The Martinez location has been my favorite so far. Sloat Garden Center is a Bay Area staple for plants and gardening needs. They offer both indoor and outdoor plants and have an amazing selection every time I visit--always great quality and pest-free. Prices are very reasonable for the quality you're getting. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful; they've even marked/held plants for me a few times over the years and always followed through once the plants were inspected. Went here over the weekend for the first time and it was amazing! I usually go to the one in pleasant hill but was closer to this location so I wanted to check it out. The first thing I thought was how peaceful it was. The ambiance was very soothing and the people were friendly. They had a great selection of flowers and veggies. There are more veggies at the other location I think but still a nice selection with varieties you won't find at most big box stores. The woman working asked if I needed help and she showed me everything I asked for then checked on me again during my visit. The plants are reasonably priced for the quality. We have been to Sloat Garden Center in Pleasant Hill two times recently. The first time we purchase beautiful hanging baskets of lovely flowers and a magnificent large fern. We went back recently to see if they had another large fern, but unfortunatey their inventory was good, but we didn't find one quite as magnificent. We were so impressed with so many of their healthy looking plants. It is a pleasure to just cruise through their facility. read more

I have gone to Sloat ever since there was only one on Sloat in SF. The one on Sloat has almost always had less than enthusiastic service...maybe the fog? I have found the staff in Martinez much more engaging and helpful, in particular Ling who was very patient with me one day as we discussed soil options. read more

The staff had excellent customer service and were very helpful in helping me find the best blue berry bush to fit my needs as well as the necessary supplies I needed. Just stopped in on a rainy day looking for advice on ground cover. 2 cars in the lot and 4-5 employees milling around. Walked around the whole store - out and in - including by 2 employees chatting outside and not even once did someone greet me or ask if I needed help. Was quite surprising. I never write reviews, but had to get the word out to other weekend gardener types. The selection of plants here is amazing, and the entire staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. Ended up with a plant that I wasn't expecting to purchase, but after hearing details, realized it was exactly what I was looking for. Not as cheap as other places, but you pay for the quality-my family and I have been shopping here for years. Love this place so much. Whether a busy day at work, or low key days. I love spending my time here. It's peaceful, lovely garden decor ideas. Staff are super helpful and knowledgeable. I have planted SO, many of the herbs, vegetables and fruits from seedlings. NOTHING beats organic taste. My herbs and vegetables always come out looking beautiful and tasty. This garden center has a great selection of garden plants and a very large selection of house plants. Everything seemed reasonably priced. If this was all that I found it would be a solid 5-star nursery rather than a 3.6 rounded to 4 stars. The reason I stopped here was to look for tomato plants. It is late in the season and I wasn't expecting much of a selection. They had a couple of potted tomatoes left and a few of the most pitiful plants I have ever seen in a nursery. I was talking to the garden expert and she said that they would not be getting any more in that made sense to me. They were still available, but the buyer thought it would be unethical to order any plants this late in the season because they might not have a good yield. I understood that but to me, it was more unethical to sell the tomatoes that they had left even if they were $1 cheaper than they had been at the beginning of the season. read more

We came here as new homeowners who are trying to develop a green thumb, but had already killed several plants purchased from Home Depot. It was recommended to come buy plants from a nursery instead for longevity and quality plants, and I'm so glad we did! With the expertise and help from one of the employees working there, we were able to select 3 plants to plant in our front yard. She also recommended some organic soil to help our plants grow. I had originally bought a couple of palms from Home Depot but they weren't in the best of condition so I returned them. They also weren't exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for the Cordyline dracaeana Palm. I took a chance and called Sloat Garden Center to see if they had any and I was told they had three different types. So we hopped in the car and ran over and found exactly what we were looking for. It feels a little pricey, but the plants are really well taken care of and I do believe we'll have success in growing these and having them in our garden for many years to come. I'm looking forward to them getting tall and even more beautiful. The little cactus that I found weren't what I was looking for. I was looking for the coral aloe plants. They don't seem to be around right now. But these two little cuties caught my eye and they also make a bloom on a stalk. Personally impressed with their Grass area. Lots of fun choices. The nursery is very well-kept with knowledgeable people to help answer your questions. There is a plant guarantee. And they also have a website that might answer any further questions. They answer their phone! So if you want to ask a question over the phone that works too. If you're looking to fill-in, re-create, get inspired, or learn something new, check out Sloat Garden Center. The staff is decent, I guess? We have spent a small fortune at Sloats, as I am obsessed with plants. I will say that I would avoid the Martinez location!! Getting expensive, 250+ dollar plants, lol, multiple plants, here has wiped out my healthy plants that I had for years. You know why?? Because their plants are infested with pests, and critters!! I appreciate that you can exchange plants but guess what? You can't bring back your other plants that have died because of a spider mite infestation due to bringing in a new plant from Sloats! The return policy is great, it's like a revolving door. Just don't buy from here, if you want to keep your precious babies, because they will become infected, and die. Also, they keep no history of the plants you have bought from them. read more

I went in yesterday and the last minute were mandatory and I did not see anybody breaking the rules. There's always a great selection I even got myself a daffodil bulbs. that I'm going to try to plant indoors. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable I have never had any issues if they don't know the answer but go find somebody who does. If I can't get to Berkeley this is where I come. This summer and now into fall, Sloat Garden Center has become my go-to place for veggie gardening! I switched after a very disappointing trip to a pitifully sparsely stocked "Big Box" store. There, I bought a plant, which I thought was overpriced to begin with, and it died in less than a week! So I went into Sloat this summer, and I was so HAPPY to see how nicely stocked it was. Almost as stocked as pre-pandemic days, BUT, pretty close! Sloat had a LOT compared to the nursery section at that "BIg Box" store. They had everything I needed at very good prices. I bought some veggie seed packets, young plants, and potting mixes. There was a great selection of outdoor planters of varying prices. The plastic ones that I bought fit my budget and was better quality than the other store. Sloat had more container stock and sizes to choose from - all very attractive and sturdier. Since then, I've made 4-5 return trips. I had an amazing tomato, chard, pepper and eggplant harvest, and I think it was because of their excellent in-store brand of potting mixes. I also bought some cute healthy flowering plants that really attract hummingbirds like they said! I'm a very novice gardener, but now I'm excited to start a round of fall veggies. Ok, another thing is that Sloat always keeps their popular items in stock, like their various kinds of potting soils. Their staff is helpful and friendly, available to help, without being annoying or fake. The store is kept clean, and they have observed safe practices every time I visit - like wiping down the credit card machine after each customer. I like that this nursery has a nice roomy layout and every area is neatly and clearly labeled, with helpful descriptions. If you are into container gardening, go to Sloat! Who can say, in this weird and crazy season, that one can go shopping at a store, and relax and ENJOY the experience so much that you forget that we are in the midst of a pandemic !!! read more

Large plant nursery with a huge selection of everything you could possibly need for gardening. I'm an amateur gardener so I always have questions and need advice and that doesn't seem to be a problem at this nursery just find an employee and ask. I like wondering around the large indoor and outdoor areas of the store to see what is new or peaks my interest without being hounded by employees wanting to help me. When I'm ready for assistance I will find them. I recently bought fruit trees here and they were healthy and green and ready to be planted in my own yard with ease. All the necessary soils and foods were in stock and ready to go unlike other stores running low on stock due to Covid keeping people at home doing more gardening. The only draw back to this store is it is a bit pricey. I don't mind paying more for good quality products but the mark up on some items such as plastic pots is a bit much. I have only been shopping here a short time and have yet to see any sales but hopefully they do have some sales at times. They do have a rewards program to earn points for every dollar spent to eventually get a few dollars off so that is at least something. But if you are looking for good quality plants of any kind and a variety of soils and plant food, definitely come here. read more

I visited this location to pick up a large quantity of succulents to use as favors for my upcoming wedding. I had previously spoke to the Concord location and they offered 10% off, which this location honored without any issue. There was plenty of plants to choose from, many varieties and very healthy. I was sad when I heard Navlet's had closed, my family and I had shopped there since I was a little kid.. I can say that after several shopping trips to Sloat I really like what they've done here. The set-up is essentially the same, only they now have a much better selection than before, (they have Annie's Annuals now, yay!) and so much more pottery! Their selection of cacti and succulents can't be beat. On my visits the staff have been very welcoming and helpful with my questions. I have been going in pretty often during these lockdown times to get supplies for my garden (like everyone else!) and all the employees are always busting their butts off!!! They are sincerely working so hard and it has not gone unnoticed. I am ALWAYS greeted when I walk in and asked if I need help. In general my favorite thing they offer is their wide selection of seeds and native flowers. SUMMARY: This is my go-to nursery, and it has been for years. I was sad when I saw Navlet's had sold, but the new owners have improved it a lot. I found plants I had been looking for at the Martinez Sloat Nursery on a Sunday in mid-April.. All were in wonderful condition, well cared for despite the cold nights. The Asst. Manager took me around with my list and filled up several carts. without pressing me as she recieved several phone calls--indicating she would call back. (I am in a wheelchair--they helped push me along on the paths. Much more attentive and considerate than at local big box stores in Martinez.) Another employee made a list of the Mexican culinary aromatics (herbs: Epazote; Yerba Santa, Chiplin, and Papalo) Ithat are difficult to locate in any Bay Area nurseries to ask the supplier--suggesting I call in a few weeks to learn if they could special order them. The vegie starts, white Bouganvilla Pomegranite and berry vines I bought have been transplanted are happily growing. Once I have more raised beds built and prepared to be gopher-resistant, I will likely retirn to the Sloat Nursery for more starts and some seeds (for flowers that our pocket gophers dislike) to plant this season. read more
