Tom Yum Broth
John W L.

We went mid afternoon and had a pleasant and relaxing time. The restaurant is within Union Market on the top floor and it was our first time at this place. The server was attentive and helpful with the ordering process. We went with the Combo A and Combo B platter. Each combo gets its own hotpot. The veggies and meat tasted fresh. The sauces also complimented the flavor of the food.

I came here with two friends and found parking pretty quickly. The restaurant is located in union market (when you go up the escalators to the left, across from BWW). Once you enter, you go all the way down and it will be on the left hand side in the corner. There was a waiting list but no wait so we got sat down pretty quickly. The vibe was pretty relaxed and not too loud. Our server was Ali?? He was funny and went over how people usually eat the meal since I only had shabu once before and needed some guidance. The service was great and very quick! The lady that was getting our refill and checking in on us was ON IT! As for the food, I got the spicy miso broth with toro beef and it was DELICIOUS! Not too spicy and not too bland. I enjoyed it a lot ! For sauces, I got the spicy garlic (eh wouldn't get again) and the GOMA (I recommend this one) I didn't know what it was but was pleasantly surprised. I got the ramen noodles and did an extra serving! The extra noodle serving can be shared since it was more than the initial serving. I can't wait to be back again!!

The service was excellent. Cindy was very friendly and helpful. The shabu was delicious. I got the shabu combo. The Tom Yum broth was tasty and flavorful. The thin slices of toro and short rib were just a perfect combination. My partner got the spicy miso broth with shrimp and pork belly. The shrimp were big and juicy. The flavor of the spicy miso was delicious, too. The ambiance was cozy and quiet. I would recommend this shabu place. I would come back again.

Wagyu Kobe short rib

Arrived around 6:30 PM on Saturday. Waited about 1.25 hours to be seated and served. Wagyu Kobe short rib 52 ounce. Overall was fairly good and I would return, but not during a peak hour.

As a native Japanese, you don't get disappointed with Wagyu Kobe Short Rib with konbu soup base and sesame and ponzu sauces.

This was our first hot pot experience, and it certainly won't be our last! We began with the plum wine and strawberry nigul--both were absolutely AMAZING. The hot pot itself was incredibly fun, and the staff didn't blink when someone in our group asked for a fork because they weren't confident with chopsticks.

I had never had Shabu Shabu before but I was pleasantly surprised at our amazing meal. We all ordered the top of the line beef and it comes very thinly sliced (hubby added salmon). You choose a broth and a combination of noodles or rice and it comes with a good assortment of veggies. I love the Sukiyaki broth it is delicious and they have a habanero oil and two drops is plenty! You wait until your chosen broth is boiling and you drop all your veggies and noodles in the broth then you cook your meat and eat it right away. It will blow you away. The meat melts in your mouth! I give this place 4 stars only because the ambience is a little lacking and bc it's a little on the pricier side. The food is outstanding!

Delicious shabu! Highly recommend! We usually make a reservation as it can get pretty busy, especially on weekends. There's not many people serving the restaurant, but the service is still excellent. There are a lot of customizations, such as choosing the meats, sauces, broth and noodles. The meat is delicious. Highly recommend the chicken broth for the base. The veggies come with unlimited refills and taste good dipped in the sauces they provide. The soup becomes delicious and full of flavor after cooking everything in it and is perfect for adding the noodles at the end to make a noodle soup.

I am a sucker for some good hot pot and this place did not disappoint! This restaurant is located in the Union Market shopping center. You can park in the parking garage and go to the top floor and it's on the opposite side of the elevator. I think the location is great considering you can shop around while you wait for your table or after you eat. We got some drinks at the bar near the restaurant and waited until our table was ready. I will say this place is a bit pricey... but it will fill you up if you order right. I typically eat a "large" plate at other shabu spots so I opted for Combo A where you can choose 2 out of 8 meats but there is also Combo B where you can choose 2 out of 4 premium meats. They both come with 2 sauces, choice of 2 rice/noodles, veggies, and 2 soup bases. It was more than enough food and probably a bit too much lol. The also have an option if you are sharing meat with someone to add a share plate that comes with a pot of broth, 1 sauce, rice/noodles, and veggies. They also offer plates of meat by the oz. The restaurant is pretty small so I would get there earlier if you're going on the weekend or for dinner.

Delicious and by far the best Shabu I've tried in OC. Must get the 1855 beef in sukiyaki broth and the goma sauce is perfection!

Ask the Community - Slice Shabu

What are the gluten free options?

Plain water, no broth, no sauce. My husband is GF and that's what he had to do.

Are reservations required?

No but they do get busy at times.

I've never been to this sort of place and I'm wondering why all the photos show raw food with some sauce; do you boil everything in a BROTH (Suace of choice)?

Yes that is correct. You boil everything in your choice of broth so you can everything raw. Meat and vegetables.

I'm blessed this is right around the corner from my work, so it's convenient (which is a temptation). The food is very delicious and the portion sizes are generous. I'm ordering form here every week for lunch, and nothing I've had has really disappointed. Food is served hot and made quickly. Their pineapple rice is off the charts. I would suggest getting it a bit spicy/with more Thai curry. Their crab and Thai fried rice is also a hit. Their massaman curry is flavourful and not too hot. You can always add more spice if you want. My favourite noodle dishes are the Pad thai (so yummy and not dry), pad kee mao (love the Thai basil), and pad wood sen. I have ordered the chowmein, it wasn't the best or my favourite, this dish didn't really taste "Thai" at all and I would not order it again, but it does not affect my opinion of this place. The people are friendly and food is ready despite them usually being busy. Don't forget to ask for chili in vinegar - these are a yummy addition to your food.

When we got there, there was a little bit of a wait, about 10 minutes. The menu was digital and we were able to order from the table from our phone. The service was good, the restaurant was clean and had quite a few tables there. The bathroom was located upstairs, the key was by the register at the front. The scallion pancake was good but I've had better. The dan dan noodles were really tasty, it was like a mix of spicy noodles with peanut noodles and I'm definitely down for that. The XLB was juicy and oh so delicious. The spicy wontons were fresh tasting. The beef rice cake was great but I wish it had a little kick to it. Disappointing, but large selection. This market is a…read moretraditional karinderia style (cafeteria) where many dishes a prepared and you select it behind a clear window. The value is quite good considering how much food you get, but as a Filipina, I'm disappointed in the quality and taste of what is provided. Most of it looks good, but everything seems dry, lacking or other. The marinade for the pork/chicken bbq is tasty, however, they are so stingy, much of the meat consists of chewy fat that doesn't break down. Cheap. It also isn't cheap for a stick of bbq. Kaldereta -Stewed meat, usually beef or goat with veggies. Tasty, but once again, the meat has way too much fat, and the meat ratio in the stew is totally not worth it. Adobo - tasty sauce, with the same problem of too much fat, little amounts of meat, and poor quality. Kare-kare - decent, but lacking in flavour, good on the amount of veggies in the sauce. Lumpiang shanghai - dry inside and outside, lacking flavour, like it sat for way too long or overfried. Mind you I have gone when they opened and it was 'fresh ' or newer. Ginataan - Thick coconut stew usually with eggplant, pork, and squash - okay, but the ginataan lacks some flavour. Pancit - Okay, generous portions, sometimes can be dry and I can't describe it, but the taste seems....off. All in all, my experience with cafeteria style Filipino food here in Lake Forest left a lot to be desired and I would rather cook this at home. I can agree the value can be good, particularly if you go on days when there are specialist, but if you get can get past that flavours being lacking and a bit uninteresting. I love Filipino food and am always seeking a warm hug from flavours and dishes I grew up eating.

Like most asian fast food and deli shops, you will find asian stews, whole fish fried to golden, shrimp cooked with head and tail on, all types of skewers and bbq meats, etc. There's always a long line there, especially right around lunchtime or dinner hours. I ordered a couple of skewers but they were too fatty for me. I know most people like some fat on the meat but I do not like it.
