I will say compared to the other places we checked out, Skylight was very well maintained and modern looking with nicely painted walls and contemporary mirrors. The bathrooms were super clean and this location had a small kitchen with a window, which was perfect for our bartender to serve drinks. The price was also affordable and they provide clean up for you. The reason why I didnt give 5 stars is bc of the owners mother in law (the decorator). She was seen at my event on multiple occasions lingering around and I was informed she asked for food. Really?!... Honestly, I would have preferred to not have her in the background of my pictures and clearly in my videos as well. It was tasteless and I would have respected a check in here and there not hawking around like we were throwing a children's party. Oh and the icing on the cake... she threw out our custom engraved champagne glasses bc she was in a rush to clean up. Overall my party was a success and my MOH and mother decorated the hall beautifully within the 2 hour (prior to party time) slot they were given. There was enough room for a photobooth, DJ, cake table, main table, tables for 60 guests and there was still space left for a few people to buss the Electric Slide.

The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff was incredibly attentive. The owners, Rebecca and Yvan, and their team were so helpful and accommodating from start to finish. It can be hard to choose the perfect wedding venue and at first, we weren't sure what to expect. But after our tour, we knew this was the place for us. The outdoor patio area was intimate, warm, and beautiful! We rented space heaters in case, but we didn't end up needing a tent - though My Kitchen can rent a tent if needed. We had the reception outside, with string lights hanging above. It created such a magical atmosphere as the sun set, and the lights added the perfect touch. We had about 40 guests and there was definitely enough space for all of us. Even though parking was limited, guests were able to easily find street parking in the surrounding residential area even on a Saturday night. The room we were in wasn't huge by any means but it got the job done with just enough space for dancing towards the end of the evening. I'm glad I filled up during cocktail hour (the mini beef patties and paella were outstanding!) because my entree (as was many others) was not very good. I ordered the filet mignon and was surprised when they asked how I wanted it cooked. Filet mignon is to only be cooked one way. Regardless I said rare since nowhere in public makes steak actually rare. Instead I received a piece of meat completely overcooked, no flavor, and impossible to cut. I looked around our table of 10 and more than half of us experienced the same issue. Again, I was pretty fully from the fabulous cocktail hour so I let it slide (and am still giving this place 4 stars) but they really need to learn how to cook a steak. Valet parking is available but they will make you take an elevator down to the garage if it fills up too quick. Coat check was unavailable but it was September so I kind of understand that. Typically, functions are run internally and externally by an Ad Hoc committee comprised by whom ever is renting the hall, or, in this case, the American Legions staff. Ten dollars gets you in the door which guarantees each patron all the soda, beer, coffee and tea y'all can drink. Plus hotdogs, baked beans, potato & macaroni salads to eat. November 19th's event was the annual Turkey Shoot which was mainly composed of raffles with tremendous prizes donated my many local merchants. One dollar buys you a ticket, and the rounds continue until all prizes are won, totalling close to twenty rounds. All proceeds are donated to the veterans, which is one of the finest causes for our disposable income to go.

I wish that the venue would have been more accurate with specifying the time that the performers would start. On email correspondences, it was stated that the concert would begin at 6 PM and end at 10 PM. The venue did not start letting people in until 7 PM, and the concert did not begin until 8 PM. This information would have saved me a big rush getting there and given me peace of mind, considering I was traveling from afar. The concert room was a little humid/muggy for a good portion of the performance, and it was not until halfway through the show that the air-conditioning was turned on. Drinks were quite pricey, approximately $60 before tip for two vodka Red Bulls and one gin and tonic. However, this is to be expected of a New York venue. The drinks were tasty! Aside from the VIP section upstairs, there are absolutely no seats here, not even by the bar. Although this is a nightclub style venue, I believe there should be at least a handful of seats in the event someone is not feeling well or can't stand that long. I brought my parents to the charity concert and had to find makeshift seats for them on stools that I found in the basement. There is street parking all around and we found a spot on the street right around the corner from the ballroom. The performance itself was spectacular and high energy! I loved the decor via digital designs on the screen behind the performer, as well on the screens above the bars on each side of the room.

The event space was recommended to my cousin via an event planner that knew/worked with the owner during the initial phase of scouting venues. Upon reaching out to her to schedule the tour of the venue, the message we got back from her via the event planner was something the along the lines of "please be on time because she has things to do" now I'm not saying this was the exact words BUT it was along those lines. Now, we went to see the space the next day. Not only did she now show up or communicate that she wasn't showing up, she sends someone who if not mistaken, is her dad and he was late :). He was very nice I must say. Probably the only pleasant encounter I had the entire process (and the reason I actually booked). Being that he couldn't answer any in depth business questions, we followed up with the owner with questions. It was pretty cut and dry, but in my mind I'm thinking this is a Black woman business owner and I rather give my people my money. She asked what time would we need the space because events after midnight requires security. I told her I'm looking to have my event 8-midnight or 8-1am, would that mean that I have to get security for 1 hour? She tells me, oh you would need it from 8pm-1am for an additional $130. Yea ok miss ma'am because that's NOT what you just said lol. Keep in mind, this event space is NOT cheap. It's $2500 PLUS a $300 refundable deposit if the venue is turned over clean and on time. I had my cousin speak to her from day 1 because I knew deep down in my soul I was going to curse her out for being rude, condescending and unaccommodating. Fast forward from October to January. The venue was booked from 6pm-2am as she only allows an 8 hr slot. That gives me 2 hrs to decorate the space. I asked my cousin to ask if there's anyway we can get in the space any earlier she says $150. My cousin went back to her to plead, asked if she had another event before mine and she said she didn't. She is just HARD for no reason. She eventually compromised to allow 30 minutes earlier. The ONLY accommodations she provided me, was allowing me to pay the balance on the day of event. It is now Jan 28, my team is at event space ready to set up at 5:15pm (remember she said we can have the space at 5:30pm instead of 6pm). At 5:45pm I arrived and everyone is still outside. My cousin calls her and her response is "technically, y'all paid for 6pm so someone is on the way to open the venue" Can you believe that? Lol. Someone finally shows up to open the venue and we walk into an unclean venue. There was a bucket of dirty water and a mop that smells like death in the doorway. There was flowers that was probably from a repass service or something, amongst other things. So not only did she not stick to her word to get us in 30 minutes earlier which I needed to decorate for my OWN event, but she opens the venue at 6 and we have to clean up before we start decorating. We had to call to get help with turning on the air and to adjust the lighting. Like noone was present to help or instruct us on anything. Fast forward to after the event. I had the space until 2am. We started wrapping up around 12:30 because my dj was booked until 1am and he had another booking after my event. At around 1:15am, a random maid was walking around my party asking for "Lorraine". At this time I had 6 out of 8 tables, completely cleared with chairs up, the last 2 tables being worked on, lights are on, dj is 90% packed up, 85% of my guests are GONE. As I am speaking to a few guests this maid interrupts the conversation and says "I'm looking for Lorraine?" So I said "do you mean LORI-ANN? Because I'm her." And she's like "oh yea, I just wanted you to know that the owner is on the way and you guys can begin cleaning up" LOL. So I pointed to the event space and asked her, "what does it look like is happening here?" before turning my back to continue the conversation. This is my BIRTHDAY. I am sending my guests off and you interrupt me, call me the WRONG name and speaking to be in a condescending tone? Furthermore, I have the space until 2am! If I decide to start cleaning at 1:59am that's ON ME. She has my deposit (and thank GOD I only gave her $100 vs $300 on the deposit).
