This park is AMAZING! There's so much to do, see, and explore here. Some of the highlights include: the historic Daggett House, the watercolor society, and Loof carousel. There's a dog park, covered pavilion and various picnic sites that can be rented, plus tennis and pickle ball courts. There's also frisbee golf, multiple baseball fields, a walking path along the 10 mile river, plus a playground. There are many places to take photos; Marconi garden with gazebo, a picturesque pond with bandstand, and an English garden (called friendship garden), plus countless places with lush grasses and trees. In the summer they offer family entertainment with various performers and music. They also offer a summer camp for kids as well as various exercise and dance classes for adults. All this information can be found on their website. The hidden gem of this park is its winter wonderland celebration where the community comes together to decorate 650+ Christmas trees along with displays and lights, it's absolutely magical. The park is clean and well maintained and is constantly undergoing updates and improvements. The one down side is there's only 1 small basketball court even though there is space to expand this area. read more

The Slater Park Looff Carousel is a historic carousel that was completed in 1895. It was built by Danish immigrant Charles I. D. Looff. He was born as Carl Jürgen Detlef Looff in Bad Bramstedt, Holstein (now Germany) in 1852. After immigrating to the United States in 1870 at the age of 18, Looff settled in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and found work as a carver for a furniture factory. He began a hobby of taking home leftover wood scraps from the factory and carving them into carousel animals. He created his first carousel in 1876 and it became Coney Island's first carousel and amusement ride. Looff soon opened his own carousel factory in Brooklyn and continued to build more of the rides. In 1886, Looff was commissioned to build a carousel for Crescent Park (known as "the Coney Island of the East") in Rhode Island. In 1895, he moved his family there and established a new headquarters. He built a second, larger and more elaborate carousel for the amusement park. He also built an adjoining workshop and showroom for prospective buyers. Looff relocated to California in 1910 so he could build carousels for amusement parks on the West Coast. He passed away in 1918 after building close to 50 carousels. Looff is regarded as one of the most important and influential carousel builders of all time. The Slater Park Carousel was originally built for a carnival called Lee Funland in upstate New York. It was moved to Slater Park in 1910 where it still stands today. It is one of only six historic carousels in the United States which still resides in its original building. The carousel is a "stander" or stationary carousel. This means that the animal figures are designed to stand on the platform with at least three legs on the ground and they don't move up and down. This contrasts with "jumper" figures which usually move up and down and have all four legs elevated as if in mid-gallop. The Slater Park Carousel is the oldest Looff-stander carousel in the world. The platform features 44 horses, a camel, a giraffe, a lion, three dogs, and two chariots. Today the carousel is open from April through October. It operates on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm - 5pm (daily in July and August). Rides cost $1. My family and I recently visited the Slater Park Looff Carousel. My wife and I have been carousel enthusiasts since we visited the New England Carousel Museum a few years ago. We were spending the day in the Greater Providence Area and decided to visit the Crescent Park Looff Carousel in Riverside (which is absolutely beautiful!) We learned that Charles Looff built another carousel in 1895 that was located nearby at Slater Park, so we made a drive there afterwards. We were a little disappointed that the Slater Park Carousel's horses don't move up and down and that there isn't a brass ring device like the one featured on the Crescent Park Carousel. That being said, the Slater Park Carousel is still exceptional. All of the horses and menagerie animal figures have been beautifully carved and painted. We also noticed that this carousel moves quite fast (about 9 mph). In fact, the speed has been slowed down over the years and used to be as high as 14 mph. Overall, we had a fun experience at the Slater Park Looff Carousel and would recommend carousel enthusiasts to visit it as well as the nearby Crescent Park Looff Carousel. read more

I never knew this gem was less than 10 miles from home. It is a big park with water features, an abundance of green space, and best of all a little restaurant inside of it that serves hot dogs, fish and chips, ice cream and other fun fare. I got a chance to visit it during the Water Lantern festival event. I'll definitely be back! read more

Beautiful park with plenty to do. Slater Park is nice for families. They have a carousel that is cheaper than the one at Roger Williams. They have a walking path around a pond, bike paths, a dog park, tennis courts, and a small little farm with animals. I didn't explore the park too much but I did take my daughter on a walk around the pond and I took her to the farm where we saw goats, chickens, and Donkeys. read more

There is a wonderful Christmas Lights display here at the park. There is the carousel, train rides and a hay ride. There is a food tent, and a tent with music. I'm not sure how much longer the display will run, but if you get a chance, it was well worth coming down and checking it out! There is a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. It is very dark, and parking is everywhere. It has certainly grown over the years, and so have the crowds. read more

A little bit for everyone. The park is quite large, multiple gazebos (one has a beautiful man made moat I've seen many get married at), clover pond, fishing, carousel, baseball parks, tennis courts, basketball courts, large and small dog parks, farm (but you can't pet them), food, frisbee golf, and lotsssss of places to sit in the sun and shade. Also seasonal bathrooms near Lens Seafood and the other end near the tennis courts. COVID update - most things are open, signs on benches and at the dog park to stay 6 feet apart and to use as your own risk and nothing is cleaned by the state workers. Tips- often they close some of the roads for road races, car shows, Christmas lights, etc - there are two entrances to the park -- so you should be able to get where you want to even if part of the road is closed! Note some of the roads are one way! If you play Pokémon Go - this is a GREAT spot!! read more

Nice park for various different activities. Good for exercise, good for the kids, and dog-friendly. The park is pretty big and has many different areas/activities including a large playground, a little zoo, a dog park, an animal shelter, many trails to walk on, and much more! There are often events happening here as well which is great for families. There are plenty of places to picnic or to have a get together. There are no dogs allowed at the zoo, but there is a walking path behind the zoo that I sometimes walk my dog on. It is nice because he is able to see the chickens, goats, etc. He doesn't bark so the other farm animals are just as interested in seeing him as he is to see them ! :) read more

Slater is my nearest and dearest (park that is). Do you forget you are in the bucket when you step into it? Nope. Is it a swell oasis? Depends... I like Slater Park because it works hard to supply as much as possible to the city I am currently calling home. In the summer they had swan boats and a clam shack. In the fall, a smaller pumpkin spectacular. Now for the Yuletide, a very nice Christmas tree and night before Christmas story display. I can't wait for what spring holds. Slater is a relatively clean park with lots of baseball and the like fields, playgrounds, a historical building, access to the ten mile greenway, and is home of the RI Watercolor society. It's a nice sort of escape and allows for grilling, chilling, and a small bit of woods in a city that is known for being derogatorily being called the Bucket (I use it as a nickname and not because I potentially find it to be shit). They are willing to work with community groups and support other ideas and I will support them for that. Doesn't hurt they are the closet park to my apartment read more

I haven't been to Slater Park in 30 years, but I went tonight to the Room Full of Blues and Pops in the Park concert which was part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival. The park is clean, pretty and there was a lot of fun family activity going on. Room Full of Blues was great! It brought me right back to my college days. I was surprised that there was plenty of seating (lawn) left even after the concert started. Parking was available but was a little bit of a walk, shuttles were available if needed though. There were probably a dozen or so food trucks available as well. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see Pops in the Park, but I'll definitely be back next year! read more

Just got back from a long walk along the bike path with the dog and hubby - very relaxing way to spend the Columbus Day morning. Many walkers, runners, bike riders, families and dog lovers were met along the way. Slater Park will always hold a special place for both of us since we both grew up around the park and remember riding bikes there all summer with friends! In the past 15 years or so the park has made quite a transformation and now it seems to have a lot more going on (if a calm beautiful place in the city wasn't enough). The have FINALLY paved over the road along the Ten Mile and can I just say Kudo's for that!!! Much better to navigate now. If your looking for a pet - the pawtucket animal shelter is located in the park (just outside where the zoo USED to be) - stop in a take a look, they always have tons of kittens / cats / dogs and an occasional exotic pet just waiting to be adopted. Great place for runners if you need about 5 miles (end to end) on a nice paved path.

This place is pretty nice. If you're into walking, they have pretty long paths that go all the way around the park. If you're into fishing, well... they have a pond where you can fish. Last time I was there, some kid swear he saw a trout. Not sure how I feel about the fishing since there are so many ducks and the pond is so small, but whatever. If you can dodge the duck poop, you can lay out in the grass in the sun, or in the shade, hang out in the gazeebo, or have a little cookout. The place is huge and it looks like they have different sporting events here too, but I've never partaken. read more

Great for walking...dog friendly. Better if you have a bike. Perfect for family gatherings and events. Good parking. I did the end Alzheimers walk and it was a wonderfully supportive environment. Great bunch of volunteers. Loved all the freebees from the sponsor companies. I do wish the park would employ more staff to clean up. People are less likely to litter if there is no litter to start. I did see trash in the underbrush. Maybe a yearly push to clean up. Like a clean our park event for the community. read more

This place is a jack of all trades with so much to do. A nice dog park for little and big dogs 2 separate sides. It's clean and very friendly. You can fish and go on duck boats have party's or just cook out. Great walking trails for ppl with or without dogs. Has great baseball fields but they are always busy with games in the summer. A great ice cream/ lemonade shack and sea food as well wich is person never trued but lemonade and ice cream are great. They used to have a basketball cort but they for some reason tore it down. The kids play ground is nice and always busy with kids zooming around. Plenary of slides and climbing adventures for big and little kids. The swings are fun but are always being used if actually seen kids wait in line for them. The dog puns is a cool part of it as well. My 2 year old daughter and 1 year old pup love it there. I am so happy I am within walking distance of this park! Slater Park has a lot to offer...open spaces, walking paths, a playground, a snack stand, a carousel, a dog park, paddle boats, baseball fields, tennis courts, disc golf, farmers market, petting zoo, etc., the list goes on and on. I tend to walk over to the park to walk my dog. The one time we got ice cream at Len's snack stand and they even had a 'doggie dish' for my dog complete with a Milkbone on top! I also walk over to visit the farmers market. It's a small one but they have a lot of good, local produce. Christmas time at the park is especially beautiful. They decorate the park with over 200 trees and lights. It's quite magical! My only complaint is that I wish the green areas were better maintained and there wasn't broken glass everywhere. But if you're ever in the area, be sure to make a stop here. You won't be disappointed! read more

For picnicking, sure. For playground fun, sure. For biking, it's ideal. For hiking and feeling one with nature, you're better off finding another park to meander... Slater is definitely more of a family-day-out type of place. Not that there's anything wrong with that! My 'hike' there was less than the relaxing escape from the city I'd hoped for. The walking path doubles as the bike path, and with on one respecting the 'walkers stay to the left, bikers to the right' rule it was a tad mayhemmish and totally not relaxing. I was also taken out of my zone with the near-constant popping from the shooting range off in the distance, and while the lake is beautiful, especially with all the swans, geese and ducks happily floating and fishing, it was depressing to see the loads of garbage carelessly strewn on the shores. Come on, people -- do better. I should note that the park is pretty massive -- you can walkthrough the more open spaces and there are lots of pockets for grilling and chilling. However, if you're looking for a city escape to nature, you're going to have to go further outside of the city. read more

Wonderful large park with tons of space for parties and walking and biking and kids. Apparently it's 197 acres of land altogether. Lots of water to stare at. Lots of evil geese to avoid. I loved that this park, unlike Lincoln Woods, didn't have poop all over it. Also, this park afforded lots of space for sunning and or sitting in the shade. There were high and low bits, tree-covered areas as well as open sunny areas. I saw people fishing in the fountain thing and I've played in the free tennis courts too (at least 9 courts, set up 3 by 3 by 3). The park is very large and I love that about it. It has a carousel that runs and you can ride in swan boats I guess, for a price. Also there is food for sale within the park: bliss ice cream, hot-dogs, fish n chips. And there is a playground on top of all that open space. Last time I saw the playground it was being attacked by children, it was pretty epic. It seemed you could just park anywhere so I can't even see this park being TOO full to allow more people. Just a lovely option for relaxing outside. Bonus info: At Christmas there is some tom-foolery afoot. If you're around for Chistmas time you have to stop in and see because they do some thing every year where people decorate trees for loved ones so the park will be filled with individually decorated Christmas trees and they'll have sleigh rides and concerts and things. Perfect for play dates or family outings! I take my toddler daughter to Slater every couple weeks since there's so much to do. It's a great way to get out of the house for a few hours and keep a toddler busy! They have a playground, farm animal viewing area with lots of toys to play with, a wishing well, ice cream parlor and other snacks/food area. The pond is great to walk around and accommodates strollers too. I like to park outside the playground and do a walk around the park, then play a bit and head over to eat and finish off with the animals. We usually are there around 3 hours or so. While it's a lovely little park (playground, pond, bike path, petting zoo, woo hoo), I'm sticking to the tennis courts for the sake of this review. Because, seriously, that's all that matters. If you're a tennis junkie and are looking for a place to hit, this is where to go. The courts are in FANTASTIC shape--the nets and the pavement are flawless. Even better, they have LIGHTS. That stay on until NINE O'CLOCK in the summer. Oh, wait, I forgot to tell you--there are TEN courts! TEN! Muchas gracias, Pawtucket. Slater Park has a few leagues, a summer camp for kids, and something called the "Pawtucket Open" (nope, not kidding about that), so it provides lots of opportunities for recreational tennis. In terms of free, public courts in Rhode Island, these are some of the bestest. read more

Great park! There is so much to do. I've gone on walks, played catch, previewed the basketball courts (outdated?) and utilized the tennis courts (6-8) at this place. It's very peaceful. Tons of people but you're not on top of each other unless you want to be. If I could change anything it would be the excessively loud (and inappropriate) music that is often blasting in the picnic areas. This is a family park and everyone doesn't approve of having their toddler or preteen mouth the explicit words to "yooo favorite sooooong"... I love this park! So much fun stuff to do, great playground and cute little barn yard. Carousel and paddle boats were so fun this summer, my three year old was obsessed. I walk my dog here too, and even tried the clam cakes (pretty good!) My only complaints are that as a whole its a little dirty. The water all smells pretty funky, theres trash in a lot of it. The "fountains" at the barn are disgusting. Also the bunnies cages are so small the giant bun can barely turn around which i cant understand why thats necessary. read more

Wow, what a let down! Today was supposed to be the Dog a palooza and several people and dogs showed up but the event was canceled, despite rain but ads that said "rain or shine." I have been going to Slater Park since I was a toddler, having grown up only a few miles away. It used to house a nice zoo, in addition to pony rides, baseball fields, picnic grounds, paddle boats and the the historic carousel. My son played ball there on fields maintained by the Pawsox (Wonder if that is ending with their pending departure?) most recently, my grandson and I attended one of the free summer concert series there. It was beneath cover, at a large pavilion located across from tennis courts and next to the historic Daggett House. I noticed a nice dog park adjacent to the venue that appeared to be very popular. Sadly, the carousel was under construction or, perhaps, being restored, so we were not able to visit or enjoy a ride. We didn't really venture into the other part of the park, so I can only comment on what I saw. The Japanese gardens are still lovely. My cousin's daughter was married there a few years ago and it was beautiful. read more

If Roger Williams Park is feeling a bit congested, perhaps you should head here. The park is large and complete with a pond, a carousel, a dog park, and sports courts. It is also ideal for biking with both roads running throughout and some paths! If you are looking for a nature hike, I would recommend heading somewhere else. This is a park in a city and that remains obvious throughout. If you are looking for a quite trail experience, this isn't the park for you. read more

This is a nice park only 1/2 mile from my apt and has tons of walking trails and things to do there. They also have an ice cream place and seafood restaurant inside the park, unlike any other I've ever seen. Both Little Leagues play here and they have several different diamonds to play on. Fishing, biking, walking and picnic areas throughout the park makes this place a great place for families to go. read more

Great place for a jog, to walk the dog or walk with the baby and nice areas to sit and watch the geese (i didnt know they hissed..wtf!) There are parts of the park like the big play yard dog shelter and petting Zoo that i have not been to so i cant comment. This is a beautiful park with many good place to take photographs. The playground and picnic areas are very nice. The grounds are kept up well. There is also a dog park, I haven't used it yet but I look forward to bringing my dog there. read more
