You won't find a butcher here, but they do have freshly packaged meat (as well as frozen). When I recently moved to Paso Robles, I envisioned myself perusing the many farmer's markets, local bakeries, and butcher shops for my weekly culinary endeavors. Never, did I ever think I'd be shopping regularly at a Smart and Final, and actually like it. Okay, it's not fancy. They do however, usually have almost everything I'm looking for. Their produce is great - awesome prices, local and fresh. The meat selection could be better, but it's more than adequate. They have GREAT prices on regular grocery items and the BIGGEST Frank's Red Hot Sauce I've ever laid eyes on (guilty pleasure - I put it on A LOT of stuff). However, they are missing a deli and a bakery. The staff are usually pretty good - asking in the aisles if you need help finding something. Today my cashier had kind of a shitty attitude. Not friendly in the least. I'll let that go, as usually everyone is nice. Also, in my many times of shopping here, it's always been Covid compliant. Masks all around and very clean. read more

so this store is so cluttered that it is so hard to move about while you are shopping. There is always tons of stuff in the aisle for display so only one cart can get by at a time and also for stocking they bring tons of stuff out and just leave it there. I would not recommend shopping at Smart & Final because when you get home and look at your receipt you will find out that you were charged for more than you purchased. I purchased quite a bit of fresh produce and they charged me more bundles of radishes, head of lettuce, & bundle of fresh spinach. These items are not by weight. They are rung up at the register as bundles or eaches. How could anybody make that mistake. Putting my trust into them was my mistake. The cashiers are so friendly. I quickly found everything I wanted. I found the staff to be patient and helpful. I asked a young man where 3 different things were. After I'd agreed two of them, I was surprised to find them standing beside the third item with his arm out like, "Ta da!" My shopping experience had already been memorable but what came next is what made me write this review. You see I was at Smart and Final buying camping supplies. 24 hours later out in the woods is when I realized I didn't have my wallet. Ran in to grab a few things. After being there for about 15 minutes and multiple employees saw us (not wearing masks) the manager found us and told us we had to wear masks to be there. I have a medical condition and told him that and his exact words were "then you have to leave". He was rude and didn't offer another way for me to shop ( like delivery). I am not a fan of smart and final in general. Some of the items are reasonably priced and a lot are way to expensive. This particular location has a nice selection of meats and veggies. They're only open until 10pm which is a little early, don't count on coming here for a late night emergency run. There is always a long checkout line no matter what time I come in. It's crazy !!!! I am impressed enough with Smart & Final to consider myself a repeat customer, but not impressed enough to consider this place my go-to grocery store. Mainly because sometimes their 'deals' on non-bulk items reeks of Albertson's version of 'deals' and I'd rather go to Food-4-Less. What's impressed me the most is the quality, variety and selection of fruits and vegetables. It's not a very large section of the grocery store (like most other grocery stores), but it's abundant. They have really good deals on dates and almond butter (but good luck trying to find them!). Another thing that impressed me was customer service. While not always the friendliest, they are attentive and keep the lines moving. In my experience, the long lines here move fairly quickly. Unless you come in at high traffic times/holidays then expect it to be a bit of a longer wait. The store is like a miniature Costco without the exclusive membership. By miniature I mean: really tiny meats, bread and veg section but quality, variety and selection are obviously their key focus. I knocked a star for the absurdly uneven aisle layout. Some rows are much more narrow to navigate through than others. The lighting is rather dim on certain aisles which is not aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. Also because they don't offer Diet Pepsi and I feel like there is something incredibly wrong with that (says the Diet Pepsi lover). Oh, and good luck with parking. My first thought is that I am impressed that its much nicer than a regular Smart and Final, but not quite a full grocery store but darn close. In the remodel from Scolari's it appears they left some things undone. The floors need to be fixed and look dirty. It's a great start. I hope they improve on it. read more

OK, I like to start out with negatives so I can end on a positive note. So let's get started. The produce is quite wilted considering how often it is watered. I bought a bag of sesame sticks from the "help yourself" section and when I got home I realized they were already stale. These are nothing compared to this place's most imposing problem. The line's in this place are rediculous. Why in the world would you have 10 registers and only have 2 open on a Friday night!? Seriously, North Korea is more efficient than this! (it's a propaganda joke) On the positive side, however, there are a few redeeming qualities. The fresh roasted chickens they have here are to die for. I wouldn't be surprised if they served them at feasts in Valhalla! they are super tender and have just the right amount of seasoning. my favorite part is when I bite a fresh peppercorn and the flavor explodes on my pallet. There are some good deals here every so often. Just tonight I found some Progresso soups for 89 cents a piece, (They normally go for around a buck fifty), and just last week I got a pack of 32 mini quiche for a Halloween party for just 8 bucks. (I ended up burning half of them because I got distracted but that's beside the point) In the end, however, the staff is mostly friendly, while some of them have the personality of a soap dish. Nothing, however, compares to my fear of not being able to pick up one of those decadent chickens because I'll have to wait fifteen minutes in line to take it home after a long day at work. I see my risk of COVID proportionate to the time I am exposed indoors to people who are not covering their nose or who are not wearing a mask at all including staff. When it takes you 30 minutes to checkout for what should have been a 3 to 4 minute checkout and a line that goes all the way around the store, you have just greatly increased my risk. I went shopping after a long Sunday to get some things for dinner, my husband and twin daughters were with me. Of course there is only two check out lines because they never have more then that! Ugh.. Anyways I get to the line and my casher named Alisa is hella rude!! She is looking down with a stank face I try to get her attention because I have a discount card but I wanted it to be swiped she completely ignores me until I make a sound of "I'm still waiting" then she scan it, then slams the scanner down in front of me. By then she got the attention of one of my daughters and I say that's rude and I just keep on bagging my groceries and try to get out of there as quick as possible! Her vibe are bad! As a previous cashier I know that you don't take your anger out on your customers but obviously Alisa needs to learn that! I've held off on this for way too long... Not only is the produce usually past its' prime (and sometimes potatoes are covered in what appear to be fruit flies as they rot), but twice in one week the registers failed to reflect the sales price on advertised products. Yes, I got back in line the second time after checking my receipt, and they refunded the difference, but what a chore...and how many of us check pricing on every item on our receipt? We really go here because of the location since we live out on Adelaide. The selection is just OK and the prices are OK depending on what you purchase. The parking lot is and always has been miserable going back to the Lucky Market/Scolari's days. They seem to have minimal staffing for checkout and weekends are particularly bad. On Holiday weekends this place is super packed and the parking lot is a combat zone. Don't expect much customer service either! Again, the only draw for me is the location. read more

I have tried 11 times to pickup the 1.75 litre of captain Morgan rum. Each time, early AM or just before a weekend, there is no captain Morgan. It's not a major issue, they have good prices, but never have the specific item. I have approached management who gives me the confused look, and then tell me they can order it for me. I Placed an order, and still nothing. I've had to stand in long lines, while I observe management and clerks visit with each other and pay no attention to the long lines. This store is the closet for groceries on the west side of Paso Robles, management needs a wake up call. read more

Never have I ever been able to complete everything on my list. There were rotten apples with squissy bruises and flies attacking the gross fruit and big bag of lettuce I wanted was expired. Watch for the expiration dates. IT HAPPENS MORE THAN NOT!! On a positive note the Smart and Final on Creston is a whole different experience just wish Spring Street could be the same. The checkers look really unhappy and dissheveled. This place always has huge lines and seriously the slowest checkout process imaginable. Also be weary of "sales" on meat and you see a lot of blood in the package. Literally a pound of the weight your paying for will be just blood. I weighed it out on my scale at home and just accounting the chicken it was about a pound less for what I paid for. read more
