So glad I finally got to ride the Skunk Train! We booked our tickets in advance for the daytime train to Glen Blair junction. The Skunk Train is dog friendly, which I absolutely loved. The inside portion of the train had seating, but many of the windows couldn't be opened. I recommend standing in the outdoor portion of the train (although it was a bit cold), especially towards the end of the ride. The views of the redwoods were so beautiful! The ride itself was pretty short. Once we got to Glen Blair, we had 30 minutes to walk around or just hang out by the propane heaters/fire pits. The pavilion at Glen Blair was incredibly cute, with plenty of seating and string lights. We stayed there and took pictures, since we weren't really dressed for hiking. Then it was just a quick train ride back to the station! Overall, highly recommend this as an activity. read more

This is an adventure worth going on! So much fun and so much beauty to take in. The bikes are electric so you can get a really good work out OR don't use that and just pedal easy and chill with the electric component. We had a great guide who spaced us out so you get the feel of nature alone and at some stops as a group. Look them up on Instagram or Google for cool videos. The two guides, unfortunately didn't were great. I know he was a very new and exciting experience that was very short. Just over 3 miles and they stopped at a large bar sitting area. You can purchase chips and drink drinks and sit around and wait for the guy to let you know that it's time to return. Unfortunately, with our tour being only 7 miles long we had to wait until the skunk train, the actual train itself laughed, which meant we were there for way, way too long. We then waited until our guides were able to clean the entire pavilion of cops and garbage and then come and close up the bathrooms as well as turn off the generator, etc. There's only then that we got on our bikes and returned. I think the experience was different and unique. But I would never do it again. Also, if I knew better, I would've taken the 23-25 mile course. Too expensive for just 7 miles in a bunch of sitting around waiting. read more

This is a great way to spend a few hours when visiting Fort Bragg. It's cool to board this classic train and ride it right out of town into the massive redwood forest. You can't help but feel like you're taking a trip back in time on board the train, and the forest that surrounds you feels mystical and ancient, adding to the experience. The talking points shared via loudspeakers during the ride do a good job of explaining the history of the train and the area as well. I loved that the train stopped in the middle of the forest allowing us all to get off and explore for almost a half hour. We were with young kids so we stayed on the short path, but it sounded like the more difficult trail was a bit more rewarding. There's a bar on board. It's pretty well stocked and prices aren't crazy. I loved that they had canned cocktails and even a locally made apple wine, which was deeelicious! The fours stars is just to echo what everyone is saying. It's a pricey activity for what you get. I'm assuming the costs are due to maintaining such an old train, but it is one of the more expensive things to do in Fort Bragg. Next time we visit I'd be more interested in the rail bike tour they offer. read more

For small children the excursion is probably fine. A train ride with the dramatic train whistle going through the trees would delight any child. However, a 7-mile ride (3.5 mi each way) for $54 is ridiculous. Had I known, my husband and I would've saved the $100+. I should've read the one-star reviews before committing. read more

The train stops for you to rest or take a small trail and explore. As I love trails, obviously I was going to explore the trails. Then one person showed up at the ticket counter and very rudely informed everyone they were sold out of tickets for the day. My fiancé and I rode the rail bikes on Monday and it was such a fun experience! Fun ride through the redwoods, to Glen Blair junction to hangout, hike, and eat, and back to the Skunk Train depot. The package we got came with a lunch for 2 in a skink train lunch bag we got to keep. And later that evening we realized if came with 2 cute skunk pins! Scott and Jordan were great, really informative, and made it fun. Disappointing and Overpriced Experience We were really looking forward to the Skunk Train, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a big letdown. The price was way too high for what it offered a slow 20-25 minute ride with not much to see. The scenery wasn't anything special, and the entire ride felt underwhelming. To make things worse, there was an unusual 45-minute stop in the middle of the journey with nothing to do. It felt like we were just wasting time. It is not a round trip as well. You will have to return through the same boring path. Even the kids were bored, which says a lot! Parents and children alike found the experience dull and unengaging. For the cost, we expected something far more memorable, but this wasn't it. Would not recommend. read more

What an excellent trip. I definitely recommend taking the longer Noyo River excursion as I felt the Pudding Creek trip was a bit too short. The Noyo trip takes several hours and I absolutely felt like I got my moneys worth. The staff was incredibly professional and prepared. One of the rigs on the tour had some battery issues and the staff was able to address it on the trail. They even had an entire spare rig ready to go just in case. read more

We rode the Presidential Car to the Pudding Creek stop. The car was amazing and the large green seats were good and comfortable. The cocktails were well worth it and the snacks were appropriately done. The Pudding creek stop is nice and the walk was very pleasant up the trail. This review is for the Moonlight Rail Bike Ride at the Skunk Train. The moonlight rail bike is a special event only offered on certain days during the month and I don't know if it is every month. Fortunately, we were in Mendocino for the moonlight ride in September, the night after a full moon. The tickets were booked really early as it is popular and does sell out. We arrived early and checked in in the Skunk Train depot and were directed to the rail bike barn. The staff were friendly and had us wait while they moved the rail bikes from the barn to the tracks. Once we were all in attendance we went in to the barn for a safety video and then guided out to the rail bikes, where the staff helped adjust seats and got us ready to go. The sun has set and it is getting dark. The rail bikes are battery assist so you don't have to pedal the entire way or at all it is up to you. We all spaced out and felt as if we were riding the rails alone. The forest and redwoods were dark and it was magical. We rode about 3.5 miles until we came upon the Glen Blair Barn, an open air barn/bar. We stopped our bikes and joined all those that had gone out on the train. We had our s'more kits on the bike and we were given one drink token for a drink from the bar. We grabbed our drinks, found a firepit that we could squeeze into to toast our marshmallows for the s'mores, waited for chairs to open and finally got a seat. There was a musician playing guitar and singing and he was great. We hung out for the evening and enjoyed the music. The rail bikes don't leave the barn/bar until the last train takes the last guest back to the station. We rode out at 7:00 pm and didn't leave the barn/bar until 10:30pm. The ride back was just as magical under a full moon that kept peeking through the forest. Back at the Skunk Train Rail Bike Barn it was about 11:15pm. We said our thank you' s and goodbyes after a fabulous evening. Tips and Info. The barn/bar is crowded, so seating can be hard to find. I wouldn't take kids in the evening, the crowd wasn't super rowdy, but there were definitely quite a few that had taken the train that had overindulged and were so drunk they were falling down out of the bathrooms, in the grass, stumbling over chairs and honestly making fools of themselves. The only bathrooms are port-a-potties and by the end of the night, they are NASTY. Once the last train left and it was just the employees and rail bikers, it was so quiet and peaceful, we would loved to have stayed just all of us. But we had a lot of fun. The moonlight rail bike ride was truly magical and I highly recommend it, just know that you can't go back until after the last train, so be prepared to hang at the bar for the evening. They do have corn hole and giant Jenga games to enjoy as well as live music, and firepits for s'mores. Have Fun!! read more

Fun experience biking on the railway. The route there and back is the same, but has nice scenery and tour guides give some historical information along the way. Once you get to the other end of the railway, you have time to explore some small hiking trails and/or enjoy drinks and lunch on the covered patio and play some of the games. read more

Expensive excursion for an extremely average experience. This was the Glen Blair bar ride where you take a 15-20 min ride to a barn in the redwoods. Once you arrive it is every man for themselves. There are only 3 fire pits outside which each seat 10-12 chairs around. For note between the 2 departure times there were at least 100 people there... on a cold night this makes for a pretty un enjoyable experience for most who are relying on the few heaters that put off little heat in the barn. For a 49 dollar ticket I thought maybe there would be complimentary water or hot chocolate or even a 1 drink voucher per ticket but this is not the case. We got Irish coffees which were 10 dollars a piece and luke warm at best. Not what I was expecting when they mention their world class bar and cocktails in the description. To top it all off, rides back are supposed to come every hour... they announced at 8:30 that only one train was coming that evening at 10:15pm due to a tree falling. Many people were lined up ready to take an earlier train and were stuck for another 1.5 hours. Everyone was understanding that things happen but no further updates were provided or addressed the entire night about us being able to make it back safely. The only redeeming thing about this experience was that I was with my family and we brought our own deck of cards and my husband kept our large fire going at the pit. read more

Quick getaway with the hubs and scheduled a trip on the rail bikes to experience something different. Our trip was on a Friday and we paid $150 vs $250 - maybe there are weekday specials? Arrived and checked in at 10:30 for our 11am trip. There were about 10 couples in all. After adjusting our seats and giving the drivers a quick tutorial on how to operate the bikes, off we went. It was chilly, especially when riding through shade - dressing in layers is a good idea. About 20-30 minute ride to the end point. The leader provided some background/history on the Skunk Train and the area before a 50 minute leisure time. There are two quick hiking trails as well as seats to hang out. We decided to skip the hikes and eat the snack items we brought - handy basket at the front of the rail bikes held our picnic items. The trip back felt quicker than our trip in. Overall, we had a good time. Definitely an experience. Would love to take our kiddos next time. read more

This is a very unique experience in Fort Bragg! This 2-hour experience involves learning how to use the railbikes, pedaling along the tree-lined rail, and a stopover for a short hike before turning back around. Cost is $250 per bike and that can accommodate 2 people. The railbikes are very easy to use - pedal assist and throttle make it so you're barely exercising! More leisurely pedaling, we didn't break a sweat. We also got goodie bags with caramel corn and waters for our journey. It's about 20 mins of pedaling each way, and you pass through town (railroad crossing barriers even come down for you!) and through a forest and over a few stream bridges before getting into more redwood area. It's definitely not dense and old redwoods for much of it, but towards the end you see more! It was a group of 10 or so bikes with a leader in front and back. We kept our distance during the ride so felt very serene. Note that masks are required during the entire ride. We had quite a while at the end to get out and do a short hike with some cool views. The Skunk Train uses the same track so came in and turned around where we had parked. Then, our railbikes were flipped and we went back the same route. While it was not as redwood-heavy as I had pictured, we still had a lot of fun pedaling this unique railbike! Overall, a fun unique things to do in the area. read more

My wife and I took our two visiting nephews on the rail bikes from Fort Bragg last week. We live in Fort Bragg so requested and received the local discount. Thanks, though it still seems crazy expensive. After making us sit through an idiotic orientation film, we went out to the bikes where we did receive thorough instructions about how to use the bikes - until the person described how we cross Highway One. She suggested that we wave to the "locals", then added that there is another gesture we might make to the "locals". Since the recent ramping up of daily trips and the accompanying train whistles at the four roads they must cross, and their stealing of the Mill property, the train has become a complete nuisance in this town. Many, many of us despise them... and that they slyly suggested giving the bird to locals just reinforces that feeling. Oh, back to the bikes. We rented two. Once we got moving both of the bikes we rented experienced a rather disturbing and constant vibration. Our heads were vibrating so much It was actually difficult to see clearly. I could not tell where it was coming from, though it seems like it was some electrical issue with the motor (felt like the brakes were being applied and released rapidly). It was very annoying. We informed the trip leader and were promised and given different cars for the ride back. One of the new bikes we got functioned well, while the other was actually WORSE. As we pulled into the station and saw another bunch of rubes waiting to get on the bikes I felt bad that this attraction is one of the things representing Fort Bragg, and it sucks on multiple levels.
