I thought this pub was actually pretty cool, but then again so did quite a lot of other people, considering how packed it was when I was here. Then again, it does happen to be a city pub, and it was a Friday night when I was here, and honestly, you really should expect this on a Friday night. However, this pub was pretty cool, especially with the huge beer garden out the back, the really friendly staff, and just the general jovial atmosphere. I would say this is more of a 3-1/2 stars. Having been to Mexico and excited of the thought of Mexican style food, I was let down. I had the tacos, but it had more of a modern twist instead of more authentic flavor. The nachos were also not up to par. After a few beers I think the food could be a decent selection. The staff seemed disinterested in us being there, but it was about noon, so who knows what there thoughts were. Plus when we tried to us QR code, it wasn't working properly. read more

Made children (6 and 8 yes old) wait all night for their soft drink drinks and then took them off them. Drinks for adults were ordered and paid for and didn't arrive for over an hour. 4 different staff members were alerted to the issue and promised to bring the drinks and didn't. The children's drinks didn't arrive until after the end of dinner and 5 mins before we needed to leave. We told the children they could bring their drinks to drink in the car. But as we walked out of the restaurant the staff confiscated the drinks from the children saying they couldn't take them with them. This was a soft drink in a bottle! !!! We reminded the restaurant that the drinks had only just arrived and the children had waited all night for them. The staff took them anyway without any apology or recognition of the situation. 2 very disappointed children and 4 adults (who work for large local businesses) who won't be returning. Will be applying for a charge back with our credit card company. read more

This was a unexpected but pleasant dinner, hot dog I recommend had the chilli cheese dog, beef taco's you need to eat fast as the taco is a soft tortilla that softens then breaks so be aware! I am not a big coriander fan in fact I hate it, even tho there was lots of coriander present in everything it was so finely chopped it was bare able. read more

I had foggy memories of the Slip Inn, a place that I had previously only visited as a precursor to equally foggy nights at the downstairs Chinese Laundry. Apparently this is the very place where the future Princess Mary met Prince Frederik. Whilst I didn't find my Prince Charming, I was charmed by the Slip Inn's end of week promo "5@5" - $5 wines, beers , bubbles and vodka from 5pm - 7pm. $5 glasses of Chandon in a spacious, sun soaked and later fairy light lit courtyard were a little too tempting for me, turning a Friday afternoon beverage into another slightly less foggy all night affair. [Base only on the food:] Being from North America, I'm always excited to see any semblance of Mexican food here in Australia. Unfortunately, that's all this was... a facade, missing the mark. I kept ordering different taco variations hoping that I'd find a winner in the lot. But, alas, no luck. Tacos... -Fish: (B+) Perhaps the best flavor of the group, and "seafood" is always a good idea in Sydney; but they were a bit heavy-handed with the sauce -Prawn (D) SUPER soggy, to the point that I could hardly pick it up, and not really any flavor from the meat itself -Pork (C-) Not as soggy as the prawn taco, but still could have used a bit of draining or a second tortilla to keep it together; most "forgettable" of the lot -Beef (C) Had high hopes for this one, as it had a generous covering of finely grated white cheese; but once I got into the "carne asada" itself, the flavoring of the meat tasted more Asian than Mexican {sigh}... at least this one wasn't so wet that it fell apart on me. -Chicken (B-) Decent flavor... yeah, that's about it. The staff was only mildly friendly - seemed like they just weren't into being at work on such a slow (Monday) evening. The place was dead, almost 100% empty. Another unassuming little place in Sydney's CBD, we walked in and our tour guides/friends local to the area walked us straight downstairs, leading us from what was a quite restaurant(due to the fact no one was there) down to a buzzing, vibrant bar filed with Saturday night schooners and slurpers. (Apparently eating before you go out to drink is a thing here, in England we say eating is cheating, but yea know...I'm all about the eating so it works for me.) We managed to find ourselves an unreserved table as this place is a hot spot on a Saturday night and plenty of groups are here for a few tacos before they shoot their tequilas. I didn't try any of their margaritas selection, but it's vast! Being gluten free there wasn't a massive range of selection for me, but you could swap out any our the tacos for a lettuce leaf.. that sounded a little underwhelming, so I went for the catch of the day instead, a white filet of fish, which came nicely presented with a large and flavoursome salad, this wasn't a garden salad of cucmber and tomatoe, it had strips of courgette and mini yellow squash in it, a lovely dressing on and a side of hot, fresh fries.. I'd love to show you a picture but i was so hungry by this point I forgot to and tucked right in! Oops. My friend, Chris is vegetarian and went for the Portobello mushroom burger which he said was enjoyable, Michael chose the chili dog with *all* the cheese on top and Rachel went for the fish tacos which came with a rather tasty little spiced mayo on the side and a chorizo quesadilla. We all shared some Cornchips which came with guacamole and freshly made relish. (Onion breath) Overall the vibe is good, the food is good and it's a perfect little place for friends to go a little wild.. not too wild mind, you're eating before the drink so that's never going to happen. Disappointing. I walk past this place to and from work every day so when it came time to organise a catch-up, it's the first place that I considered. Unfortunately, I did not make it in as the bouncer stated that I was too 'drunk'. I allegedly stumbled while text-walking and this is irrefutable evidence of intoxication, even in light of perfectly lucid conversation. The slip inn is more laid back than it's close sibling Chinese Laundry and is a perfect afterwork location to catch up with mates, and have a few drinks. The service there is always friendly, and it has ample seating, and couch area's for small gatherings of groups, best thing of all is that if the you're prepared for a big night, pre-drinks at slip inn and go downstairs later to Chinese Laundry to finish off your night. It is obviously famous for the fairytale meeting of a Danish Prince and his Tasmanian sweetheart. But it has a lot more to offer in terms of great company, cheap drinks, a good sizes food menu, and a great location. The most busy night will be your Friday after work drinks, but if you happen to be there on a Wednesday or Thursday night, you're also sure to enjoy the more relaxed crowd. Last time I was there a fly flew into my half finished Coopers, so I took it back to the bar, and they happily swapped it for a free full schooner of Coopes without question or complaint. Just reading a few of the reviews down below .. I think it's totally WEIRD that this place's claim to fame is where some regular Aussie chick met and married a prince. ??? Like, are girls supposed to want to come here in hopes of meeting a prince??? The outdoor/downstairs garden is very cool. On Thursday night there was some girl singing with a band? A bit on the loud side but it adds to the ambience. See? Stopped in here for lunch on our first day to Sydney. Our expectations for Mexican food in Australia were low, but the food was fantastic. We ordered the secret taco, the prawn taco, the tofu taco, and the quesadilla with mushrooms. All great. The registers were broken, so it was cash only, but that seemed like a one-off and otherwise I highly recommend. read more

Had to meet someone for a chat after work and they suggested here. Apparently (according to the plaque on the wall outside) this was where some lady met some inbred European royal and subsequently kept women's magazines in business for the next decade or so. I suspect the place is a little different now. Its gone all faux Mexican (fexican). Done in a sort of overtly ironic/hipster way that makes me want to reach out and pull someone's well groomed beard out by the roots.. The beer selection wasn't bad. The prices were pretty average for a city pub. Service was good though one of their bartenders was trying to set the word record for slowest beer pour. If you got the other one you were fine. Although we didn't eat, the tex-mex style menu looked good enough that I'm tempted to go back and try it. Not sure I can face the ironic decor though. read more

This little addition to the merivale cohort was a well welcomed introduction. El loco had some great cocktails as well as a killer location. The staff were absolutely lovely from the security to the bar staff downstairs. The vibe and music was great switching from great classics to up to date all time favourites. It was a little weird to see our seats and tables go missing after a short while, otherwise the venue was great fun and definitely gave off the start of a good night. Definitely going to stop by soon to try the cocktails. read more

This is a regular lunch spot for me and the girls from work. We love a sneaky Friday lunch in the sun of the downstairs courtyard where we will have El Loco's famous hot dog and a glass of Rose... or two! Get in early to nab a good table or there are only tables inside left. Afterwork drinks are also good here, albeit a bit crowded, no chance of finding a table, most are "Reserved". Service is fast and friendly. read more

There's not much better on a warm Friday afternoon than enjoying a few coronas and some great Mexican food at the Slip Inn. The food is very tasty although the the serving sizes don't entirely warrant the price tag. The sun shines hear and the music is great. The Slip Inn is well known as the place where Prince Frederick of Denmark met his wife Princess Mary who at the time was a regular lass from Tasmania. If there is such a thing. Sorry, just kidding!. Endless amounts of people have attended the Slip Inn in hope that they too could meet their future Prince or Princess and so me and my companion rolled the dice and headed in to see if cupids arrow would fall there tonight. It was a Friday night and the after work crowd had thinned out a bit and food was on our mind. There are quite a few options with Thai winning out in the end although depending on what night you head in, pizza amongst other things might also be available. There is a great beer garden down stairs but a touch cold for my liking so we headed upstairs. For those who feel like a dance later in the night, the Chinese Laundry will cater to your needs so there is plenty to appease everyone including a few pool tables upstairs too. With our meal finished and drinks almost done it happened. Two people walked into the bar and purchased drinks. I could feel my heart rate increasing and hands getting sweaty. No it wasn't a princess, nor a prince but two ex Aussie cricketers who had come in for a night cap after finishing a days work. I couldn't resist and went over and said hello. They were pleasant to talk to and even though it's not what I had in mind when I came here, I left a happy man. Maybe next time for a princess. Or pizza! read more

You know how it works by now, Friday night at the stroke of 5pm all the suits in the city head to the local bars and watering holes and guess what you've just stumbled upon? - one of the most well known after work hot spots. Birds of a feather flock together especially in the beer garden so it seems. The best thing I did for myself was relax and have a good time. I ordered something off the menu to drink and then to eat. Find the faith and you will get the reward - try something different from the menu - the food is Asian fusion and Pizza so you can't go wrong. This is the bar where an unassuming Mary Donaldson from Tasmania met the Prince Frederik of Denmark - need I say anymore? Boasting fantastic out door tables (for a Friday group lunch book on Wednesday or before) and pleasant inside seating options. The food is both "Australian Pub" and Thai and everything I have tried has been nice. Standard drink options which you would see at any other Merivale establishment. Be careful of getting over charged. I like this place specially the outdoor beer garden. It is perfect for Thu and Fri nights hanging out and having fun till dark. It gets busy quickly and outdoor gets full. Beers and wines are nice, wine on glass is a bit expensive so better order whole bottle. starters are very delicious but very small in size :( 3 of us spent $120 on drink and starter in one night and it was more than enough BUT I accidentally (air quote) over charged $16 which if I had not checked I could pay for it. I mean staffs are not reliable and enter anything in the machine. Overall I like it very much just open your eyes while paying the bill :) read more

Worst Mexican in Sydney I met a friend at this bar/restaurant for a catch up after many years and we both started with a frozen margarita, which was overpoweringly sweet, and with no detectable taste of tequila. We also ordered some corn chips with salsa and guacamole to accompany our drinks, when the food arrived at the table after half an hour (and only then because we had to chase it several times) the chips were stale, the salsa looked and tasted old and the guacamole looked like it was made up of about 10% avocado and 90% filler. We switched to the jalapeño margaritas which was decidedly better than the first one but still with no taste of tequila... we each consumed four margaritas in total and couldn't feel any alcohol effect in fact we felt stone cold sober (my friend, who rarely drinks, should have been "under the table" at this stage)... we concluded that these were the weakest drinks that we had ever been served and each having over 25 years experience in the hospitality industry we both know what we are talking about. We also ordered some pork and fish tacos, we actually think the name should be changed to "cabbage tacos" there were a couple of pieces of meat at the bottom of each of them and a slight dribble of salsa on the top the rest of the filling (90%) was raw cabbage. We wondered if this was an obvious situation where the owners are squeezing the quality and ingredients in order to maximise profits with disastrous effects. We won't be returning and I recommend that you try another eatery... or drink beer and eat the French fries instead. read more

The Slip Inn provides a full bar outdoor setting atmosphere and gets very crowded on a typical Saturday night or when there is a nearby event. It is a very cozy place where everyone has common interests and get along together. A place for beers and wine. read more

Once upon a time a brunette girl from Tasmania, walked into a club and met a man who later became her husband.... But this husband came with a few perks - like a crown, a kingdom and a royal life - for this man was the Prince of Denmark - and now this Tasmanian girl is Princess Mary. This story is the type of fairytale every woman dreams of - but no one would ever guess that a bar like the Slip Inn could be the settings for such a remarkable story. It's not a dodgy bar - it's just a little more casual than some of the other Sydney watering holes. It looks like a heritage building - the architectural façade seems preserved but the interior do have more of a modern feel. You can grab a drink at one of their 3 bars, or some Thai (under $30) at their restaurant. It a nice place to hang out after work to get a bit of mid- week steam out of your system. Not a bad place to relax and maybe meet your prince charming. read more

Slip Inn was A-OK. Often confused with Ship Inn by many (or maybe just me?), the venue is somewhat upmarket and well run. The experience is rather relaxed and the atmosphere quieter than adjacent clubs. The decor is attractive enough and there are plenty of seating to rest your weary feet. I got a little bored after half an hour and decided to move on. It was rather quiet for a Saturday evening at 11pm. read more

I've been here a few times and it definitely doesn't disappoint! It's awesome in the summer to enjoy a bucket of corona or an icey Margarita and the food is pretty great too.
