Lived here for my entire life and have nothing but great things to say about this place but for the first time, I've had a rather unpleasant experience. I understand not being in the mood in the morning, especially when you have to wake up early and work hard. But when a customer is waiting for you to stock up (especially when you take up the entirety of the shelving area), you ask them if they need something and they say they were waiting for you to finish and don't want to get in the way, I don't think they should be met with hostility and muttering under the breath with things that probably don't need to be repeated here. My wife and I were in Carpinteria for a few weeks in the summer of 2023 and this grocery store was a half mile walk from the place we were staying. It had a great selection of everything we needed including beer and soda and produce like celery. I learned a new dip combination too. Fat free Greek Yogurt and salsa from those big 1/3 gallon jugs. Cur up some celery and you are in business for a healthy and crunchy snack. The had Crystal Light packages for the pitchers, which I made often to cool off from our four mile walks on the Carpinteria Beach. Great service, the bathroom does have a lock that you need to find an employee to open, but that was about the only downside. Beer was expensive but that seems to be the case all over California grocery stores. Great local grocery store in a small town. read more

This is absolutely the worst run supermarket I've been to and as a result they attract customers that wouldn't be tolerated elsewhere. And they don't seem to care. They have a 20 item checkout line that is only open about a quarter of the time. But when it is they don't enforce the 20 item rule. The last time I was there they had a customer get in line with some items while their husband was doing the rest of the shopping. She then expected the people who were behind her in line to wait until her husband brought the items over for checkout. Today, my last day there, the woman in front of me had two screaming kids and the boy was shaking up the drinks that were at the checkout counter. Neither the mother not checker said anything to the brat child. The customers who are inconsiderate or have brat kids so there because they know most other stores won't tolerate that type of behavior. I have not run into that at the other supermarkets in the area. I have complained many times and they don't seem to care. I am not a big shopper there but I won't be a shopper there at all after today. You cannot see sure that what you buy has not been played with by one of the customer's precious little kids. Sadly they are the closest market to my house but not worth the money or time saved shopping there. Goodbye. read more

We had a cake made at the bakery for a baby shower. The baker there was amazing and she was great to work with! We showed her our design idea from Pinterest and she turned it into real life! So talented! We'll be ordering more from her in the future! read more

Smart and Final has a good produce section with some organics. Organic eggs were just $3.99 a dozen. There are also bulk grains. Frozen veggies were pricey. There have large quantity meats and salads. S&F has whole aisles filled bulk paper goods like plates, cups and napkins. Overall prices on basics seemed good but be sure you know your price point. read more

So I came to this place & was initially happy with my purchases until I got to my car, unloaded & found a $2.50 item missing. I walk back in to see if it was left on the counter by the bagger by mistake. The manager says she had to look at the tape. Well, I've never had a manager say that. I was taken aback but I waited, cuz I had searched my bags & car thoroughly before going back to the store. After waiting like 10 minutes, which at this point I felt like saying f-it & leaving, She comes back to say the item was placed in one of my bags. I didn't argue cuz I was fed up by this point. I went back to my car drove home, unpacked & NEVER found that item that was supposedly bagged. I guess I won't be shopping at this Smart N Finale when I'm in the area. read more

The other day I walked into my local Smart and Final ready to buy some of my usual groceries for a family BBQ. I was waiting in line at one of the check outs, the young lady who checked me out was such a nice girl, great service. Until, I witnessed horrible mistreatment by one of the managing staff towards one of the employees, the manager, a middle aged woman, came over and made a whole scene. I was distraught by her kind of behavior, please keep interpersonal conversions in private. Have you no manners or respect towards your employees and the people around you, it made me feel uncomfortable. Shameful behavior by the people who run this establishment. Problematic and immature, I recommend people go to Albertsons instead. read more

There are a few products that are cheaper here than at other stores but overall the quality of the products is scary. I purchased $9.00 of ice cream that turned out to be totally rancid, spoiled and literally had ridges and chunks of water turned ice due to the product having been repeatedly thawed then re-frozen. It stunk. Disgusting. I had to toss it. Found my receipt. Went back to the store, and they refused to make good on the product despite having the receipt in hand. No notice in the store requires the return of disgusting, stinky product. Why would I hold on to filth in my car for a couple of days since I don't live next door to the store. I went back as soon as I could. Judy is a nasty racist manager. This store ripped me off because I don't have the right skin color. I want nothing to do with Smart & Final. They only rip you off. A few days ago I was grocery shopping at my local smart and final and I went through this young ladies line, very good customer service and she is very polite and nice. Until I noticed a supervisor walk up to her register and was being very disrespectful and rude towards her and I was feeling uncomfortable for the way the supervisor was treating her. I wouldn't recommend going to this store for the mistreatment and disrespect that the management gives this employee. I would recommend going to Albertsons. Please treat everyone at your store with respect it's not that hard. If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all. That is all. read more

The produce department is better than most Smart & Finals, the meat department has everything you need for a beachfront BBQ or Thanksgiving feast, and -- if you are entertaining -- you can buy supplies and food in quantity at prices close to what you would find at a Costco. Props to Smart and Final for hanging in there during Covid. For the most part, I can find what I need at a good price. Many things a lot less expensive than other stores. This Smart N Final has most of the same food as the Albertsons in town including fresher produce (in my opinion) and some additional bulk items that my family likes. Most importantly, it has WAY better prices for the same exact groceries. I don't know why anyone in Carp would want to shop at Albertsons over Smart N Final. Before this store opened I would typically go to Whole Foods over Albertsons because if I am going to spend so much, I may as well get better food. I have never been to an Albertsons as expensive as the one in Carp. Anyway, I am grateful that Smart N Final opened and that we finally have a reasonably priced grocery store in town. By the way, to correct another review I saw, this Smart N Final does have organic tomatoes and plenty of other organic food options (it's not Whole Foods but it is at least as good as Albertsons). Plus if you want high quality organic foods then you can easily stop at Pacific Health Foods which is a block away. Another reviewer may have had a bad experience when the store first opened (I could see they were scrambling a bit to get everything organized and stocked last March) but, from my experience, they are incorrect about Albertsons being less expensive for the vast majority of items. I actually went through Smart N Final during its opening week and took pictures of prices to compare with my usual grocery list. read more

Nope. I was kind of excited that SOMEthing was going into the old Von's location again. But I was so disappointed when I visited it last week. They'd only been open a couple of days when I visited but they had some sausage that was already out of date by four days. I hate math but even I can figure out something was wrong there. A very small organic section that had a lot of the same items repeated (two types of iceberg lettuce were organic, for example, but no organic tomatoes.) The prices weren't good. In fact, they were more than if you shopped for the same items at Vons or Albertsons. I think you can be easily fooled with bigger, bulk items but Costco is still cheaper than some of the stuff I saw there. For example, a daily special that was highly advertised for a dozen water bottles was actually three dollars cheaper for the same amount and same brand at Albertson's later that day. And I don't consider Albertson's that cheap! If you want a mop, sheet cake and 260 otter pops, check this place out. As for the whole "extra" part that is supposed to mean edible food, all I can say is check your wallet AND check the product for expiration dates! read more

I am very disappointed and upset . I forgot my wallet in one of the shopping carts, I called the next day asking if they had my wallet ; the person on the phone was rude and said they didn't. A week later I was doing some grocery shopping I decided to ask once again . The cashier ( I wish I remembered her name) asked someone to check , they immediately gave it to me . I was so excited to have found my wallet with my cards in there but then realized my cash was missing . The fact that I had called and was told the wallet wasn't there and then had gone in to realize it was there but found my cash missing was very disappointing. I don't want to blame employees, but I hope Smart & Final are checking their cameras . read more

I wish this store was better. As other folks pointed out, the employees are really unfriendly and not very helpful. They don't seem happy at all and it shows. They have a good selection on some items but not on others. I shop here when I need to pick up items I forgot at another store, but I don't enjoy shopping here at all. read more

But I was really won over today when I asked Israel for help. They had an item listed on the rack that hadn't been restocked yet. When I first heard about Smart & Final replacing Vons I was very disappointed until I shopped there. Now it is my favorite store. I live in Ventura and work in Carpinteria so it is convenient for me to get my shopping done before I get on the freeway. With their wide variety of product, I no longer need to go to 3 different stores to fill my shopping list. Lots of organic produce and bulk. Nuts of every variety and household cleaning and paper supplies. Shrimp. Check out the frequent deals on frozen shrimp. I am a fan of low prices replacing more bling. And when I need help the staff always drops what they are doing to go to the back to look for more shrimp, or help me find something, etc. read more

This store is awful!! Rude checkers and no one has knowledge of what they sell and where located.. They treat you as if your lucky to shop there!! REALLY how ignorant of their employees. I love Smart and Final Extra! I go there all the time. But today as I was doing my usual shopping I noticed one of the employees was given a bucket of water and a rag to clean the food shelve surfaces. I do not think that is the best option. It is probably best if one uses a water spray bottle instead, just so that it isn't against safety regulations. Hope that Smart and Final is smart to resolve this problem I saw today. Thanks read more
