The best hot dog stand in Greater Cincinnati! I've been in Greater Cincinnati for 28 years - and how did I not know about this place. From outside of Chicago - and I've found the Hot Dogs in Cincinnati to be awful. We ordered the Chicago Dog, the Chili Slaw Dog and the Rueben Dog. If you're from Chicago - the Chicago Dog is a good Cincinnati attempt at a Chicago Dog. Wrong peppers and no poppy seeds on the bun - but if you have a craving for a Chicago Dog it will fit the bill. Chicago Hot Dog lovers treasure in Cincy!! This was one of those businesses that I came across and bookmarked for later. Being born and raised in Chicago, I have high expectations for "Chicago Hot Dogs". Here's the secret - Chicago style hot dogs are not complicated. They have specific ingredients, they need to be quality agreements and everything has to be metered out just right. Mr. Genes has perfected the mastery of The Chicago Hot Dog! As a standard Chicago order, I ordered two Chicago hot dogs, all the way, and fries. The Dogs - The hot dog had the right snap. Pickles were perfect. Onions, relish and celery salt were perfect. Bun was on point. Two sport peppers, as required, were good to go. Two tomato slices were fresh and perfect. The Fries - I'm not certain if these are fresh or frozen and that right there is a great sign! Fat and perfectly cooked, these fries could not have been better. In it's unassuming location, I had no idea where exactly Mr. Gene's was located. When we visited, there was a sign out front signaling that they had just opened up again a few days earlier. This would have me assume that they are closed in the winter. Mr. Genes is a Hot Dog Stand with a drive through. We did see some picnic tables in the back, but we were not certain if they belonged to Mr. Genes. Perhaps they bring them out later in the season. While we were in line, we spoke to a few people who appeared to be regulars here and they obviously have been in the know that Mr. Genes has got the goods which is what we were learning right there on the spot. The staff worked away quick and hard in their small kitchen and they crank out a great product with speed and accuracy. They were all very friendly and we had a chance to thank them before we left. Would I go back? Mr. Genes is well out of my way. However, I plan to gladly make the 30 minute drive out to Mr. Genes many more times in the future. There are a few Chicago foods that I truly miss that are very hard to get anywhere. Chicago Style Hot Dogs fall into this category. Went here as a buddy of mine had added it to their 'places to try' and he's from Chicago so we were hoping the Chicago Dogs would be decent. We were not disappointed as the dogs were delicious. He ordered fries and allowed me to give them a try and they seemed like fresh cut potatoes that had been blanched and fried again so they were perfection. It's a long drive for us but to totally worth it. No inside seating. Drive thru and walk up window for service. They have some picnic table seating behind the store. Mr Gene's is a hidden spot on Beekman near where it meets Elmore. They serve mostly fries, wings, shakes and hot dogs. But the dogs are more than the standard hot dog or coney you typically find in this area. They also serve metts, sausages, BBQ, and many toppings. For example, my friend always orders Chicago style with relish, onion, mustard, hot peppers and tomatoes. The king size is what they call a footlong and since I am basic, I enjoy a coney with onion and no mustard. I also like a plain dog with ketchup and onion on occasion. The staff here don't care what weird topping you do or don't order, but when it is busy at lunchtime, you may get razzed by the local factory workers who frequent this spot. Be patient during the lunch rush btw! A coney will run you about $5 but it will be fresh and you will put every cent of that money back into the local economy. Today, I randomly woke up and wanted a hot dog. Not a Cheese Coney or something normal to crave. Just a hot dog. I'm questionable, I know this. So I awkwardly searched for "Hot Dogs" on Yelp! and Mr. Genes Dog House came up. Looked kosher enough for me. So we decided around lunch time to head over to "Cumminsville" which I've never even heard of before. Turns out it's not the nicest area. It's basically in the industrial area off of Hopple And Spring Grove. This place is basically a little walk up hot dog stand. We parked and walked up to the window. Looked over the menu and ordered at the window. We ordered two Chilli Cheese Dogs, A Chicago Dog, Two Orders Of Onion Rings With The Sauce and a Root Beer for $16. SO much food for that amount was amazing. I expected these hot dogs to be small but they were not. They were overly filling and huge. They were so good, though. The Chilli Cheese Dog was super good but I loved the Chicago Dog. It tasted almost exactly like the one I get at my favorite place in Chicago. I'm not big into Onion Rings but these were perfection. I inhaled these Onion Rings. They are perfectly crispy and not too fat and didn't even fall apart. What made them even better was their Onion Ring sauce. I don't know what it was exactly, but I loved it. So if you come here make sure you get the Onion Rings and the sauce that comes with it. I would look on Yelp, or one the windows when you place your order for other menu items or food they have that aren't on the actual menu. They seem to have a lot more than what is offered on their menu. Besides hot dogs, they also have wings, fish, milkshakes and shaved ice. I think there is picnic table style seating behind the building but I wasn't positive if it was for their restaurant or not so we sat in the car and ate our food. It was really messy. I have shredded cheese all over my car now. Haha. So I wouldn't suggest eating it in your car. Go for the picnic tables or take it home. You walk up to the window and order, there is no dining room, though there are some picnic tables out back, or just eat in your car. There is also a drive through. The dogs are good, and the buns they use are great, good crispy fries too. Their standard seems to be a coney, though their chili is not really "Cincinnati style" chili, but more of a typical chili dog variety. The Chicago dog was tasty and messy, just as it should be. OK, keep in mind that this is a standalone hotdog place with no indoor seating. So when I give it five stars I only give it five stars because they are EXCELLENT at what they do. I had a fantastic sausage there, with seating at a picnic table out in the back under a shady tree, in a really bad neighborhood. It was DELICIOUS. If you ever get a chance to drop by, park your car, lock it securely, walk up to the window, order a hot dog with everything, sit in the back at a picnic table, and just drink in the goodness. Located in Cumminsville this is a little out of my normal stomping ground. Regardless, I have now been twice an can say that I am digging it. The basic hot dog leaves a little to be desired but the onion Rings and spicy metwurst are top notch. In fact, the $2 for onion rings & sauce may have been the best food dollars I have spent in a long time. Needless to say, my diet won't let me splurge that often but oh were they good. The spicy metwurst with mustard and relish had the right amount of kick and spice to bring me back for seconds. The stand has both a drive through and walk up window for efficient ordering. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this area of town is a little tough. Sometimes you just want a good hot dog and Mr. Genes has them! Having lived on the East Coast for several years, I grew accustomed to eating beef hot dogs (especially from select food carts yum!) so it was great finding a place that can satisfy my craving and is a alternative to Skyline, Gold Star or any of the other chili places in town. I loved my cheese coney with mustard and onions and the onion rings were equally delicious. Even better was the price. A coney that is substantially bigger than one you would get from Skyline and plenty of delicious other side and dessert options that make you feel like you are getting your moneys worth.
