Thanks to the fabulous Coronado Smart & Final staff- the 2 staff that tried to sort out a malfunctioning check-out system ..... so helpful and so nice! I ended up getting double charged for my groceries which I discovered when I got home. (Through no mistake by the staff) . I called and spoke to the great female staff person who was trying to help me out in the store. She had Naoia (? Manager) who was very helpful & was able to cancel the extra charge to my credit card. It is not often you find people who go out of their way to make one customer happy - they could have told me to work it with my credit card company - they did not. I always wondered where people who lived here got groceries as I hadn't seen a large store. This spot sneaks up on you but is loaded and well-stocked with items at great prices. We stopped in for snacks and basics and I was impressed with the fresh bakery items and flowers. Quality things here and friendly cashiers. read more

My "go-to" place for all my familys food needs. I bypass the one in North Park because the Coronado store is 100% more satisfying. Fruit and produce are always fresh or being restocked. Many choices of the "mak down" rack when you enter. Fresh flowers are always available. The wine selection is excellent. Their markdown area in the meat department is usually my first stop. Staff are friendly,efficient and never too busy to accomodate a question. Definitely worth the drive and extra effort getting on/off the island. read more

Store is clean and well stocked. I gave it 3 stars because of the bathroom. There is one bathroom that has both a stall and a urinal. In other words if you take your young child into the stall you risk running into someone using the urinal. The door needs to have a lock on it so that only one person at a time is allowed into the bathroom. read more

They have a few options but nothing extensive , pre made food looks bad except the roasted chicken , fruit options are just ok . This place is good as it's walking distance from my resort but wouldn't come here otherwise. Things were priced reasonably but limited options read more

I drive by this store every weekend on my way to volunteer and am always struck with how empty the parking lot is. So if you like a ghost town then check out this location on Sundays. The store is packed with whatever you might need or not need for that matter. The thing is you can't be to specific in what you want. For example yogurt. You can get vanilla flavored but maybe not in your first choice of brands Prices are ok, and they had a sale on my most favorite water ever so I'm proud to keep hydrated and save a buck! They also have large roast chicken for $6.99 and that came in handy since BCBP was ill and I'm not great at cooking. I wish they had more veggie items on offer in their frozen food section but in all the store is not the most awful place to get your shopping done. read more

Sadly this Smart & Final has gone downhill since August. The produce has been awful (rotten collard greens, slimy carrots, dirty onions), the dried goods are occasionally open, and the drinks are dirty (soda, etc). They also take forever to restock. We really liked this store before these past few months. It has been our go-to for years. Edit: been a week since this review and they still haven't restocked certain items. Ridiculous. read more

I liked Albertson's way better, but . . . This Smart & Final Extra is a nice, well stocked, very well organized store. As other S&F's it sells just about everything, but specializes in larger sized containers and quantities. The prices here seem higher than the South Bay Plaza store in National City. I know grocery store pricing varies with the neighborhood, and Coronado is generally pricey . . . So prices may be higher here. That said, S&F Extra is a welcome addition to Coronado. I do miss Albertson's though. read more

This grocery store isn't so bad! It is located quite close to the Ferry landing so some would even park in the lot. I wouldn't really suggest parking here because you will have to pay. The staff is pleasant whenever I come here so far. I really like the location of the store. I am satisfied with the pricing and food choices here. The grocery store is quite neat and well stocked. I didn't have trouble navigating my way around. They have some pretty good sales too and the flyers are located at the front of the store, if I'm not mistaken. I would often take my work break during the evening rush hour here and although they have some long lines, I think they are decently staffed during the few times that I've been here. I think this place has a potential if they decide to have a deli like at Von's. I think I've had coworkers who bought roasted chicken here and it was quite good. I've tried their sushi but as expected in most grocery stores that make sushi -- don't buy them! Haha! I will come back though because the store is located near work. :) read more

NOT Happy! Coronado is a town with a sophisticated palate... One of my favorite things about living here. This store is disappointing at best and odd. It makes no sense for the area. A Trader Joes would be perfection! Albertsons was just fine. Not happy ever since they closed. read more

If you don't want to deal with the parking lot near the ferry landing shops, for about $10 or so, you can find a great spot in the back of this lot and even grab some drinks and snacks inside before heading to the bay. I'm personally not a fan of Smart & Final in general, but the store itself was pretty clean inside and we had no issues grabbing some water and snacks for the road. Would definitely come back here for the parking alone though. read more

I miss the Albertsons at this location. But smart & final is very convenient for where i work because we would need large amounts of waters and gloves or cleaning products. It's freezing in there but very clean. I wish staff would smile more. And I also wish they had a deli. read more

It's a good go-to place on the island. Lots of fresh veggies cheaper than at Von's and you can almost always get a good deal on ice cream and frozen items. I really like their bulk bins for picking up nuts, oats and sweet treats at a reasonable price. Everyone I've encountered there, from produce department to checker have been helpful and friendly. read more

Once again I made the mistake of buying produce at this store. Because I was in a hurry I stopped here rather than Vons and bought some produce. The bag of baby cucumbers I bought were opened the very next day and every single one in the middle of the bag were rotten. I can't understand how this store knowingly and repeatedly puts rotten produce out. My fault for trusting and buying there again when this has happened to me before but this is the last time. Save your money and go to Boney's or Vons for your produce. The only reason to shop here is for non-food items. read more

I went there a couple days ago and had a strange, unpleasant experience. As I approached the check-out lanes, I heard a cashier say "lane 2 is open," so I went to lane 2. But as I did that, the cashier said "you were not first." First, I had no idea who was "first," and furthermore it seemed strange that an employee would insult a customer. This is nuts, and they won't see me there again. From the lack of cars in the parking lot, I expect they are not doing well anyway. read more

The big plus for this store is the friendly and helpful employees. The small selection of fresh fish is surprisingly good. Sales on premium ice cream and good wine are frequent. The quality of the produce, both organic and not, is reasonable. Otherwise, this is an uninspired store.Please, Trader Joe's, come to Coronado! read more

I used to LOVE coming to Albertsons when I was on the island and was very sad to see it had been taken over by 'Haggen' or whatever. So much that I actually never went in haha. And even then, It was only under that name for a couple months before all the 'Haggens' closed down in Southern California. But since, I've actually come in to Smart & Final a couple times and they're doing it right! The store is always super clean and well organized. If you're in during a weekend, they'll usually have someone offering samples of something (I've had energy bars, trail mix, sports drink and even sushi samples haha). The employees are friendly and if there's staff, will open a register if one seems too backed up. I don't ACTUALLY grocery shop here, but for the things you need as a visitor/tourist (snacks, drinks and even alcohol lol) everything's great and priced regularly, which I was pleasantly surprised about, seeing as they could raise the prices on stuff being on the island. All my experiences here have been pleasant and even though I miss Albertsons, Smart & Final has been doing a good job :) read more

A wise man once said "a millionaire does not become a millionaire by spending money." Hence Smart & Final here. All the same stuff you could get anywhere else, just cheaper! Quite frankly the opposite of the Haggen that was in its place. Plus this is so much nicer inside. Everything is clean, bright, and organized, though the aisles are a bit narrow. Not to mention a wide selection of items that other stores don't have like bulk items. All in all, a net gain to Coronado. read more

We rented a beach house for the weekend and this was the closest grocery store. The prices were reasonable and they had everything that we were looking for. I bought a 1.5 liter of Malibu for $16.99...the check out was quick and the employees were friendly. read more

Was also told that she would send me a gift cert. for the cost of the meat plus...never got it (3 weeks past). If you choose to shop this chain of stores, be advised: examine the dates closely! Long-time Coronado resident with very mixed comments on the new store. I've been four times now, so I waited to give it a chance before writing a formal review. Pros: Great selection of pay-by-the-pound grains, snacks, etc. Great-looking produce and organic choices of items they carry but...(see cons) Clean, bright, pretty-well organized, beautiful store Carries some of the items its predecessors did not have Convenient, great prices for most staples like milk, bread, eggs Large spice section, but...(see cons) Floral section has really good prices and fairly nice selection Great prices on most items they DO carry Meat section is pretty nice, but...(see cons) Baked goods section is pretty nice, but...(see cons) Love the ready-made tamales (great from the microwave)! Cons*: Does not carry all the main groceries I go to a grocery store for, so it causes me to go to yet more stores anyway (like Boney's, another major grocery, etc.). Therefore, I mainly use Smart & Final for the above-mentioned milk, eggs, bread-type emergencies instead of my main grocery stop. Frustrating because I have to go out of town to get what I need (rather than visit 'dirty Vons' on Orange Avenue). Bulk paper goods way more expensive and less quantity than Costco. Coronado really doesn't need a bulk store (most shoppers go to Costco or Dollar Tree for those items). Would rather see that space used for items, more selection of like items people use on a regular basis (see below comments): Produce: would like to see more of a variety of items like broccoli rappini, much larger brussel sprouts, etc. Spice section: variety is lacking. No smoked paprika, for example. Toiletries & Baby products: sorely lacking. For example, one deodorant in one fragrance. One or two shampoos and conditioners. One type of eye drops. Lip balm? Selection of feminine products is sorely lacking No on-site butcher or fresh deli meats cut to order No on-site baker to speak with By way of example, I would personally like to see the following items carried in-store on a regular basis: Peter Pan Peanut Butter Secret Deodorant - Sheer Clean fragrance Aveeno baby wash products (in several choices) Shampoos & Conditioners (Nature's Gate) Contact lens safe eye drops and Contact Lens Solution (several varieties). How about bulk-item ClearCare? I like this store because the employees are very pleasant and helpful.Note, prices are sometimes higher than you would expect for a discount store. Kudos to Carolyn in the bakery dept who is so sweet and helped me when I called ahead regarding a pie. Some people think they are too important for a discount store and want fancy,overpriced crap. If that's you, this is not for you. I think this store fills a need on Coronado. read more
