In fact I think our server was the owner, and he let us know that his wife was the cook (after we complimented our meals). Prices are very reasonable and there is a nice selection of fish and meat dishes. My husband and I shared the pork belly taco (appetizer) and the fish and chips plate. Our friend ordered the last available flank steak. Everything came out timely and was delicious! There was enough food to go around and no one left hungry. I'm really glad that our friend stumbled upon this restaurant. It was not crowded and had a lovely evening atmosphere for our last evening in town. It was walkable from our Airbnb and in a cute neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

A few helpful hints: Ask the bartender for a menu, take a seat and then head back up to the bar to place your order. They have a pitcher of water at the end of the bar with glasses so no need to add an extra expense for bottled water. Remember on Sunday a bar or restaurant is the only spot you will get alcohol so don't think you can grab some beer at the Kiwi or Rema and drink at home/hotel. I got the herring with lingonberries which sounded weird to me but after the first bite I was sold!! I cleaned the whole plate with ease because it was so good. The prices are affordable compared to other spots in Norway so assure you go downstairs because the menu and prices are different.

We of course had their signature dish: The Reindeer sausage topped with lingonberry sauce, mustard, and crispy onions. The hype around this place is greatly deserved! The food is fresh, warm and delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dining Style: It is a walk-up kiosk with no seating, restrooms, or table service. So be prepared to eat in the rainy Norwegian weather or walk back to your hotel or accommodation. If you cannot choose - I'd recommend a the reindeer hot dog with traditional toppings. With crazy working hours from 11am to 3-4 am, you can definitely grab a snack anytime of the day or night. Oh, and the hot dogs cost much more than three kroner like they originally did, back in 1946.

However, the restaurant lived up to its hype. The restaurant is romantic and loaded with European ambiance. This is the kind of place where you know you aren't in Kansas anymore. Lamb is something that I love, so I was happy to see it on the menu. It was incredibly good. Not gamy at all, wonderful cooked, flavorful, and tender. It was fantastic. My wife and I split the huge portion of excellent potatoes au gratin that came with my lamb. It was creamy and tasty. Norwegians LOVE potatoes, so some sort of potato dish is a requirement, I think. My wife had a vegetarian hamburger that came with fries and veggies. She said that it lacked flavor, but it looked good. The fries were excellent.

I mean, I did, which is why after a day of traveling to Bergen from Oslo, I desperately needed sustenance and Bryggeloftet & Stuene was on my list and near my hotel. I walked in on a Tuesday night and no, I was denied. The place was packed, but the friendly hostess took my name down for a reservation for the following day. So that's what to do here. Make a reservation if you can't get in because everyone wants to eat here. The following day during my reserved time, it was a much more satisfying experience since I ate here! The restaurant is located just across the pier and along Bryggen, and inside, it's decorated with old paintings and photos of Bergen and Norway with classic, wood furnishings all around. It takes you back to Bergen's former days, which is the charm of this place. Staff could not have been friendlier. Bryggeloftet & Stuene has traditional, Norwegian food. I ordered the wolffish, which was in season, and the fish came with veggies and a side of potatoes to however you want them made. And this is when I learned that the area prepares potatoes dauphinoise, which is like au gratin and was sooo delicious. My dish comprised of fresh wolffish in a lemon, dill sauce, fresh vegetables and of course, with the side of dauphinoise potatoes. But this is the kind of restaurant that no matter what you order, everything will be delicious here. Ya gotta eat at Bryggeloftet & Stuene when in Bergen.

Overall, the experience was not that great plus it is not easy to climb up several steep steps of stairway to get to a restaurant! When my Norwegian friends say hot, it's normally just a tickle on the tongue - but this was some real hot stuff. Fortunately I like hot dishes and think it was tasty, however if I'd known before I would suggest to add cheese to get a more balanced flavour. Great place to visit - the interior is not very cosy but alright - decent assortment of beers but the staff weren't very knowledgeable. The fries was normal but nothing special - to get a five they would need to add dip sauces to their menu, educate the staff about the beers and balance out the burgers a bit. All in all, four runners out of five athletes.
