Scheduling was easy and she kept in touch with me via text regarding delivery logistics. Once we had everything set, I was able to pay by phone and the driver showed up soon after. Contra Costa Topsoil is a family run operation. You can tell because they go the extra mile for you. Tonja works in the office --and she makes deliveries too! She's very professional and friendly. Arrived on time as promised and took great care in maneuvering the truck to an area we picked. She took extra precautions to prevent damage to edge of the pavers and made sure to ask about any sprinkler heads being in the area. In scheduling the delivery she gave up some of her weekend to make this delivery happen in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Contra Costa topsoil to anyone who is looking for mulch or bark. The material that was sent to me exceeded my expectations. The medium size redwood bark was perfection. The color was spot on and the bark is nice and heavy. I've had other companies deliver bark to my home before in the past that had remnants of building, material and nails in it. We called this location three or four times over the span of two days. Left two detailed messages with our information, phone number, what we were looking for... never got a call back once. It's a shame because they had the color and type of tanbark we wanted (for our backyard playground), and we had stopped by there and saw their options in person about 4 days prior but were past their closing hours by 4 minutes, so no one was there to help us or answer questions. They had a decent variety, but definitely not as much as I thought they would have being this huge lot and specializing in topsoil. We had so many questions about how it worked, is there an option to put it in bags, how many bags we'd need, do they deliver, does it cost extra, etc, and just never knew the answers to anything. We ended up purchasing a lot of red tanbark/mulch from the local Ace Hardware, and I doubt we saved money, but definitely saved the hassle of trying to get someone on the phone from Contra Costa Topsoil. read more

Here they appreciate my business and money. They show that in the speed of response and quality of the product that they deliver. If you are looking for planter box mix, this is a good one. It retains moisture well. It is has the right blend of forest, soil, and porosity mixes. In a recent landscaping project, our contractors sent a delivery from a different company after we told them to use Contra Costa. Good thing that i was home, because we sent them away and called CCT. Luckily they were able to help us out of a bind and deliver it same day. What did I learn today? Give them a call when you want to make your purchase. I have relied on this soil company for years in my landscaping. They are friendly, knowledgeable, quick, and have the best prices in the county for excellent soil compositions. I noticed a couple of poor reviews and would urge others to consider the source. I am saddened when people review based on their particular personal emotional needs rather than the product they are reviewing. I recommend people go see their soils and learn what their plants require and assess the various soil compositions available instead of blankety saying they sell subpar products. read more

I have never been treated so poorly as I have coming here to pick up dirt! And it is all about parking. My first experience, having never been here, I park next to the office like someone would assume. Oh no, they had to drag a broken down vehicle from the back area, so I was told not to park there and not where to park. Ok, so where do I park. "what do you need?" Screened fill dirt. Park up by the pile and we will be back to load. I wait, the guy is decent and I leave. I come back a second time and park where they asked me to and I get my dirt. All good. Come back today and park where i have the last 2 times and no one is around, so I walk to the office. Meanwhile leaving my truck by the dirt pile. Walk in the office and I get ," so you had to park in the middle of the road?' the trucks had to jockey around me, with no problem other than jockeying. The guy in the office says the loader is coming around now. Walk towards my truck and I get attitude from the loader and I say that every time I come here you guys give me grief about parking, where do you want me to park? He asks what I need and he disappears to the back. I wait by my truck for a good 10 minutes and nothing, so I leave? This is customer service?? Never going back there again and I will never recommend this place. read more

I bought 5 yards of their "Potting Mix". Everything I plant in it is stunted. It has finely ground particulate like you would find by a freeway, which is where I believe they get this "dirt" to mix with old shaved wood which might even be Pressure Treated=Toxic and ground lava rock. Water pools on the top and never really saturates. I don't trust these people and I would NEVER buy from them again. read more

Office help left before office hours last Friday (I arrived at 3:15 pm) and field operator was not happy to provide any type of service because I was told he wanted to go home. He was rude! I went out to CC Topsoil looking for flat rocks. They have a relatively limited selection of rock and didn't have what I was looking for, but I'm happy to know that when I need a BIG quantity of soil for my succulent beds, they carry a Ruth Bancroft mix that will do nicely. This is a place where you bring your truck and have them load directly with their large equipment. It's not a place where you'll find small quantities of soil and rock in bags, although if you bring in a small container they will sell you a small amount. Prices are pretty good. I was slightly confused with the overall initial drive up. You pass mounds of dirt, bark, and gravel on the way in. You pull into the gate, see sign on the ground in front of a few mobile home/office type offices. There are tractors passing you, semi's pulling in and out. But once you park, go up and get familiarized you'll soon find out that it is a laid back environment. Next time I'll know just to pull into the area to the left, ask a guy in a tractor for what I need, then go pay for it at the office. This place is super convenient to my house and anyone near the hwy4/680 interchange. I only picked up a half a yard of top soil for my garden. The amount of stars might change depending on the growth of my garden this year. In other words you never know what type of soil you're getting until you plant something. I expect good results based on the guy in the tractor saying the type of soil I got was the best. read more

Worst customer service i think I've ever experienced. They tried to deliver at a time outside my delivery window, which was scheduled for 1 PM or later. They showed up at something like 1045 or 11 in the am, leaving me a message saying that they couldn't make the delivery because they didn't know where to leave the mulch, despite the fact that I had told the person taking the order that I wanted it left on the driveway. I had even moved my cars onto the street for that purpose. Left the message and so turned around and left. When I talked to the office about their error, the woman I spoke with, Tonya, suggested that we were all at fault for the error, meaning including me, the customer (who had already told them where to leave the mulch and was told that my delivery window wasn't starting till 1 PM). She then laughed. I did not laugh because I did not see how I was part of the error in any way. She did re-schedule my delivery for the next day which was somewhat of a pain for me but I went with it to try to be easy. But, then they delivered "medium bark" which was actually large bark the next day...the pieces were the size of my hand. So my landscaper told me they had delivered the wrong stuff. I took a look at it and realized that yes it was in fact too big. So I called Tonya, didn't hear back for about four hours while my landscapers were waiting to spread the mulch. She told me that I was wrong and that they had delivered the correct thing to me and that what I was talking about was in fact medium bark. I offered to take a picture of it next to my hand to show her the sheer size of it. She very rudely told me that she had a huge pile of it sitting near her office and she didn't need me to send her any pictures, that my landscaper must be wrong and that I must be wrong. Very rude. I finally asked to speak to a manager. She said there was no manager. I asked to speak to an owner. She said she was the owner. I questioned her about that because I could not believe that an owner would treat their customers with such rudeness and disdain. She would not answer me when I asked her if she truly was the owner. She just started evading me. So, let's see, I guess this means that they took the order, took my money, delivered it at the wrong time without instructions, so failed to deliver it, failed to admit that they had made a mistake, failed to reschedule it at a time that was convenient for me, delivered the wrong stuff, told me that I was wrong, and have potentially ied about the ownership?! I would love to know if Tonya truly is the owner. If she is, then she needs some customer service training to ensure the health of her business in the future. If she is not, then I hope the owner is reading this and realizing that he/shave an employee who is delivering exceptionally poor customer service, failing to take responsibility for her errors, and is claiming to be the owner of your business. She's paving a bad road for your future business. Update: Tonja, in response to your reply, I was in fact quite reasonable about your refund offer, saying I did not need the entire amount refunded...that I only wanted the amount I paid for the WRONG product refunded. That seems more fair on my part than "hostile". Your reply has reinforced my main point: Customer service is not your strong suit. Caveat emptor...buyer beware. read more
