Nice area for a landscape business. Plenty of space to have a good inventory of smaller plants as well as trees and shrubs. We happened to be looking for a specific shrub that was not carried (nor did any of the other landscape businesses). Still a place that can give you some good ideas if you are looking to spruce up your yard. Inside the building they have loads of houseplants and containers, so your indoor needs are also met. For the kids, there are several goats in a large fenced area that provide entertainment while you look at plants. read more

Immediately after walking through thier entrance I was impressed and pretty much sure I had made the right choice., ( I did ) Thier selection was great, the quality and condition of thier plants were what you would expect when shopping plants. We were looking for a small quantity of basalt boulders, and the gentleman treated us as though we were spending thousands of dollars. There is a lot happening here! Goats on site. Grasses for sale. Raspberries for $14.99 in multiple variations. Lots of trees. Planters. Latte stand. Snacks. Smart Gardens is so large that I definitely didn't have time to see all of it at once. I think it is so large that staff also don't always notice if you are there, so if you want advice or assistance it would make sense to check in inside first. During my visit I noticed some random plants were knocked over/or in rough shape. It made me a bit sad and the dying plants should have probably been placed in the "bargain" area or separated out because it made me nervous about the care for the plants. I'm sure it was just due to the rush of getting things opened for spring, but it affected my decision to purchase. I probably will just go to places closer to where I live, but Smart Gardens located on Argonne is worth checking out if you live in the area because they have a lot of selection and fair prices! read more

As we drove through Millwood and noticed the large sign on the sign of the road we weren't sure what the business sold. We took a rest stop because of the espresso and goat signs. It sounded like a fun little stop to explore. There is ample parking, a closed espresso shop, gift shop and entrance to gardens. As it was an afternoon weekday, we wandered freely through the gate to visit the cute goats and explore the gardens. I am learning to cultivate a garden and these gardens have it all. Love the variety of trees such as small beautiful Japanese Maples, cherry trees, evergreen, the list goes on. They offer a large staple of herbs and flowers lining the grounds in pots organized by type. There are also little ponds scattered throughout the grounds the trickling water drowning out the noises from the road. It's nice to be able to freely wander through the rows smelling and feeling the plants without pressure to purchase. We were there for over an hour and eventually went into the small shop to ask questions about plant varietals. Staff was very friendly and informative but not so much in your face. They were having a 20% off sale so we couldn't leave without purchasing hibiscus plants and a small maple tree. Staff person helped us load plants into our vehicle with a lot of care. Just less one star due to closure of the espresso shop. read more

Awesome place to go if you really care about the quality of your landscaping. We paid to have Nate to come out and help us figure out how to fill our garden bed so we have year round privacy-- but without doing a row of privacy shrubs. In less than an hour I had a complete plan to work from with options. He even advised on other parts of the yard-- what could improve the hardscaping and add interest in other areas. We bought one item so far and paid them to install the tree; it looks perfect and he was on time and super polite. Highly recommend! We bought a weeping crabapple from them. We were needing advise as it wasn't looking healthy. We called several times, but no returned calls! We stopped by one day again seeking advise. I stopped to make arrangements to get a tree. Took a long time to get help even tho the business was not busy. Very concerned neither of the staff who helped me had on masks. I have long preferred doing business here for landscaping needs. However, when I recently called twice to arrange for landscaping service regarding a pear tree replacement, they were too busy to help me both times. I will not be back. The first time I called they promised to call me back when things slowed down a bit that day. They never called, so I called back. The person, I will not mention her name, was rude and short. I will not utilize this business again. If this is how they are for the initial sale, I hate to imagine how they would be if there were any issues after the sale. Buyer beware. read more

Smart Gardens staff/tree expert assisted me in placing the tree in our yard -- what outstanding service! Stopped by looking for a cherry tree and some strawberry plants and happened to have our pickup. The parking lot was pretty full and there were quite a few customers meandering around the grounds. All employees looked like they were busy so we caught one as she was helping another customer to ask where the strawberry plants were located. She told us and while we had her attention asked about the cherry tree. She answered us with a very informative comment about the tree. I have read more critical comments on another site and would have been skeptical after reading those comments had I not been to Smart Gardens. Yes, we were not greeted by an employee but we did find someone to help us and she answered our questions without hesitation. The quality of the plants are great. We have planted both the strawberries and the cherry tree and all are thriving quite nicely. We will return. Thanks! read more

Everytime I go into this store I feel so welcome! The employees are very helpful and kind. I have become good friends with the gal that works here, I believe her name is Dawn. She is so friendly! Sweetest young lady. Everyone here is knowledgeable, I have even brought leaves of plants in that I couldn't identify and they helped me figure it out! The owner also wrote a fantastic book series, Dawn recommended it and I absolutely loved it! The goats are cool, too! Love it! read more

My review does not seem to show up when others search for this business... I was the first to review this business well over a year ago.... Not sure why only the positive review below is showing (that one seems to be the basis for their high rating as well, which seems like something fishy is happening when the neg review doesn't show). The following was my original review: I've never left a review before - have never felt the need. To be honest, I waited a couple of weeks and prayed over leaving this one, but I feel that it is so important to get out there so that what happened to me doesn't happen to others. My husband took me here to pick out a lavender plant for our anniversary. I'm disabled and find it difficult to leave the house most days, so I was in such a good mood -- however, I left this business in tears. I must have my service dog with me everywhere I go... he is essential to my every hour. After picking out my plant and returning inside to pay, I waited 12 mins at an empty counter before the lady (owner?) came in. She never apologized for the wait, but that wasn't what was so upsetting. She decided that as she was ringing up my purchase that she should spend the next 7 mins telling me her thoughts on service animals, including mine. How it was disgusting to see them in stores, especially places like target or Wal-Mart with grocery sections. How my dog and I should not be allowed into restaurants and that she supported those business owners who refused service to disabled people and their dogs. Near tears, I explained that I had a right to as normal a life as I can achieve and that is made possible only with my service animal. She said "Well, we ALLOW them in here, but then we allow all dogs." When my husband pointed out that the law supported us, a male who was in the back (perhaps her husband/co-owner?) came out and stood very close to my husband and me to try to intimidate us. We quietly took our plant and left. This is happening so often... the discrimination against the disabled. It makes me dread leaving the house and adds an extra layer of difficulty in an already intensely difficult existence. I know that there is a terrible rash of "fake" service dogs out there - which is more horrible for those of us with legitimate need for a service animal than it can ever be for the few business owners that have to deal with it. That is absolutely no excuse to discriminate against us and break the ADA guidelines. What exactly happened to just being human and kind? I sincerely hope that I caught this business on an off day. Regardless, the disabled and those who know/love a disabled person should perhaps think of spending their money elsewhere read more
