Mr. Genes - Walk up windo
Jason H.

Chicago Hot Dog lovers treasure in Cincy!! This was one of those businesses that I came across and bookmarked for later. Being born and raised in Chicago, I have high expectations for "Chicago Hot Dogs". Here's the secret - Chicago style hot dogs are not complicated. They have specific ingredients, they need to be quality agreements and everything has to be metered out just right. Mr. Genes has perfected the mastery of The Chicago Hot Dog! As a standard Chicago order, I ordered two Chicago hot dogs, all the way, and fries. The Dogs - The hot dog had the right snap. Pickles were perfect. Onions, relish and celery salt were perfect. Bun was on point. Two sport peppers, as required, were good to go. Two tomato slices were fresh and perfect. The Fries - I'm not certain if these are fresh or frozen and that right there is a great sign! Fat and perfectly cooked, these fries could not have been better. In it's unassuming location, I had no idea where exactly Mr. Gene's was located. When we visited, there was a sign out front signaling that they had just opened up again a few days earlier. This would have me assume that they are closed in the winter. Mr. Genes is a Hot Dog Stand with a drive through. We did see some picnic tables in the back, but we were not certain if they belonged to Mr. Genes. Perhaps they bring them out later in the season. While we were in line, we spoke to a few people who appeared to be regulars here and they obviously have been in the know that Mr. Genes has got the goods which is what we were learning right there on the spot. The staff worked away quick and hard in their small kitchen and they crank out a great product with speed and accuracy. They were all very friendly and we had a chance to thank them before we left. Would I go back? Mr. Genes is well out of my way. However, I plan to gladly make the 30 minute drive out to Mr. Genes many more times in the future. There are a few Chicago foods that I truly miss that are very hard to get anywhere. Chicago Style Hot Dogs fall into this category. I look forward to heading back down to Mr. Genes every time I need my Hot Dog fix!

Went here as a buddy of mine had added it to their 'places to try' and he's from Chicago so we were hoping the Chicago Dogs would be decent. We were not disappointed as the dogs were delicious. He ordered fries and allowed me to give them a try and they seemed like fresh cut potatoes that had been blanched and fried again so they were perfection. It's a long drive for us but to totally worth it. No inside seating. Drive thru and walk up window for service. They have some picnic table seating behind the store. For sure a small mom and pop store so the next time you're in the mood for a Chicago dog and incredible fries and support these nice folks.

As a Chicago native this is the best example of a Chicago hot dog in Cincinnati. Others have tried and failed.

Mr Gene's is a hidden spot on Beekman near where it meets Elmore. They serve mostly fries, wings, shakes and hot dogs. But the dogs are more than the standard hot dog or coney you typically find in this area. They also serve metts, sausages, BBQ, and many toppings. For example, my friend always orders Chicago style with relish, onion, mustard, hot peppers and tomatoes. The king size is what they call a footlong and since I am basic, I enjoy a coney with onion and no mustard. I also like a plain dog with ketchup and onion on occasion. The staff here don't care what weird topping you do or don't order, but when it is busy at lunchtime, you may get razzed by the local factory workers who frequent this spot. Be patient during the lunch rush btw! A coney will run you about $5 but it will be fresh and you will put every cent of that money back into the local economy. Take the food to go, eat it in your car, or pop by Spring Grove cemetery for a lunch and walk!

I got the slaw dog, chili cheese fries, and a strawberry shake. All of it was fire. 0 complaints.

Hot mett coney

Good cheap eats. I always get the hot mett cheese coney and fries. So the thing with cheap is.... it's not that cheap. I mean the hot mett coney is $4 for one. I ordered 4 of them for me and my son. I love the malts here tho. Those are about $8 for a large which isn't that large. But it's a walk up/drive up stand. This isn't a go in and sit kind of place. So I ate my dogs with some grippos and was stuffed. But I mean $25 for 4 dogs and two malts. I guess is ok. I can go get two chipotle bowls for less than 15 so idk how y'all feel about money but... I'd still definitely go again. For sure. When I'm feeling rich.

Buy one get one free! Except, you're conveniently out of cole slaw. We call that the "bait and switch." How about changing the sign??

Perfect to sit at a picnic table in back with a cold drink, tasty Chicago dog, and delicious fries, feeling a cool breeze in the shade.

Ask the Community - Mr. Genes Dog House

Does Gene's make an authentic West Virginia style hot dog? That's dog, chili, mustard, and onion, the northern West Virginia dog, not those slaw boats they eat down in Beckley.

They will make whatever combination you would like!

It's always nice to have friendly staff and reasonable prices... like all the gold stars are aligning. As far as the meal itself was concerned: their chili is different enough from its competitors to be unique but similar enough that to me, it makes it a tossup on where it falls on my Cincinnati chili rank list. Just like Skyline and GS -- it's pretty doggone good. I had my three-way in the park nearby (wow, let's not take that sentence out of context!). Considering there's no real inside seating area, but tons of parks nearby. It's great for a grab and go and late night eating.

Right off the bat, the staff was incredibly welcoming. The menu is straight forward and had a break down of what they offer. I had to try the coneys, but their double decker sandwiches also sound amazing (maybe for another day.) I decided on 3 coneys and an order of chili cheese tater tots and they absolutely did not disappoint. They offer a little bit of everything including a kids menu, and a tasty assortment of desserts as well. It's a perfect spot if you're looking for a quick meal while shopping downtown OR the most ideal food for a drunken night after car hopping in OTR.

We've been to the Blue Ash Senate a couple times and love it; this location does feel entirely different and I wouldn't compare the two at all. While we were looking at the menu, the guy behind the counter told us that their burgers were $5, Wed-Fri before 7PM. We decided to grab two burgers and two hot dogs, the Trailer Park and the FC Dawg. We sat at the bar, just getting a couple waters, and our food came out about fifteen or twenty minutes later. We started with our burgers, not expecting much from them. But they were actually really tasty. Even for a thin patty, they were well-cooked and a bit juicy. Thin onion slices and thick tomato--exactly my preference. And the burger sauce was tangy and a bit spicy. A really great burger for just $5. Then we split the hot dogs in half. the Trailer Park was topped with Coleslaw and Grippo's. The slaw was decent and the chips weren't out of place, but as a whole the dog was a bit underseasoned. The FC Dawg is their version of a Kony, with chili, cheese, and fritos. The toppings weren't bad, but similar to the first dog, it was a bit bland. We'd both skipped lunch and for $5, we couldn't resist grabbing a couple more burgers. The dogs were 3 stars, but the burgers for the price were 5 stars, and we'll definitely be back for them.
