I have had a lot of dental work done over the years (several cavities filled and an implant from a tooth I knocked out in my youth) and so I know how important it is to find a dentist that is not only likeable but competent. Dr. Hicks came highly recommended from everything I read on the internet. Luckily I was not in any hurry for a new patient appointment (just due for a cleaning and did not have any issues to report) because it took several months to get me in. If I had a more urgent issue they may have taken additional steps to get me in sooner--not sure, as that wasn't the case for me. My appointment started promptly. The hygienist assigned to me was kind and did a great job taking x-rays and cleaning my teeth. Dr. Hicks was friendly and professional. I have had some dentists that try to sell me nonsense cosmetic crap for my teeth, and was glad that Dr. Hicks and her team did no such thing. Everyone in the office was upbeat and friendly: you can tell the staff is treated well, because the morale is high. I would recommend Dr. Hicks to anyone looking for a new dentist.

We asked for a moment to discuss our options and while we spoke in the waiting room, the hygienist was glaring at us from behind the counter and whispering with the receptionist. Once we had talked, we went up to the reception desk and asked about the charge. They cut us off and started circling new numbers (the same numbers we had been quoted initially) saying that the "hygienist wasn't sure" about insurance coverage. We asked if it was possible to only complete one of the two procedures and that's when Dr Carrara came up behind the receptionist sternly saying "I won't do one without the other". No explanation from the doctor. No attempt to share her medical experience or the why behind her statement. She said she already told us last appointment, blaming us for the misunderstanding. This was all after mispronouncing one of our names incorrectly multiple times and refusing to respect a name they didn't recognize. We would've continued with the treatment as originally stated with insurance coverage but the behavior of the hygienist and Dr Carrara was beyond disrespectful. We wanted to support a woman in a male dominated industry and it hurts to be treated by another woman in this way. On top of this, we're being charged "cancellation fees" for leaving without any of the procedures which is absurd considering we felt we had no choice after being bullied by multiple staff members. Based on this review and others, I'd say, maybe one or two appointments will go by with no problems but eventually this office will disrespect you in one way or another.

Having had extensive procedures in several other parts of the country (including several crowns and an implant that were well done by my previous provider, in San Diego), I was unsure I'd find an office in Tucson that could match the level of expertise I've had elsewhere. Dr. Mitchell made that simple -- he not only has excellent depth in general and aesthetic dentistry but is also just an incredibly nice person. I'm someone who experiences major anxiety in the chair, and I've found Dr. Mitchell's easygoing demeanor a huge relief. I also appreciate that the hygienist is extremely respectful and patient-focused. For instance, I'd had my last bitewings eleven months before, and before my arrival, she had noticed that and double-checked with my insurance to ensure I was eligible, but more important, she also asked me if I would prefer to have them a little early or wait until my next visit. It's completely refreshing to have the staff ask what the patient wants, instead of trying to push services or products. Another major advantage is the office itself -- located on Grant Road (north lane, next door to Black Rock Coffee, just across the street from the Mercedes Benz dealer and slightly west of the post office), the building has ample covered parking, and the interior capitalizes perfectly on stunning views of the Catalinas, with several exam chairs facing straight out to the gorgeous scenery...just another way to feel relaxed and happy in a place dedicated to making you flash your best smile!

And it was for an extraction procedure. Well, I'm writing this about 2 weeks after that procedure. I was happy walking out of the office the day of the procedure, and I'm even happier now with a completely smooth recovery. First of all, the office staff are absolutely OUTSTANDING. I don't know how you could possibly get better customer service. And the waiting area is a very pleasant environment, there's bottled water, and it's very comfortable. Every aspect of interacting with the support staff was excellent - scheduling, reminders, billing, you name it. All done pleasantly and efficiently. Then there was the extraction itself. Not that I'm running any dental procedure races here, but my goodness, I'm pretty sure my procedure - an extraction with a bone graft - was done in under half an hour! Amazing! Dr. Ham explained what he was planning to do, executed on it, I had NO pain whatsoever during the procedure, and get THIS - while yes, they highly encouraged me to take a pain killer the minute I got home, I really didn't feel the need to do so and I have not once taken ANY pain medication AFTER the procedure. Didn't need to, no pain! Sure I may have had some bleeding - expected - the day of the procedure, and had to put some gauze in the vacated spot where the tooth had been, but after that, no more bleeding the next day, and on the road to a smooth recovery. I don't know how I could be any happier with a dental practice. I mean, I bet nobody LIKES going to the dentist, but if you do have to go, this is an excellent place to get your dental work done.
