Small Batch has become our favorite place to relax after work or to stop in for a pint before a movie at a/perture or music at the Carolina Arts Cafe. Inside you'll see exposed vents along the ceiling and a concrete floor that gives Small Batch an urban, city feel. However, this brewery is anything but cold and impersonal. Subway tiles provide a backsplash for the taps, and refurbished pallets line the walls. Artsy chalkboards showcase the current draft beer list. Lining one of the walls are wooden slats with their Kickstarter backers' names.
Typically Small Batch has an IPA, amber, stout, and seasonal brews on tap along with several guest beers. You will find handcrafted cocktails like my favorite Bloody Mary and a selection of wines and bottled beers. Their beer offerings are unique and creative. Made in, well, small batches, the beers rotate quickly. There's usually something new to try on each visit. Several personal favorites of mine have been the epic Blood Diamond IPA (it took citrus to a whole new level), the chili spiced South of the Porter (I am wondering what they could do with the habaneros I grow?), and the unfiltered Woodhouse Wheat (prompting a Netflix binge of Archer).
This local craft brewery is now serving food. Here's my 4 favorites. The Cheesemonger (béchamel sauce- goat cheese - fresh mozzarella - grana padano - arugula - olive oil) The mild bitterness of the microgreens partnered with freshly ground black pepper added complexity to this upscale open-faced cheese sandwich. The creamy béchamel sauce and mozzarella provided balance to the sharp flavor of the goat cheese. It's our favorite Breadzzas.
Cobblestone Market (arugula - BBA pulled pork - seasonal market vegetables - Small Batch house vinaigrette) The bitterness of the baby arugula was offset by the sweetness of the BBA marinated pork. This good sized salad was tossed in light vinaigrette that didn't overpower the other ingredients. The red onion, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes added a blend of color and crunch. Our favorite salad paired well with the citrusy Limonhead IPA. The hoppy bitterness, toned down by the lemon zest, along with the herbal aroma made this a great partner for the salad.
Southern Hospitality (grit cake - BBA pulled pork - forest mushrooms - Kranked gravy) The fried grit cake, neutral in flavor, added a nice crunch and acted as a vehicle for the meaty, delectable mushrooms and pulled pork that had been marinated in a sweet BBA sauce. Topped with fresh, aromatic herbs and dressed with the rich Kranked brown gravy, this was our favorite dish from the Small Batches group. When available, we would pair it with the BBBBA - Bourbon Barrel Amber 7.1% ABV. The dark amber, bourbon flavored beer was robust and could stand its ground alongside this hearty dish.
Loaded Doughnuts (double fried Krispy Kreme - Kranked chocolate sauce - whipped cream - chocolate shavings) The doughnuts were warm and fluffy inside with a slight crispness to the outer crust. They reminded me of indulgent deep fried fair food with a gourmet twist. Drizzled in a rich, bitter sweet chocolate sauce and covered with a heavy whipped cream, they paired very well with a pint of Kranked or The Percolator 5.8% ABV. The cocoa aroma, coffee flavor, and mild carbonation make this a very drinkable stout. Together, they made a wonderful finish to our evening.
Small Batch is friendly, casual, and inviting. On Wednesdays, they have something interesting in the Randall (a process where other flavors are infused into the beer) and have created concoctions like Butterbeer using Match Day IPA and butterscotch candies. If you stop in Thursday for Pint Glass Night and order two beers, you'll take home the Small Batch glass of the month.
