Hey guys, The Big Gorger here. Been away for a while and finally came back to gorging. Wanted to stop by Boneys after a lovely day at the beach. Went to the deli section to place our order and can I ask a question. Does it really take 30 minutes to make a sandwich? It seemed like the workers were working at snail speed. Everyone had a stank look on their face and looked very unhappy. Not saying you have to be bright at the job but it felt very off putting. After standing in line like we were at in an amusement park, finally got our sandwiches sat down and enjoyed them very much. The Island Baja has the perfect amount of ingredients in the sandwich, tasted so fresh and so delicious. The tomato, cucumber, sprouts, baja mayo sauce, avacado and chicken was such a good combo and it wasn't to filling which is perfect. Mrs. Gorger got the tuna sandwich and I personally don't like tuna but that HIT the spot. It was very tasty. Overall, food was amazing and would definitely go back there again. Boney's has such an amazing deli and especially at such an affordable price but their deli service sucks! Always look forward to buying a deli sandwich during my lunch break but just for them to take my order takes them at least 10 minutes! Mind you, I only get a 30 minute lunch break. And the prepping time takes them 15 minutes! That's already 25 minutes wasted of my lunch just waiting for my sandwich. Today I order a Turkey Wrap. Took them 5 whole minutes for them to take my order and a whole 10 minutes to make my wrap. There was no line for sandwiches except an order of two sandwiches but all I saw were the workers chitchatting amongst each other instead of prepping (hence doing their job). Got my wrap and paid which took less than 2 minutes. While eating my wrap I noticed that my wrap didn't even have turkey in it. Headed over to the deli to see if they could make me a new one but immediately turned around because their workers were just chitchatting with each other and there was already a long line of people waiting on their order. Just went to the cashier to ask for my refund. Didn't even take a picture because I was already so disappointed and frustrated that I just wanted my money back. I don't leave many reviews, but felt like I needed to this time. I went to Boney's for the first time today trying to "shop local" and all...and I was so disappointed in the customer service I received. I didn't catch the lady's name, but the woman that rang me up at the register was so rude and unfriendly! She barely looked up during the entire process, and the only time she spoke to me was when she asked if I wanted a bag. When she finished bagging up my groceries, she practically SHOVED it to me!! Like, are you serious?!? No "thank you" or "have a nice day"....just moved right on to the next poor soul in line. Needless to say, I will not be returning. Amazing grocery selection offering the most organic options! Coronado NEEDED this grocery store! All other grocers around don't carry this many organic goods. Nice market and very friendly staff. This place is obviously very popular for their sandwiches. We waited almost 30 minutes for 2 sandwiches. Their best selling sandwich (island something?) was absolutely worth the wait The bread was fresh and soft without falling apart and the meat, toppings and sauces pair together beautifully for a perfect filling lunch. The roast beef blue cheese sandwich on the other hand was slightly disappointing. Much smaller and less to it - just meat and melted cheese. Went today to look for Irish soda bread and the very helpful store clerk showed me where it was. I bought four loaves and Irish bread & butter too. Wonderful service and selection of food. We cut slices, toasted, buttered and ate one delicious loaf as soon as we got home. read more

Tasty, well-priced sandwiches! My only complaint is that you cannot build a sandwich from scratch, but you can customize existing menu items by adding or subtracting ingredients. Boney's has plenty of parking in their store-only lot. There is a fish and meat counter, sandwich and deli salads counter, and lots of organic and healthy grocery options. It is walking distance from a bay view of Downtown - perfect for a picnic - and offers patio seating. A basic sandwich or wrap is only $5, and special sandwiches are $8.50. read more

While the sandwiches are great, the deli service is wildly inefficient. Even with 8+ people behind the counter it takes them 30+ minutes to make a sandwich. Most employees are chatting and moving at a leisurely pace with no hustle. Also, when you call, either no one answers or they hang up. I recommend - if you can get them on the phone - to place an order days in advance, otherwise plan on spending a good amount of time waiting on a sandwich. read more

This review is more so on the Island Baja sandwich than store in general, but absolutely LOVE THEIR ISLAND BAJA SANDWICH! It's absolutely perfect and it's the only sandwich I'll crave. Not much of a sprouts fan but it just works on this sandwich! Rest of grocery store seems to be organized just fine with a lot of enticing products (especially drawn to their bakery section and produce section). Purchased a few grocery items for breakfast for our stay in Coronado. The isle were clean and well organized. Even at 7.30 at night when they close at 8pm the staff asked if we needed help finding anything. Sadly they were out if their seafood soup for the night that we wanted to dinner however we got a BBQ rotisserie chicken that was delicious instead. A little more expensive than the vons down the street but as always you get what you pay for. read more

We were visiting SD from LA and stopped by to pickup a sandwich for lunch on a Sunday, wasn't expecting much but it was SO GOOD. It was honestly pretty busy so it was a bit of a wait but we didn't mind, my friend and I both got the Coronado Club and we loved it, the foccacia bread was bomb and the sprouts too omg. I'd been hearing raving reviews about the Boney's sandwiches so decided to give it a try! Went on a tuesday evening. There were a few people in line, but not many. Ordered 3 sandwiches and they look around 45 min to come out... not super ideal but only 1 person was working (slowly). The sandwiches definitely surpassed our expectations though! This place just gets progressively slower and worse the deli you guys could make a fortune but you operate at a speed that is in reverse. I'm standing there. I'm watching the clock go backwards. I could grow a chicken kill it cook it and make a chicken sandwich sooner than your people will put chicken on bread. They stare at a ticket like it's a foreign language and they are trying to decipher it. Two hands not moving for many many seconds at a clip, maybe 10 seconds just staring at a ticket 10 seconds then pick up one item as if there's not only 15 sandwiches and you guys should know how to make all of them by now holy moly. Please whoever owns this place call me if you call me. This one star review will turn into a fortune for you because that's how backward this place is and how desperate you need someone like me who actually knows how to run a business. If the manager of this place is not the owner, the owner should fire that manager and replace them with me immediately. This place is terrible. I don't come here often but every time I do the deli section gets worse. I went there tonight to get one simple thing-cut Turkey meat. It should had taken 5 minutes tops! Took over 30 mins when I was the only one there! There were four people sitting there doing nothing. Another lady was pretending to be labeling and never attempted to look up as I patiently waited to be serviced. Finally, a kid comes over and begins to take my order. As I sit there waiting for him or anyone to begin cutting the turkey meat two younger girls come over and get helped. Immediately....This is probably after 15 mins that I've already been waiting. Where the original guy who took my order has began to make their sandwiches. The other four still doing nothing....finally some other girl hands me the meat-30 mins later....mind you, I'm with my little daughter at this point. I grab my turkey meat and had a few choice words for the workers-they should all be fired.. were my exact words. needlessly to say, I go to the cashier where I ask who the manager is. The kid who can't be any older than 20 says he is. At this point the "manager" basically dismisses my complaint. Listen, I don't use this app often. I only use it when something blows my mind...either in a good way or a bad way. And unfortunately, Boneys, you blew my mind in a bad way. I don't understand how you can have roughly 10 people working in a deli, and two of those people are working on one total sandwich at a time. That's half a sandwhich a person. I ordered one sandwich, and it took no kidding 35 minutes. I don't get it. Don't get me wrong, I get it that there are people ahead of me in line, and people that call in. I understand that. What I don't understand is how it takes upwards of 8 minutes to make one sandwich...with two people. I'm not a chef or assembly line professional, but the lack of efficiency is glaring, even for a numbskull like myself. read more

Here's the thing, this rating is about the grocery store and deli, where the deli sells their food at basically cost to get you in the building and buy some additional snacks (drinks, chips, salsa). Most everyone knows you can grab the best valued sandwich ($8) in Coronado and as a result there is much much much higher demand than supply. So yeah, last time I ordered a sandwich I waited 45 minutes for it. If you're concerned about the line, just count the number of tickets they have to fill and multiply by 7 and you'll have an idea of your wait time. Your best bet is to arrive at 11 or 4, otherwise be prepared for a wait. read more

Loved this little grocery. The foods they offer are a similar selection to Whole Foods and other health-inclined stores. Looked like a great selection of produce as well. Clean and organized. My only complaint was that their in-house bakery items that are packaged on the shelf have no lists of ingredients, which is a challenge for those of us with food intolerances. read more

Boney's Bayside Market is a natural foods store on Orange Ave that is a staple for the health-conscious consumer of Coronado. The shop boasts great brands of organic and non-GMO foods, but do their sandwiches made to order meet the cut? On the left hand side of the outlet rests the deli where the energetic and busy staff take orders for customers. Diligent and quick, the staff put together a cold classic veggie sandwich for me. I did see them take out the slices of bread from the plastic bag on the shelf and use condiments or vegetables directly from shelf of the store. While it is nice to know they trust their product, it felt less like a deli and more just a group of people using store ingredients in their nearby kitchen; in the sense that none of the ingredients felt particularly fresh. The sandwich was only $6, so there is not too much to complain about. Overall, the taste was mediocre (5/10). The avocado and veggies were good with the herb roasted mayo, but the sourdough bread certainly felt like something out of a factory especially since I saw it removed from the packaging. The staff was kind and hard-working, but I don't know if I would recommend getting a sandwich from here again. I'm hopeful that there is another flavor of sandwich to try or a less busy day when I can get something that reflects the quality and freshness of Boney's Market's usual products. read more

Don't answer/leave you on hold forever, not accepting phone orders, short staffed etc etc. sandwiches there are the best deal otherwise the other premade food is pretty expensive. If you want a gluten free sandwich you have to buy the loaf yourself and then buy the sandwich on top of the price of the bread you just bought. Mind you this is a grocery store. The deli staff might possibly be the laziest or entirely worst managed group of workers I have ever seen in real life. I feel like I'm on a prank show each time I go there. You can stand at the counter for 10 minutes while 8 bros are walking around aimlessly behind the counter, looking at you, and ignoring you. Once they do take your order, they could not care less about if it gets made or not. 8 people behind the counter, 8 people waiting on sandwich orders, and one guy will go throw some stuff on some bread every couple of minutes with no acknowledgement that their orders are stacking up. Yesterday I went in to order a sandwich and the guy said that they couldn't make it "because the sandwich grill shut off." Deli is so painfully slow, it has never gotten better, there are always several employees working in the same area but they only ever seem to be able to turn out one sandwich every five minutes. Definitely a management/owner issue since they've cycled through many college kids at this point. Sandwiches have become 50% bread as they have started cutting back on the protein to cut costs. The sandwich place is extremely slow!!! Lots of leaning on things and laughing. Not working. Letting tickets pile up. Customers just waiting forever. 1 hour for a sandwich. On top of that, customers names were intentionally changed into other names. Men's names into women's names. Then no one would know when their names were called. I love Boney's. I visit almost everyday since I live within walking distance. The store has a great offering of fruits, vegetables, meats, and prepared foods that are very good and reasonably priced, especially considering this is Coronado. Boney's also has a tremendous selection of organic and healthy food options. I especially enjoy their soups. The employees are kind and responsive - not sure why there are negative reviews. In three years of almost daily visits, I've never been treated any other way than as a respected and valued customer - except by one self-entitled customer who literally pushed me out of the way to skip me in the short line. My one recommendation is an expediter in the deli. The sandwiches are good but the wait really is too slow. Actually painfully slow, and this could be rectified with an employee dedicated to getting orders out in a timely manner. Otherwise, Boney's is a great resource for those living on Coronado, and those visiting! read more

On the way to the Padres game, my friends and I stopped for sandwiches. My buddy asks for gluten-free bread. Simple request. Common request. And the cashier--Bread-Confused Brenda--looks at her like she just asked for a sandwich made out of cat food. "HUHHHH??" she says, rummaging through loaves like Dora looking for her map. "I don't know what that is." (also with Dora's blank soulless stare) If you don't know what gluten-free bread is in Southern California, get with the program. Then it's my turn. I order a BLT on sourdough. The BLT is the backbone of civilized society. Bacon. Lettuce. Tomato. Bread. Nothing confusing here. They write it down. We wait. We wait some more. About 20 minutes in, my friend checks. The answer? "We don't serve bacon, but we can make you something else" Can you believe it, folks? A BLT with no bacon! Absolute disaster. Nobody's ever seen anything like it. What kind of Deli doesn't have bacon? If you tell a person 20 minutes after ordering that you do not serve bacon, you are not running a deli. Boney's, by itself, is a wonderful grocery that is akin to what used to be Whole Foods but with a more curated product. I went for the sandwiches at their remarkable deli. Their Sandwhich and smoothie selection is full, diverse, and delivers the best lunch (in my case) you could want. Fresh ingredients, great flavors, and friendly staff. What went well were these astoundingly delicious gastronomical works of art! The Bayside Turkey sandwich is simply delicious, and that was without cheese! The tomato spread and sliced tomatoes are what brings out the flavor that wraps itself around the moist turkey. The focaccia bread was terrific as well, perfectly toasted and not as bready as most focaccia; this really helps as it does not break apart with all the moist ingredients . Perfectly made. The Chicken Parmesan was made with equal care, and was complete with cheese! And it delivers oh so incredibly well! Perfect amount of marinara that's up there with the best of Italian restaurants! Again, served with an incredible focaccia bread that sheathes the perfect chicken parm that has to be eaten to be believed! The staff is incredibly reliable and knowledgeable about each of their deli specialties, and have a genuine sense of pride in what they make. Addressing the past one-star comments regarding the time it takes, all I can say is that my deepest apologies go out to the deli staff for having to deal with people of such fragile egos, of such high opinions of themselves, that they absolutely have to demand a quality sandwich at the snap of their fingers. Quality demands time, and for those who are patient, you will be rewarded with such an amazing sandwich, it very well make this your default go-to for a slice of deli-based heaven. I won't give it a one star because I rock with Boneys and their sandwiches. But the deli team needs to figure something out. I asked one lady if they were able to give me some ranch for my sandwich and her response was just negative and demeaning. I would have been fine with a simple "no sir I'm sorry" but she acted as if I was crazy for asking. Being kind goes a long way! read more
