First skyline chili ever... I tried a small 3 way and had half of a cone. I had heard about how people seem to LOVE or HATE skyline chili and to be honest, I don't get it. Obviously I'm not from Cincinnati, or even the States, so I have hardly ever eaten chili before, and even less chili with cheese and spaghetti... But as I tried my first bite of skyline chili I could only think of one thing: Greece. The chili tasted exactly like the meat we got served every day during a 2 week student trip in Greece. I don't really like cinnamon, epecially not in my meat but I had to eat during that trip so I did. And somehow I will forever associate cinnamon meat with Greece. So... I don't love or hate skyline chili - it's just like Greek meat and although I'm still not crazy about cinnamon meat, it's ok! (tastes evolve :)). I had just gone through this Proust-ian moment when I read that skyline chili was brought to Cincinnati by a Greek immigrant! Seldomly have I felt wiser - I knew it tasted greek!! :) What I like about skyline chili is that it's cheap, quick, easy, it has a lot of cheese. Oh and also, our waitress called us sweetheart, sweety, darling... which was just very funny :) So American (in my eyes...) :) So, yes, we will be back, on evenings when we don't feel like cooking or spending a lot of money. This is absolutely the most horrendous chili I have ever eaten. Don't believe the photos it looks and I assume tastes like diarrhea. I honestly do not have the words to describe how it taste like. Skyline rocks the house. I absolutely love it. My issue is with this location. It kind of sucks. This location was on my way home from late night work years ago and I tended to pass because this location's chili seems to have always tastes burned. I believe Skyline is the best Cincinnati chili. Gold Star smells like upchuck, and the remainder (Dixie, etc.) make their chili too chunky for Cincinnati chili standards. If there was an option to give 1/2 stars, I would have given 3 1/2, but I believe in rounding up. This particular location always gets special instructions correct, which is a bonus. The only thing I thought was weird was the barely legal drive-through worker hitting on me, then when I got home, I found his number in my bag with a message, "CALL ME!!" I came and had lunch here when I was at a workshop across the street at the Holiday Inn. It was great to be able to get in and out for lunch quickly and have consistent food to boot! We snagged a booth before the lunch rush, since it was about 11:45. The waitresses were friendly and efficient. Got my water with lemon, just how I like it! I am not the biggest fan of Skyline but I will get a craving for a 4-way every once in a while so I give in to my better judgement and usually end up here. This particular Skyline Chili is a wonderful place to go, and the best part, my fellow late-nighters, they are open until 4 am during the weekends And if your also happen to love people watching, this is the place for you! There are all kinds to be found here. Service can be really slow and give yourself a good amount of time to stand in the checkout line. The servers also have to ring you out and when it's busy at 1:30 am, it could take a while. And if you are concerned with your safety, don't worry. Covington Police have an officer on duty during the late night. I do however wish they had a drive thru for the days when I pick up Skyline on my way home from work! read more

The fiance has been raving about Skyline Chili for the better part of 10 years. We finally went to Cincinnati this weekend for the Flying Pig Marathon and I got my crack at it. Thankfully this location was open on Sundays, unlike the ones downtown. I got the chili cheese fries and the Chili Cheese Coney. The chili is good. Very cinnamon-y which is the first thing I noticed. The fries were really good and the hotdog was good, but the hotdog itself was small and lacking. If it was a meatier hotdog I think it would have tasted better. Anyway, the chili was really good. Cinnamon was such a different taste. I would return for sure if I was in Cincinnati, but it isn't something worth dreaming about and I don't think I liked it enough to try to add cinnamon or replicate in my own chili. read more

Prior to this visit, my experience with Skyline Chili was a store bought frozen dish I ate after a long night back in college. Upon visiting Cincinnati, I knew that Skyline had to be one of my food stops. My wife and I shared a chili coney, a 4-way, and chili cheese fries. What I liked: The cheese...something about the amount of it and the airiness Excellent service Diet Dr. Pepper on fountain What was OK: The chili Perhaps I am a chili snob, but neither of us were that impressed with the chili itself. As for the chili coney...nothing beats a National Coney Island in Michigan (home to the best quality hot dogs in the nation). So there..I had a 4 way and lived through it. What is there to say about skyline that hasn't been said. When it's late or you are running a little low on cash or face it, craving it, there is really no replacement. My standard order is 3 conies with EXTREME cheese and a sweet tea. What really makes this ll so special for me is the EXTREME cheese. If you haven't tried it, please do yourself a favor and indulge. It is hot, but not HOT. It made skyline eatable everyday for me. I've eaten at many locations from Natti to Indy. While most are great this is one of my favorites. Now, granted I'm not a big fan of the Cincinnati style chili, but Skyline (in particular) tends to be my least favorite. I had a couple chili cheese conies this weekend after a long night of drinking... and still didn't enjoy them. If you don't like food at 3am, you're probably never going to like it. IMO, chili should be a hearty and filling meal, not a sloppy, cheap-looking, meat sauce. Skyline tries to differentiate themselves by mixing cinnamon into their chili. It's disgusting. So the only thing I've ever heard coming out of Cincinnati in the culinary world, is Cincinnati chili. A supposed legendary version of this classic. Far different from your normal chili con carne. I like legends and I like chili, so I set out to taste this mythological creation. Between the two biggest contenders (Skyline and Gold Star), my research showed that Skyline chili was by far the generally preferred. The location I went to must have been one of the older locations as it wasn't a free standing building but tucked neatly into a strip mall. The signage was old and didn't bare the modern skyline chili logo. The inside seemed like a throwback to the earlier 80's so that was all good by me. Very simply laid out, essentially a place for eating and leaving. You sit yourself and then a server comes over. All in all basic stuff, which is fine because it's a simple operation. The menu also follows this logic. Chili by the bowl, chili burritos, chili over french fries, chili dogs, and chili over french fries. I had a 4 way: chili, spaghetti, beans, and habanero cheese. You can get regular cheese, but habanero sounded interesting. And it comes with a lot of cheese. Seriously I feel bad for the cows that have to produce the cheese for Skyline, they seriously load up your plate. By the end it felt like I was eating mostly cheese which is pretty gross. Don't get me wrong the habanero cheese was actually really solid, there was just too much of it. The chili itself was pretty sweet. And the pasta was a little over cooked. Strangely though the combination worked well enough. I guess I would say, it one of those things to check off your bucket list as its cheap and fairly convenient to find. Cincinnati chili is definitely an acquired taste but with fresh onions and cheese how can I go wrong. It was delicious.

Walked in to the Skyline Cincinnati Chilli restaurant... The waitress was a very nice and boisterous young lady and as I was sitting down asked me if I was interested in a threesome or foursome (which is what they call a plate of spaghetti noodles covered in Chilli and Cheese -the foursome adds onions or beans) ...I of course giggled like a little school Earl...then at the sight of my immaturity she extenuated the inside joke with "ohh I see, you must be a virgin!" (Which of course would be somebody brand new to the restaurant). I placed my order for a foursome with beans.. 45 seconds later they placed this gigantic plate of delicious (way too cheesy) grub. I eat fast always, so within about 5 minutes I was slowing down and stuffed...before I could even think I had a bill in front of me and a refill on the soda ready to go. The entire experience lasted 8 minutes or less and I was out the door. It's like the entire experience was tailored to me. I can't stand sitting around in restaurants and especially dislike waiting on a check after eating...for $10 I had a fabulous meal and an unforgettable dining experience. It was perfect. read more

Had to try the chili since it was our first time in the Cincinnati area. Our waitress was super bubbly and peppy and explained everything well. My husband enjoyed his Coneys and I had a bowl of chili. Definitely a sweeter tasting chili with hints of cinnamon. Not as tomato based or chunky as we are used to in Pittsburgh but we really enjoyed it. Took some coney's to go for our son and he liked them too minus so much of the cheese. read more

They told me they're famous for their 3 way chili. I of course was very excited to try this world famous chili entree. I'm a Texan. I can appreciate good chili! What I was served was a plate of watery spaghetti, with some type of red stuff on top of it, and about 2 pounds of shredded cheese! I asked them where was the chili? Heard so much about this place before coming to Cincinnati. I must say I was a bit underwhelmed by this place. It was decent at best. I expected the coney to be the size of a ballpark frank, instead I was greeted with something that resembled a cocktail wiener. This might explain why it only cost $1.65 (as well as the waitress' facial expression when I told her that was all I wanted to order). After getting this reaction, I decided to add to my order with some chili cheese fries. Like the coney, this was decent at best. I really regret not ordering a chili 3-way; the guy next to us ordered it and looked very good. While my particular items were not extraordinary, the chili - the reason why I came here - was pretty good. Very different than most chili that you would be accustomed to outside of this city. Next time I'm in these parts, I'll probably give them another shot. Probably get the 3-way or better yet, just a big cup of chili. read more

As someone from Texas, I was skeptical to try Cincinnati style chili, as it is completely different than any chili I've ever had. I must say that I was rather impressed. Now, I will say that I still like Texas chili better. However, the coneys I had with the chili, and cheddar cheese were pretty awesome. I also had a four-way spaghetti (with chili, cheddar cheese and red kidney beans). And it was surprisingly good. It's one of those things that you crave about once a year. I had been told about what the people of nasty Nati do to their chili. They put spaghetti in it. That's extremely offensive to me, so I just went with the coneys at Skyline instead. They were ok texas weiner style hotdogs. For some of the horror stories I had heard about Skyline, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised. I am giving this a 4 star due to the staff being very friendly and the food being what it is. I have never had Cincinnati chili and read online that Skyline was the place to go for local taste. If this is what it's supposed to taste like I am not a huge fan. But being that its fast food I can't really expect much. It was interesting and I am glad I tried it. Ever since Liz heard that I was going to Cincinnati, all I heard was "gotta go to Skyline and hava Three Way!". So when I get to the hotel on the river in Covington, KY, there's a Skyline across the street. All the locals said that I had to try it. So, we went. Ervin kept talking about the coneys but I had to try the chili to allow Liz to move on to other things.... So I ordered the five way with habanero cheese. I like hot stuff but this was new so I was a bit concerned about how hot it might be. But it turns out that the hottest ingredient was in the form a sauce in a squeeze bottle on the table. It tasted like Tabasco to me... Another good thing in the world. So what can I say? All the locals already know about Skyline chili. And if you don't know, it's definitely worth it to try this dish. I was visiting Cincinnati for work and was staying at the Holiday Inn across the street. I was thrilled that there was a Skyline right across the street. When I went in, I was greeted warmly. I asked what I should order, and they immediately knew I was not from those parts. The staff were super nice in explaining their specialities and even chatted me up. I ordered a three way chili and when the waitress brought it to my table, she even put a bib on me. I noticed no one else in the restaurant was wearing one, but I'm glad I did as I saw little chili splatters across the bib when I was done eating. The chili itself was pretty good - portion size was generous. Comparing this to Gold Star, which I tried later in the day, this chili has better flavor but also had a little puddle of water at the bottom of the bowl. Then when I was leaving, I thanked them and they gave me a "goody-bag" to take home. It had some york peppermint patties, skyline crackers and hot sauce. What a nice souvenir. read more
