell job - not seated at the bottom of the cabinet frame as should be, bit sitting on top of the frame - and look at the cuts! Good Lord! If I wanted that I could have asked one of my teen-aged nephews to take a stab at it! COMPLETELY unprofessional work! At the end of the day, it was discovered that the dishwasher was missing the parts to connect it to the cabinet frame, so it was decided I'd contact the company that made the dishwasher and Sam would stop by once we had the parts in. Then he presented us with a bill for $4,600.... after an initial quote of approximately $3,200? WTH? Whatever.... At this point it's like write the check and get it all over with.... Then he tells me that rather than pay the whole amount, just cut him a check for 4K and I can pay the additional $600.00 when he comes back to secure the dishwasher. Like an idiot I went along with all of this crap, and then guess what? The parts arrived, I texted him THREE times they were here and asking when he could stop by, and I never heard a word from him..... As the months have gone by it sort of festered with me to the point I felt the need to write this review in hopes he doesn't rip other folks off like he did us. Crappy workmanship & price gouging.... I'd sooner hire Helen Keller to do a brain operation than hire Sam & Co. again - proceed with caution. read more

Just before sunset three nights ago, I discovered the cap on my main sewer "clean-out" access had blown off; water and TP were flooding out of the opening into my flower bed. How can you not give 5 stars to someone who fixed our plumbing problem on the same day at a reasonable cost? These guys are legit! We had a leak in our water line and water gushed into the sidewalk. We left a message at 7:45am and got a return call within 15 minutes. Somebody was supposed to come at 9am but nobody showed up. When we called to followup at 10am, there appeared to be a miscommunication on their end. We're willing to overlook it because they rectified it right away (other companies don't even bother to return a phone call!). Sam showed up around noon, spoke with my husband, gave us an estimate, returned later in the afternoon with the supplies he needed, and fixed the leak. He will return in the morning for a followup check. We also had him check a broken toilet. We decided to just have him replace it. You turn the shower on and adjusted the water tempt, but to your amazement and frustration, the water remained ice cold. I want to leave a quick and sincere reflection of my experience with Smart Rooter in hopes to give back to this community. I had a gross disaster in my bathroom, if you know what I mean. An event of this personal magnitude is embarrassing. (If you haven't guessed already, the problem area was the toilet.) I took a stab in the dark. I referred to YELP for plumber recommendations, hoping all the while that I wouldn't be duped. After fraternizing amongst all the excellent service remarks attached to said service company, my first and only call was to Smart Rooter and Plumbing. I was certain this choice was the brilliant choice. Sam, the business owner, gave me a time straight away, and as the day progressed a little, Sam called me to update me of exactly the goings on. You see, Sal was just a wee bit delayed in finding the proper toilet; however, like glorious clockwork, they showed up and started the process of exchanging the old 1980's water aggressive toilet model with the brand spanking new updated and beautiful (Imagine referring to a toilet as beautiful?) water-saving model. I needn't have worried about accessing Sam's service because in the end, it was the very BEST with a splendid value to my dollars spent. I just could not have asked for better. It was almost as if my late father was watching out for my best interest. The process didn't take long and I was completely comfortable leaving the work to these professionals, as I wasn't feeling well. I've used smart rooter in the past to replace 2 toilets and my garbage disposal. Today I needed them to come out because one of the toilets was constantly running. When I called I was told someone would come within a couple hours and he ended up coming in about 15 minutes! They replaced the valve, checked the other toilet and answered all my questions in under an hour. Unfortunately a few minutes after they left, the toilet started running again. After stopping to pick up some parts, they were back within the hour and got everything completely fixed. Listen tonight I had an emergency and didn't really know what to do. My downstairs toilet, bathtub & the sink in our garage was full on nasty brown water. I called Sam at about 11am because my kitchen sink wasn't draining properly. He was able to come the same day at 6pm and look at it, which was awesome since my husband had been working on it all morning and couldn't fix it. Turns out that there was a clogged pipe under the house that had cracked and was leaking. Sam said he could fix it but needed some parts, so he left and was back in about 30 mins with everything he needed to finish the job! By 8:30 pm I was able to turn on the dishwasher and get the dishes done that had piled up! Sam and his helper did a great job! We had a break/leak in our main water line - on a Thursday right before Labor Day weekend and a heat wave. Perfect combination! Yes!!!! NOT! I called several plumbers, the first few ones said that our home is outside their coverage area. Sam called, but I already had someone coming, so I said - thank you. However, the first quote we were given was just way too high, not a whole lot of explaining on what would be done. So, I called Sam and asked if he can still come out and he said yes! Thank God! Sam came out and explained the break, how the pipe installation could have passed the city inspection, and his recommendation for the repair. He gave us a written estimate - the others did not - and said to call him that same night if we decide to go with them so they can put us in the schedule. With the great explanation and deal, we decided to book with Sam. The following day, Sam and his crew came earlier than first proposed - which is perfect for us, because that meant getting the pipes and having water back on earlier. He showed the old pipe, explained what's going to be done, and said, "I won't bother you, I'll just let you know when we're done" because I had told him I was working. He showed us how the pipes looked, explained that the copper pipes they put in should last us 50-60 years and that they also had 10 year warranty on the work they did. We had a problem with our toilet. It was clogged. Next, we found that the bath-up drain was also clogged. Turning on the kitchen sink at the front part of the house, the water was backing up to the bath-up. We realized we had a bigger problem. The clean-out at the front of the house was spilling sewage water. We knew we had to call the professional. Sam from SmartRooter Plumbing responded quickly. He gave us a quote and came by in less than 30 minutes. This is on Sunday! I did not expect anybody to respond and be available at the same day! He quickly worked on the issue and cleaned the main sewer line outside and toward the house. The culprit was roots that had grown into our sewer line plus a wipe. He stayed until he was sure that there was no more clogging along the sewer line. Sam was very friendly and professional. He recommended that we replaced the main sewer line from the house to the street, because the roots will grow again into our sewer line in the future. Lastly, he pointed out that our main water valve in front of the house was not done right. It has galvanized pipe connected to copper pipe. It is rusty and old. It is still using the old style valve. He recommended that we have that fixed as soon as possible. We really appreciate Sam very much. We will definitely use his service again for any plumbing issue we may have with the house. read more
