I went in for a cut and color with the owner and walked out with a cut that was a lot shorter than I expected in the back, wasn't shown the cut or the back - just went right to bleaching, coloring, coloring again because the 1st result wasn't anywhere near what I asked for, then the colored a 2nd time which also came out too light. Left with a darker color but not really where I wanted it, being told to wash in the color depositing shampoo to add more color in and one of my sideburns was only half colored with the darker color appearing shorter than the other side. I went to a different salon to fix the very expensive cut and color I left Skull & Combs with. read more

I didn't have a good experience here at all. It took a while for someone to actually acknowledge me when I walked in for my appointment, and that was the only staff member that I felt like had a welcoming attitude. Unfortunately I didn't catch her name, but the general vibe here is very nonchalant, blase, and apathetic. My haircut with Val was disappointing and also painful. She cut off way more than the length I specified and she pressed the buzzer against my head way too hard. It took more than a month for my hair to start looking okay again, and I was really unhappy with the result. Several friends of mine have had the same experience unfortunately. read more

I have worked in the hair industry for the past 15 years. I used to work at Arrojo Studio in NYC but moved to CT back in 2015. I've only ever let my friends cut my hair because they know exactly how I like it (I'm a little hair crazy). I finally decided to bite the bullet and book an appointment close to home. Traveling to NYC so often, especially during these times, has gotten to be too much. I'm so glad I found Skull & Combs. I was nervous to go to a new place but I booked my appointment with Jemma. I'm so glad I found her! She knew exactly how I wanted my hair did a stellar job. I've already gotten so many compliments and it hasn't even been a full day. I'll definitely be going back to see her! read more

Shout out to Christie for doing a fabulous job on my hair! Everyone here seemed down to earth... None of that pretentious BS that I've experienced at other New Haven salons. PS Ladies..they seem to also have some good looking male clients. I may need to come hang out here just for that! read more

I had such a positive experience with Kayla! Such a sweetheart and so personable! I went for a cut and blowdry, but had a very specific side part haircut I wanted to recreate. The whole time she was educating me on hair health and proper styling techniques. I'm so thankful for her recs and work, she's kept my hair looking full and healthy! read more

Not only is this establishment super swanky in the most welcoming way but they have they talent to back it as well. I've been coming here for the past couple months. First brought here by a friend who found a stylist off of Instagram (shout out to the talented Eva) I was just a mere observer turned believer. Eva did a phenomenal job listening to my own needs when I decided to sit in the chair. As you spend quite a bit of time in the salon you see how the other stylists get along and deliver quality hair styles. I drive 50 minutes to come here every 6 weeks. The only bonus is we get pizza in New Haven afterwards. But we mostly come for the hair cuts, company and service is always phenomenal! Highly recommend! read more

Yes, my name is Karen and yes, I'd like to speak to the manager but it's not what you think. I can't say enough good things about this salon or about Jemma. This was really one of my first ever salon experiences. I went on a few consultations at different salons because I wanted to be COMPLETELY confident in my stylist choice with what I wanted to do. I wanted to go from black to as light as my brittle damaged crazy curly hair would allow me. I was excited but omg so nervous. From the moment I stepped into Skull & Combs on State Street in New Haven, before I even sat in the chair, the energy in there alone told me I'd found the right place. It is SO clean, SO cool, and SO friendly. Then I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and consulting with the queen that is Jemma. She was so adorably funny & sweet, made me feel sooo comfortable, laughed at my jokes (always a way to score points in my book), but most importantly.. I could tell she really frikkin knew her stuff. After a "test" on my hair, I left there with a much better idea than I got any other place of what I could (& couldn't) realistically do with my hair. I booked my big change for two weeks out from that day with Jemma. Well.. my appointment was this past Sunday. OMG.. I can't even adequately express what an experience it was. Not only did the result absolutely blow my mind & I'm now currently utterly obsessed with myself but, my time spent there that day was just awesome. I felt SO comfortable, I felt SO cared about, and I felt SO appreciated. I not only recommend the heck out of this place but.. I can't wait to go back!! It ticks every single box you'd look for in a salon, I swear: clean, professional, friendly, easy to find, i had zero issues parking each time (believe it or not this was one of my biggest concerns with it being in new haven). I legitimately wish I could give this salon a bazillion stars and Jemma a bazillion plus one. PERFECTION!!!!! read more

UPDATE 7/8/2020 I had a haircut with Christie yesterday. I was nervous for a few reasons--it was my first time to a salon since the pandemic started and I was asking for a dramatic change, chopping my hair off into a pixie. The salon is taking every precaution to make things safe. They took my temp when I entered, asked me the usual covid questions. They sprayed my hands with sanitizer, then sprayed the chair where she cut my hair. And right before she washed my hair, they sprayed the chair at the wash station. There was a plastic shower curtain separating the two wash stations. They've changed the lounge furniture from upholstered sofas to vinyl couches, easier to clean and sanitize. Everyone wore masks. There were maybe a total of four stylists and three clients in the place, distanced apart. During the haircut I kept my mask on the entire time and Christie worked around it. She only asked me to take off one ear loop and hold the mask to my face while she trimmed around my ear, then the other side. As for the haircut, it was fantastic. I have really thin, straight, unmanageable hair due to some medical issues, and I had to get it cut. Christie thoughtfully considered my hair, we talked about what I wanted (something super short and no fuss to style). She took her time with the cut and gave me a great style. It was a huge change for me, the first time I've had short hair since I was a toddler. But I love the 'do and have no regrets. Many thanks to the salon for making me feel as safe as can be and huge thanks to Christie for tackling my difficult hair and turning it into something I love. Previous review: Eva was so great with my daughters. I FINALLY found someone to give my five-year-old a true pixie cut. Until now, every stylist has talked me out of a pixie cut. They seems to think I don't really want super short hair for my little girl. But Eva finally gave me exactly what I asked for and she did a perfect job. She also cut my ten-year-old daughter's hair and gave her a stylish shoulder length cut. She's so happy with her hair. The price makes mama happ too. We live a 1/2 hour away but it's worth the drive, we'll definitely be returning. read more

I've had been wanting to dye my hair for a while but was hesitant until I found a salon I could trust with my hair. Ari took me from brunette to red in one sitting and was amazing! She answered all the questions I had and walked me through the entire process to make sure I knew what was going on. It was my first time getting my hair professionally dyed and I could not have asked for a better experience or stylist. Thank you Ari! read more

Highly recommend this salon!! Ari is such a talented colorist. I've recommended to my sister and she loves it too. If you're looking for a laid back salon vibe with music mixes from the 80s to today, this is your place to go. All of the stylists are super talented. Bonus Perk - they bring their dogs!! read more

Valentina cut my hair today and I couldn't be more pleased. She left my hair looking so much healthier and gave me so many tips on how to maintain it. I've avoided getting my hair done during COVID, but she and the salon made sure to take multiple precautions to ensure safety. Thanks so much! read more

I LOVE this place! It is super homey and cute! Ari was my stylist and i spoke with her extensively before my appointment to let her know what i wanted. She made me feel really confident about the process all the way through and had no problem with the millions of questions i asked. I look forward to our next appointment together! read more

They're serious about being safe in times of COVID (temperature check, hand sanitizer everywhere, masks on everyone the whole time, lots of fans moving air around), and I got a great haircut from Jemma. Great shop with great people giving great haircuts, well worth the price. read more

I went here for the first time and Jemma was a magician! I've never been happier with my hair. She took her time and was friendly and professional. Temperatures are taken and hands sanitized at the front door and common areas sanitized after use, so it helped put me at ease that they're following zCOVID regulations. I'm never doing box dye again and I'll definitely be back! read more

See all

I went for the first time recently, and I was blown away! I gave my stylist (Veronica) a heads-up that I had a LOT of hair. She quickly adjusted my appointment in order to accommodate my excessive amount of hair. I went for a total "transformative" hair-coloring session - and the results WAY exceeded my expectations! Veronica took her time to make sure my whole new look came out *just* right. I'm thrilled! The shop itself stays quite busy, and all the stylists are focused on keeping their clients happy and moving along. Looking forward to going back soon to play with some more colors! read more

Same as other reviewers, I walked by Skull & Combs a few times and commented that more women's hair salons should have such a cool interior. When searching for a new hair salon, I found out they also do women's hair. I booked an appointment online (very handy) for that night with Veronica. My haircut looks amazing, Veronica was so nice to talk to and gave me a KILLER blowout, and the entire staff was extremely kind. I ended up hanging around after my haircut talking to the owner about the history of the building and getting tips on the area (since I just moved here). As someone who is pretty picky with their hair, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Phoebe gave me the best layered cut/balayage/style I've had in New Haven (and I've been here for six years). My hair is super thin, so that took some magic. She asked the right questions, really listened to what I wanted, and gave the perfect amount of advice to be helpful and not overwhelming. She's great with reds, too--I've shown the same target picture to other stylists a few times and no one else has managed to match it. I really wish I'd found this place sooner! read more

Sam did a fantastic job! It was the first time I've ever colored my hair and she took me from black to a rose-toned chocolate brown. She first lightened it using an extra additive to keep it healthy and then used a toner to get rid of the orangey undertone. I'm planning to go back so I can gradually transition to blonde. I totally trust her to get me there without damaging my hair or having to look like a backstreet boy in between lightenings. This girl knows what she's doing! And from what I saw of the other clients who came and went during my four hour session, the others there are also pretty expert. Ladies: Don't be fooled by the playful, laid back, tattoo parlor type vibe of the place. It's not just for rainbow-colored Mohawks and lumberjack beard trimmings. When it comes to sophisticated and natural looking hair color and blowouts, these pros are all business! They're just not snobby about it. ;) read more

I've been going to Skull & Combs for a few months now as it was recommended to me by a friend in the industry. I am so glad I took that advice because Veronica makes my hair look amazing. She listened to what I was thinking about changing with my red and recommended I try balayage, which came out absolutely gorgeous. I am slowly edging towards a brighter red color and I always got TONS of compliments after I visit the salon. The decor is awesome and the music they have on is always great, too. Go to Skull & Combs! You won't be disappointed. read more

Eva is amazing!!!!!!! I found her on Instagram and fell in love with her work! I've been to her three times and each time I've never been disappointed. Her level of understanding of what I was communicating about color, tone and cut made me feel super comfortable putting my hair in her hands. I can see from the busy-ness of this salon that she is not the only one that is talented here. I can't wait for my next cut and color. I've brought my friend here and she fell in love with it! Thanks for listening to my needs and bringing me to the next level! Highly recommend this salon!!! read more

THE BEST!! I have been coming in for haircuts and coloring for a while now. Every visit is better than the last! I highly recommend Skull & Combs! It is easy and convenient to book an appointment whether it's online or through the phone. This place is amazing! I normally don't review but I had to, they did such a wonderful job! I hadn't had a haircut in 2 years so it was very long and I was pretty nervous since I wanted it pretty short. I told Christie how short I was thinking and was open to suggestions. She talked me through what I was expecting and gave me some tips. I have never been this in love with a haircut before, plus the ambiance was so chill, will definitely be coming back! read more

Christie really gave me a beautiful pixie cut. She talked me through the whole process, I have very fine hair and was nervous but she made me feel at ease and I could not be more happy with the result. Thank you! read more

I had a great haircut. Would definitely go back. Love the people and the vibe of this beautiful place

So great! Love the vibe of the salon. Jemma worked her magic as always, always a great cut and really listens in on what i want! So worth it to come here, good people, great service, and a very positive environment! Will be back again! read more

Gio was super fast, super nice, and did a really sharp job on my undercut and my partner's beard. We'll be back.

This shop is like a supercuts trying to be cool. You pay for the atmosphere and blasting music, not the quality of the cut. For the past week, I have been finding uneven bits of hair or places they missed (behind the ears, back of the neck). This place is garbage, stay away if you value your hair and not looking like a slob. read more

Jason was meticulous. I got everything I came for and then some. My goal was platinum, which often requires a ton of work on my dark hair. He was fastidious with the bleaching process and generous with the toner. The haircut itself was exquisitely crafted. I not only love the outcome, but I had fun in the process. Cannot recommend highly enough. read more

Staff was friendly and chipper. Greeted me and brought me water. During the consult i'd asked for 3/4 inch off my 3-4 inches of hair on top and a trim on the sides. Gave several reference photos and specifically called out that I wanted to keep the shape I had now. Haircut with Ari went well until she asked if I wanted more I wanted more off in the front to match the back. I checked them length with my hands. She'd taken the middle of my head down to 1/2 an inch and completely reshaped my hair style. It was asymmetrical and framed my face poorly. The owner shaped up the front to even it out and offered to comp the haircut which I declined. It's a job and stylist deserve the feedback without a financial hit. Will not be returning to Skull and Combs. Edit: The owner made an immediate effort to reach out and correct the issue. It's clear the company is not a bad business, but it's difficult to remedy a situation like the one I've been put in. read more

Just got a barber cut from Kayla. Fantastic job. Would recommend anyone to go see her.

Great salon. Great people, great conversation. All I can say is they definitely know what there doing. One of the only salons you can take your whole family to and get your hair done. My man, my son, my daughter and I all get our hair done here. You normally have to go to different salons to get your entire family's hair cuts but not here. We all go. It's just a great place. So if you need a place to get your hair done and want just a regular old not good hair cut dont go here. But if you want a hair cut or hairstyle that people will compliment you on, skull and combs is the place to go. Go check them out for yourself. You won't be disappointed. I know I never had any problems or complaints with my hair or my family's. read more

Had my hair cut by Jason today and it was a lovely experience and I'm super pleased with my hair!!!!! He has great ideas and is willing to listen to what you want. He also took his time cutting my hair and at no point did I feel rushed. The salon is nicely done and the online booking system is a huge bonus. You do have to street park but I had no issues finding parking. Will definitely be back! read more

Christie G. is the queen of color. I have been going to Christie for almost 15 years and would trust my color to NO ONE else. I drive an 1 1/2 to see Christie at Skull & Combs, New Haven. Easily the best place to get your hair cut near downtown. I've bounced around to several barbers/stylists (e.g. Phil's, Capture) before Skull and Combs and I feel as if others just give you a standard haircut at not-insignificant prices. The very first haircut I got here was, without doubt, one of the best I had. I'm bad with names but I believe Tyler cut my hair that time. It was very thoughtfully done. I sat down and he took time to assess my hair, wash it before the cut to see how it naturally is, and ask for clarification about exactly what I wanted to make sure he and I were on the same page. I returned a month after this haircut and the following one with a different stylist was just as pleasant and thoughtful. Will happily come back for future cuts. read more

Went in to see Jason at their new location in Norwalk. I went in for a balayage to fix a disaster that another hairstylist left me with. Jason spent hours doing my hair, and it came out exactly how I wanted. Kelsey, Christine and Clover were also really helpful and amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about everyone there. It's obvious they take pride in what they do. read more
